Repairs corrupt MOV, MP4 and other video files on Mac, with sample-file repair

Stellar Repair for Video for Mac: Bring Back MOV and MP4 Files That Won't Play

Stellar Repair for Video for Mac is a $49.99 one-year program that repairs corrupt or unplayable videos on Intel and Apple Silicon Macs. It suits anyone with a clip QuickTime refuses to open, from drone and dashcam owners to wedding videographers, and the free version repairs the file and plays back up to 20% of it before you pay.

A camera battery dies mid-recording, a card is pulled too early, or a Mac crashes during an export. QuickTime then says the file can't be opened, even though most of the footage is still on the drive. Stellar Repair for Video rebuilds the file's structure, and for badly damaged clips it copies what's missing from a healthy video shot on the same camera.

Quick facts

  • Version: 7.1.0.0, released October 2026
  • Developer: Stellar Data Recovery (this product used to be called Stellar Phoenix Video Repair)
  • Runs on: macOS Golden Gate 27, Tahoe 26, Sequoia 15, Sonoma 14, Ventura 13, Monterey 12 and Big Sur 11, on Intel or Apple Silicon (M1 to M5). A Windows version is sold separately
  • Repairs: AVI, ASF, WMV, MKV, FLV, DIVX, WEBM, MJPEG, MPEG, AVCHD, MTS, MOV, MP4, M4V, 3G2, 3GP and F4V
  • Price: $49.99 for 12 months on one Mac
  • Free version: repairs, previews up to 20% of each video, saves nothing
  • Refund: 30 days from purchase, first purchase only, with conditions
  • What we checked: the download on Stellar's server (96.0 MB, dated September 30, 2026), the Mac manual's screens, the 20% preview limit on Stellar's product page, and the $49.99 price and 12-month renewal on the order page on November 6, 2026. We didn't install the Mac build or repair a video ourselves, so the results below come from the reviewers and users quoted.

Before you buy: what the "LifeTime" button really gets you

Stellar's buy page has a "LifeTime License" toggle, and we tested it. The order page for that option sells "Stellar Repair for Video-Mac [3 Years Subscription]" at $89.99, renewing every 36 months, so it isn't a one-time purchase. The $49.99 plan runs 12 months, and you can turn auto-renewal off at checkout. Also, install the free version and repair your actual file first: Stellar's refund policy refuses buyers who skipped the evaluation version, and it excludes "Special Offer" purchases and renewals.

Overview

On a Mac the program is three screens. You add videos from any mounted volume, including Time Machine backups and Fusion Drives, click Repair and watch the queue. Each file ends up Completed, with a Preview link that opens the result in Quick Look, or Awaiting Action, with an Advance Repair link. Nothing is saved until you ask, and nothing happens to the original file.

Features

Repairs several kinds of damage

Stellar Repair for Video fixes corruption in the header, the video frames, the sound section and the slider, which covers files that won't open as well as those that play with blur, grain, flicker, jerks, black frames or out-of-sync sound.

Footage from almost anything

Stellar Repair for Video handles clips from DSLRs, drones, GoPro cameras, CCTV systems, dashcams and phones, in codecs including H.264, H.265/HEVC, MPEG4, Xvid, DivX and Apple ProRes. Phone clips need to be copied to the computer first, because the software can't read directly from an iPhone or Android device.

Advanced Repair with a sample file

Stellar Repair for Video offers Advance Repair for severely damaged files. You give it a Sample File, which is a working clip of any size from the same device and in the same format, and it uses that clip's information to fix the damaged one. Shoot a few seconds on the same camera with the same settings if you don't have one.

Files that normal repair couldn't fix wait with an Advance Repair link.

Batch repair of mixed formats

Stellar Repair for Video repairs as many videos as you add in one run, in different formats, so a whole card can go through at once. Expect it to take longer the more you add.

Preview before you save

Stellar Repair for Video lets you check each repaired clip before saving. In the free version the preview stops at 20% of the video's size, so a 100 MB file gives you about 20 MB to watch.

Saves to a safe location

Stellar Repair for Video saves the repaired clip to any drive you choose, so you don't have to write back to a failing card. It keeps the original format and quality.

Real-World Uses

  • The camera shut off mid-shot. The battery died, and the MOV or MP4 has no proper ending, so QuickTime won't open it.
  • A wedding or event clip. A one-off recording fails on the Mac, and you can't shoot it again.
  • Files rescued by recovery software. A data recovery tool brought clips back from a formatted card, but they won't play.
  • A failed export or transfer. A crash or an unplugged drive left a damaged file in a Final Cut or iMovie project folder.

Who It's For, and Who Should Skip It

Buy it if you have footage you can't reshoot, and the free preview shows it coming back. For a one-off rescue, $49.99 for a year is a fair price, as long as you switch renewal off.

Skip it if you're only hoping to mend one small file: Stellar's online repair tool offers one free repair, with paid options beyond that, and it's worth a try first. Skip it if the file is truly empty or overwritten, since nothing can rebuild data that isn't there. And if the video plays fine but has shaky camera work or poor lighting, you want an editor, not a repair tool.

Usage Guide

  1. Copy the damaged videos to your Mac's drive, then install and open Stellar Repair for Video.
  2. Click Add Videos and select the files.
  3. Click Repair and wait for the queue to finish.
  4. Click Preview beside a Completed file to check it.
  5. For a file showing Awaiting Action, click Advance Repair and add a sample file from the same device, in the same format.
  6. When you're happy, activate your license, tick the files, click Save Repaired Files and pick a location.

