Movavi Video Editor for Mac: An Easy Timeline Editor with Templates, Auto Subtitles and Effects
Movavi Video Editor for Mac is a beginner-friendly video editor for macOS 12 and later that cuts, trims and joins clips, adds titles, transitions and effects, and builds videos from ready-made templates, with AI tools for subtitles, silence removal and auto-cropping. It costs $54.95 a year or $119.95 for a lifetime license on one Mac, and the free version lets you try everything with a "Trial" watermark on exports.
It's for the Mac owner who finds iMovie too limited and Final Cut Pro too much: family videos, YouTube vlogs, social clips and quick business promos, made without learning a professional editor.

Before you buy
Movavi sells Video Editor for Mac as a yearly subscription or a lifetime license, and many of its Trustpilot complaints are about subscriptions that renewed or couldn't be cancelled. If you'll edit for more than a couple of years, the lifetime license works out cheaper, and if you take the yearly plan, check the renewal setting in your Movavi account. Make sure you buy the Mac edition: Movavi's Mac and Windows editors are separate products, and the buy links can lead to Movavi's bigger Video Suite for Mac.

Overview
Movavi Video Editor for Mac opens on an import area with a big Add Files button and shortcuts to record video from your camera, capture the screen, record audio or start the Slideshow Wizard. Below it sits the timeline, with separate tracks for titles, video and audio. A sidebar on the left holds the effects collections (filters, transitions, titles, stickers and more), and you drag what you want onto the timeline. Hover over any effect and the player previews it before you commit.
The import screen, from Movavi's Mac user guide: drop files on the Add Files area or straight onto the timeline. Tabs along the top lead to project files, sample videos, backgrounds and intro videos.
Features
Templates and Blocks for fast videos
Movavi Video Editor for Mac version 27 (September 2026) added Movavi Templates: complete videos with editing, music, transitions and text built in, for vlogs, family videos, business promos and lessons. Each template is made of Blocks, short pre-edited segments such as intros, countdowns, quick cuts and animated collages. You can use a template as it is, swap in your own clips and text, rearrange the Blocks, or build a video Block by Block.
A timeline with the everyday editing tools
Movavi Video Editor for Mac's timeline handles the basics quickly: a blade tool for precise cuts, trimming, cropping, rotation, speed changes and slow motion, color correction with filters and LUTs, stabilization, motion tracking, chroma key (green screen) and picture in picture. Effects, color tweaks and audio settings can be copied from one clip to another in a couple of clicks.
Adding a filter, from Movavi's Mac user guide: filter categories on the left, thumbnails in the middle, and a filter dragged onto a clip on the timeline below.
AI subtitles, silence removal and auto-cropping
Movavi Video Editor for Mac turns speech into automatic subtitles in one click, in almost any language, and you pick the font, color and position. Silence removal cuts out pauses automatically, or lets you set the pause length and volume threshold. Auto-tracked cropping follows the speaker or product while you turn a horizontal clip into a vertical one for Reels, Shorts or TikTok. There's also noise removal and audio editing, with free music and sound effects built in.
Thousands of effects
Movavi Video Editor for Mac comes with more than 10,000 effects across titles, transitions, filters, overlays, stickers and intros, including animated overlays such as fire and lightning. More packs are sold in Movavi's Effects Store.
Benefits
- Fast results for beginners. Templates and Blocks give you a finished-looking video before you've learned the timeline.
- Less tedious work. Automatic subtitles and silence removal take care of the jobs that eat most of a vlogger's editing time.
- Native on new Macs. It runs natively on Apple silicon instead of through Rosetta.
- One-time option. The lifetime license avoids a monthly bill, unlike many newer editors.
Real-World Uses
- A holiday video: pick a family template, drop in phone clips and photos, and export a finished movie with music.
- A YouTube vlog: remove the silences from a talking-head recording, add automatic subtitles and an intro Block.
- Social clips: auto-crop a landscape interview to 9:16 for Reels or Shorts, keeping the speaker centered.
- A product promo: use chroma key to put a product shot on a new background and add animated titles.
Who It's For, and Who Should Skip It
Movavi Video Editor for Mac suits home users, beginners and small creators who want more than iMovie (templates, AI subtitles, many effects) without the learning curve of a professional editor.
Skip it if you edit professionally or need advanced color grading, multicam and complex audio mixing: Final Cut Pro or DaVinci Resolve fit that work. Skip it too if iMovie already does what you need, since it's free on every Mac, or if you dislike subscriptions and won't pay $119.95 for the lifetime license. If you also want screen recording and a video converter, Movavi's Video Suite for Mac bundles them.
Usage Guide
- Install and launch. Download the installer, open it and let it download and install Movavi Video Editor, then open the app from Applications.
- Add your files. Click Add Files or drag clips, photos and music onto the import area or the timeline. Or pick a template to start from.
- Cut and arrange. Use the blade tool to split clips, delete what you don't need and drag clips into order.
- Add effects. Open the filters, transitions or titles collection on the left, hover to preview, and drag your choice onto the timeline.
- Add subtitles and clean up audio. Use automatic subtitles and silence removal if your video has speech.
- Export. Click Export and choose a format, a device or a site to upload to.
- Activate. After buying, choose Activate software in the main menu, or sign in through the My Account menu, to remove the watermark.
Where it falls short
- The free version isn't for final videos. Every exported video carries a "Trial" watermark, and depending on the build there may be a 60-second limit or advanced export features held back.
- Subscription friction. Several Trustpilot reviewers complain about renewals they couldn't cancel or refunds refused.
- Effects change between versions. One long-time user says many older effects were removed in newer versions.
- Not a pro editor. It's built for speed and ease, not for detailed color grading or large multi-track projects.

