Stellar Repair for Photo for Windows: Fix JPEGs That Won't Open
Stellar Repair for Photo for Windows is a $39.99 one-year program that repairs corrupt JPEG and HEIC photos and pulls embedded images out of damaged RAW files. It's for anyone with pictures that open grey, half-missing or not at all, and the free version shows you the repaired results before you pay.
A card fails, a transfer stops halfway, or a recovery tool hands back files that won't open. The picture data is often still mostly there, and what's broken is the structure around it. Stellar Repair for Photo rebuilds what it can, and when a photo is past fixing, it looks for a smaller copy hidden inside the file. One thing to know from the start: everything comes out as a JPG, so this is a JPEG repair tool first and a RAW rescue tool a distant second.

- What we checked: the installer on Stellar's server (33.0 MB, file version 8.8.0.1, dated May 28, 2026), the output format and trial limits in Stellar's version 8 manual, the results shown in that manual's screenshots, and the $39.99 price and 12-month renewal on the order page on November 6, 2026. We didn't repair any photos ourselves, so the results below come from the reviewers and users quoted.
Before you buy: RAW files come back as JPEGs
Stellar lists a long run of RAW formats, which reads as if your CR3 or NEF will be restored as a RAW file. It won't. Stellar's manual answers "Does the software repairs the image file in the same format?" with "No, the software repairs the image file in JPG format." Stellar's own screenshots show CR3 files producing an "Extracted" JPG of 1080 x 1620 pixels, far below the camera's real resolution. If you need the full RAW data for editing, this isn't the tool. Run the free version first, since Stellar's refund policy refuses buyers who skipped the evaluation version.

Overview
The program is very simple: add photos, click Repair, look at the results, save. It takes a whole batch of mixed formats in one go. Each photo then appears in a list with a label saying what the software managed: Repaired, Extracted or Thumbnail, along with its resolution. That list is the most honest thing in the product, because it tells you at a glance whether you've got your picture back or only a small copy of it.
It reads from any drive Windows can see, including hard drives, SSDs, USB sticks and memory cards. The original file isn't changed.

Mixed formats in one batch: CR3, JPG, ARW and HEIC files waiting for repair.
Features
Batch repair of mixed formats
Stellar Repair for Photo repairs as many photos as you add in one run, in any mix of its supported formats. That matters after a card failure, when the damage is spread across hundreds of files.

A batch in progress. The list already shows which files came back Repaired and which gave only Extracted or Thumbnail images.
JPEG header and structure repair
Stellar Repair for Photo fixes JPEGs with a corrupt header, an invalid file structure, an unknown or invalid marker or a missing SOS marker. If the file's structure can be fixed but the image data itself is damaged, the photo still opens, with color loss or a missing section.
Advanced Repair with a sample file
Stellar Repair for Photo offers Advanced Repair when normal repair fails on a JPEG. You supply a healthy sample photo taken on the same device, and the software borrows its structure to rebuild the damaged one. It works for JPEGs only.

The results list. A photo that needs a sample file gets an Advance Repair link.
Thumbnail extraction as a last resort
Stellar Repair for Photo pulls out the small preview images stored inside a photo when the main image can't be saved. They're saved in a separate folder with names like IMAGE_NAME_T1.jpg. A 120 x 160 thumbnail won't print, but it's better than nothing when it's the only copy of a family photo.
Preview before you pay
Stellar Repair for Photo shows each repaired photo inside the program, including in the free version. That's the point of the trial: you see exactly what you'd get, then decide.