Where it falls short

  • The free version can look like a dead end. It runs the whole repair, then stops you at the save. That's stated on Stellar's page, but several unhappy Trustpilot reviews come from people who expected a free fix.
  • Preview doesn't always work on heavily repaired files. One Trustpilot reviewer's Advanced Repair preview wouldn't play, and support told him it probably would once saved. That makes the buying decision harder.
  • Severe damage may not come back. Files stay at Awaiting Action until you supply a usable sample, and a sample doesn't guarantee a result.
  • The interface has rough edges. Nerd Techy missed drag and drop for adding videos.
  • Phones need a copy step first. It can't read a connected iPhone or Android directly.

What Users Say

Reviews split in a familiar way: tech writers like it, many users are pleased, and a real group is unhappy about failed repairs or paying to save. Stellar as a company scored 4.8 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 5,601 reviews when we looked, across all its products, and its product page shows 4.8 from 529 reviews.

Hands-on: Nerd Techy

Nerd Techy tested it across formats and was "very pleased" overall: "Stellar Repair for Video is a robust video repair software that can fix most types of damage". The review also has complaints. "This is one thing that really could stand to be improved", it says of adding files without drag and drop, and "there's no way to remove a video from the list", although you can deselect one. Those notes are from the version it tested, and its description of a lifetime Standard license doesn't match today's order page, so go by the prices on this page.

Trustpilot: critical reviews

TDF Public (June 28, 2026, 1 star): "I downloaded the "Trial" version of Stellar Repair for Video." The trial ran for about 20 minutes, and saving then needed a license. The reviewer wrote: "No legitimate developer will ever try a stunt like this."

Customer (June 30, 2025, 1 star), on Stellar's online service: "i was told to purchase the online video repair product for 9.99 and it failed twice to fix .mov file."

Dana (July 29, 2026, 1 star), who had recovered videos with Stellar Data Recovery and was pointed to the repair product: "Being able to find missing or deleted files is not beneficial in any way if they can't be opened."

Trustpilot: refund complaints across Stellar products

david deans (March 18, 2026, 1 star): "Stellar offer a 100% guarantee, however if the software doesn't do what you need, there is no guarantee."

Mark Diede (July 4, 2026, 2 stars): "I feel their refund policy is misleading and that no one would meet the requirements to get a refund."

Claus Groth (July 15, 2026, 5 stars) shows the other side, even with a hiccup: "I made an Advanced Repair and the Preview wouldn't play." After talking to support he decided to buy a one-year license.

Press and customers, quoted by Stellar

MakeUseOf: "Stellar Repair for Video is a comprehensive video repair app that allows you to revitalize a wide range of video formats."

Macworld: "Stellar Repair for Video is user-friendly software that doesn't need a working reference video to know how to repair videos."

Mr. Ozan Bitik M.D.: "I rarely write testimonials. This software saved the day for me!"

The themes: people praise the simple three-step process and the sample-file repair, which can save clips that other tools won't. The complaints are about paying to save, repairs that fail on badly damaged files, and refunds. Everything depends on what the preview shows for your file.

Comparisons

Desktop vs Stellar's online repair

Stellar's web tool offers one free repair, with paid options beyond that, and it's the sensible first try. The desktop program adds batch repair, unlimited file size and the sample-file repair, and your footage stays on your own machine.

Stellar Repair for Video vs VLC

VLC can sometimes play a damaged AVI by rebuilding its index, and it costs nothing, so try it first. It's not a repair tool for MP4 or MOV structure damage, which is what Stellar is built for.

FAQs

Is Stellar Repair for Video a one-time purchase?

Stellar Repair for Video isn't a one-time purchase at this price. The $49.99 plan is a 12-month license, and the longer option Stellar labels LifeTime turned out to be a 3-year subscription at $89.99 on the order page. You can keep any video you've already saved after the license ends.

How much of a video can I watch in the free version of Stellar Repair for Video?

The free version of Stellar Repair for Video previews up to 20% of each video's size. Stellar's example is 20 MB of a 100 MB file. You can't save anything without a license.

What is a sample file in Stellar Repair for Video?

A sample file for Stellar Repair for Video is a healthy video of any size shot on the same device, in the same format, as the damaged one. Stellar's Advance Repair uses it to fix severe corruption.

Does Stellar Repair for Video change my original video?

Stellar Repair for Video doesn't change the original file, according to Stellar's manual. You save the repaired version where you choose.

Can Stellar Repair for Video repair a video on my iPhone?

Stellar Repair for Video can repair iPhone and Android videos, but not on the phone. Copy the file to your computer first, then add it from there.

Does Stellar Repair for Video run on Apple Silicon Macs?

Stellar Repair for Video lists support for Apple Silicon from M1 to M5, as well as Intel Macs, on macOS 11 through macOS 27.

Will a video repaired on a Mac play on Windows?

A video repaired by Stellar Repair for Video keeps its original format, so it plays on any computer with a player for that format. MOV and MP4 files play on both.

System Requirements

  • macOS Golden Gate 27, Tahoe 26, Sequoia 15, Sonoma 14, Ventura 13, Monterey 12 or Big Sur 11
  • Intel or Apple Silicon (M1 to M5) processor
  • 4 GB of RAM (8 GB recommended)
  • 250 MB of disk space for installation, plus room for the repaired files

Conclusion

Stellar Repair for Video is worth $49.99 if you have footage you can't reshoot and the free preview shows it coming back. The one reason to buy is the sample-file repair, which gives badly damaged clips a chance that simple tools don't.

The main reason not to buy is that you may not need the full program. Try Stellar's free online repair on a single file first, watch the 20% preview on the desktop version before paying, and turn auto-renewal off unless you repair video regularly.