The pattern
People who use Movavi's editor mostly find it easy, including older and first-time editors, and support gets credit for fast fixes. The complaints are almost all about money and licensing: subscriptions, renewals, activation problems and refunds, plus some long-time users missing effects that were dropped. Try the free version first, and choose the license type deliberately.
Comparisons
Movavi Video Editor for Mac vs. iMovie
iMovie is free and good for simple edits. Movavi Video Editor for Mac adds templates and Blocks, automatic subtitles, silence removal, auto-cropping for vertical video, chroma key, motion tracking and a much larger effects library. If you make social or YouTube videos often, those tools save time. For an occasional family clip, iMovie is enough.
Video Editor vs. Video Suite for Mac
Movavi Video Suite for Mac includes the editor plus media file conversion and screen recording. Movavi's Mac price page lists the suite's lifetime license at $189.95, against $119.95 for the editor alone. Buy the suite only if you need the converter and recorder too.

FAQs
Does Movavi Video Editor for Mac run natively on Apple silicon?
Yes. Movavi Video Editor for Mac has native support for ARM-based Macs (M1 and later) and also runs on 64-bit Intel Macs, with macOS 12 or later.
Does the free version of Movavi Video Editor add a watermark?
Yes. Movavi Video Editor's free version adds a "Trial" watermark to exported videos, and saving a project as audio keeps only half its length. Activating a license removes both.
Can I use my Mac license on Windows?
No. Movavi Video Editor for Mac and Movavi Video Editor for Windows are separate products with separate licenses, so buy the edition for the computer you'll edit on.
Is the lifetime license really one payment?
Yes. Movavi Video Editor for Mac's lifetime license is a one-time payment of $119.95 for one computer, while the $54.95 plan is a yearly fee you renew if you're satisfied.
Can I get a refund?
Movavi refunds the full price within 14 days if you have technical or other problems that can't be solved, subject to its refund policy. Changing your mind isn't covered, so use the free version first.
How do I activate Movavi Video Editor on a Mac?

Conclusion
Movavi Video Editor for Mac is worth it if you want better-looking videos than iMovie makes, quickly, without learning a professional editor. The one reason to buy it is speed: templates, Blocks, automatic subtitles and silence removal turn hours of fiddly work into minutes. The main reason to hesitate is the business model, since the cheaper plan is a yearly subscription and that's where most complaints come from. Try the free version, and if it suits you, the $119.95 lifetime license is the better deal for anyone editing for more than two years.