Real-World Uses
- Grey or half-missing pictures. Photos from a failing card open with a grey lower half or a color shift.
- Files from a recovery tool. A data recovery program got the files back, but they won't open. This is exactly the job of a separate repair step.
- Interrupted transfers. The cable slipped or the phone disconnected while copying, and the last batch of photos is unreadable.
- One irreplaceable picture. The file is badly damaged, and a low-resolution thumbnail is still worth having.
Who It's For, and Who Should Skip It
It suits ordinary camera and phone users whose JPEGs or HEICs are damaged, and who want to fix them without learning hex editors. At $39.99 it's a reasonable one-time rescue, as long as renewal is off.
Skip it if your problem is RAW files you plan to edit, because you'll get a JPEG at best. Skip it too if the photos were deleted rather than damaged: that's a job for Stellar Photo Recovery or the Professional edition here. And if you only have two or three JPEGs, try Stellar's free online tool first, since it may solve the problem at no cost.
Usage Guide
- Copy the damaged photos to your hard drive if you can, then install and open Stellar Repair for Photo.
- Click Add Photos and select the files.
- Click Repair and wait. Large batches can take a while.
- Click a file in the results to preview it, and read its label and resolution.
- If a JPEG shows Advance Repair, click it and pick a healthy photo from the same camera or phone as the sample file.
- Happy with the preview? Activate your license, select what you want, click Save Repaired Files and choose a location.
Where it falls short
- RAW support is mostly extraction. DiskTuna's 2019 test on Nikon NEF files concluded it "does not repair RAW files at all, but simply extracts embedded JPEGs". Stellar's current manual and screenshots point the same way.
- A destroyed container can't be read. Stellar's manual says that if the container is too damaged, you'll get an "Invalid image" message and the file can't be repaired.
- Repaired doesn't mean perfect. Where the image data itself is damaged, expect color errors or missing areas. The same manual says so plainly.
- HEIC results are mixed. One Trustpilot reviewer reported that every HEIC photo failed in Stellar's online tool, although that's a different product from this desktop program.
- No sample file, fewer wins. Keep a healthy photo from the same device handy, since Advanced Repair needs one.
What Users Say
There's less independent testing of this product than of Stellar's recovery tools, and the best test around is an old one. Stellar as a company scored 4.8 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 5,601 reviews when we looked, across all its products, and its product page shows 4.7 from 266 reviews. Few of those Trustpilot reviews mention photo repair by name.
A hard test: DiskTuna
DiskTuna tested the 2019 release on real corrupt files. The reviewer also sells a competing repair tool and says so: "Of course I am the author of competing software and as such my review may be biased." The verdict was mixed. "Spoiler: It is able to repair more photos than previous versions!" And on restart-marker JPEGs: "result was rather disappointing, it only recovers tiny thumbnails". On RAW: "Support for RAW photos is a bit disappointing since all Stellar Repair for Photo does is extract embedded JPEG data." He also hit a few crashes during Advanced Repair.
His practical advice is still useful: if a JPEG "does not open at all" and you have no sample file, "then Stellar is a good option to try". If the file opens but looks distorted, he says Stellar can't help. The version has moved on since then, so treat this as a guide to where the limits are.
Trustpilot
JLSY (July 7, 2026, 1 star): "Paid premium for trial via online version, but all the HEIC photos submitted failed to repair." The reviewer added: "Looks like the software is not suitable to repair HEIC photos."
Margaret (September 4, 2025, 5 stars) on pre-sales help: "My representative, Dheeraj Shukla, was extremely helpful to me today" while "figuring out how to see if Stellar would work for my corrupt photo files".
Tech press, quoted by Stellar
Windows Report: "Stellar Repair for Photo turns out to be an easy-to-use Windows application for fixing photographs that were damaged while attempting to recover data."
Ghacks: "Stellar Photo Repair provides a reliable method to bring your cherished memories back from the void."
TechRadar, as Stellar sums it up, calls it a dedicated thumbnail extractor and repair tool, which is a fair description.
The themes: people find it easy, and it does bring back JPEGs that wouldn't open. The complaints are about results that are only thumbnails, files that can't be saved without paying, and formats that didn't repair. The label on each result tells you which group you're in before you spend anything.
Comparisons
Desktop Stellar Repair for Photo vs Stellar's online repair
The online tool repairs three JPEGs free with nothing to install, so try that first for a handful of files. The desktop version is for batches, RAW and HEIC files, and Advanced Repair with a sample file.
Editions and Pricing
| Edition | Price | License | What it does |
| Standard (this listing) | $39.99 | 12 months, one PC | Repairs photos, extracts thumbnails, batch repair |

FAQs
Does Stellar Repair for Photo keep my RAW file as RAW?
Stellar Repair for Photo saves repaired images as JPG, including those from RAW files. It doesn't write a repaired CR2, NEF or ARW, so you can't go back to editing the raw sensor data.
Is Stellar Repair for Photo the same as Stellar Phoenix JPEG Repair?
Stellar Repair for Photo is the current name of Stellar Phoenix JPEG Repair, with added format support. Stellar still uses jpeg-repair in some of its web addresses.
Will Stellar Repair for Photo change my original files?
Stellar Repair for Photo doesn't edit your originals, and Stellar describes it as read-only. It saves repaired copies to the location you choose.
What is a sample file in Stellar Repair for Photo?
A sample file for Stellar Repair for Photo is a healthy JPEG taken on the same device as the damaged one. Advanced Repair uses it to fix severe damage, and it works only for JPEG files.
Can Stellar Repair for Photo recover deleted pictures?
The Standard edition of Stellar Repair for Photo can't recover deleted pictures. It repairs files you already have. Recovery comes with the Professional edition, or with Stellar Photo Recovery.
Why does Stellar Repair for Photo say "Invalid image"?
Stellar Repair for Photo shows "Invalid image" when a JPEG's container is too damaged to recognize. Stellar's manual says those files can't be repaired by the program.
How long does Stellar Repair for Photo take?
Stellar Repair for Photo usually takes minutes for a damaged photo, according to Stellar, and longer for big batches. DiskTuna saw one difficult file take 15 minutes.
System Requirements
- 64-bit Windows 11, 10, 8.1 or 8, or Windows Server 2022, 2019 or 2016
- Intel-compatible x64 processor
- 4 GB of RAM (8 GB recommended)
- 250 MB of disk space for installation
Conclusion
Stellar Repair for Photo is worth $39.99 if you have damaged JPEGs that matter and can't open them. The one reason to buy it is that the free version shows the real result on your real files, labeled honestly, so you know what you're buying.
The main reason not to buy is RAW. If you're hoping to save your CR3 or NEF files as RAW, you'll be disappointed. Try the free online tool for a few JPEGs, try the desktop trial for the rest, and pay only if the preview looks good.
