Top InstallAware edition adding setup capture, MST creation and MSI import

InstallAware Studio Admin: Repackage Existing Setups and Customize MSIs

InstallAware Studio Admin is a $5,758.56 one-time Windows packaging tool, the top InstallAware X18 edition, which adds setup capture, MST transform creation, MSI import and automation interfaces to Studio. It suits enterprise packagers and teams who build InstallAware into their own systems.

IT departments often receive software they didn't write: a vendor setup with no silent mode, an MSI that needs different defaults, a legacy installer nobody can rebuild. Studio Admin is the edition aimed at that work, on top of everything the other editions do for your own applications.

Before you buy

  • The trial needs a work email. The installer is password protected, and the password goes to a corporate address. Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo and similar addresses are refused
  • You can't ship trial builds. InstallAware says setups built on the trial must not be distributed, so rebuild the project after you buy
  • Maintenance is only sold with the license. Without it, major upgrades stop after 3 months, so decide at checkout
  • Refund: InstallAware has advertised a 30-day money-back guarantee, but the edition pages don't state one. Confirm it with sales before a purchase this size

Overview

Studio Admin is the complete InstallAware X18 edition. Everything from Express, Developer and Studio is included. Its own additions fall into two groups: tools for handling setups you didn't author, and interfaces that let other programs drive InstallAware.

Features

Setup capture with PackageAware

InstallAware Studio Admin includes PackageAware, the Setup Capture Wizard. It records what a program's setup changes on a system, or compares two snapshots, and turns the difference into a ready-to-build InstallAware project.

InstallTailor MST creation

InstallAware Studio Admin creates MSI transform files with InstallTailor and its Transformer. You customize a vendor MSI for your organization, with no change to the original package.

Import of MSI and MSM databases

InstallAware Studio Admin imports existing Windows Installer databases and merge modules into an editable project through its Database Import Wizard, which is the route for moving an MSI-based project over.

Automation interfaces

InstallAware Studio Admin adds an automation interface and a web based automation interface, so your own tools can control setup builds. It also supports direct, driverless setup capture.

Benefits

  • Legacy setups become maintainable projects instead of black boxes
  • Vendor MSIs can be customized for deployment with transforms
  • Packaging can be built into your internal tools

Real-World Uses

  • Enterprise deployment: capture an old EXE setup and rebuild it for silent installation
  • MSI customization: set defaults and remove shortcuts with an MST
  • Project migration: import an MSI built in another tool
  • A software factory: trigger setup builds from an internal portal

Who It's For, and Who Should Skip It

Buy it if you package software for an organization, migrate from InstallShield-built MSIs, or need programmatic control. Skip it if you only ship your own application: Studio costs half as much, and Developer a quarter. If you only need MSI transforms occasionally, Microsoft's free Orca editor can do basic edits.

Usage Guide

  1. Download the X18 trial with a work email, and use the password InstallAware sends you
  2. Choose Studio Admin in the setup wizard
  3. Set up a clean virtual machine, since capture works best on one
  4. Run PackageAware, take a snapshot, run the setup you're capturing, and take a second snapshot
  5. Review the result with the filters, and build the project
  6. Rebuild any setup you intend to distribute after you buy

Where it falls short

  • The price. It's four times Developer, and the extras are specialist tools
  • Capture needs cleaning up. The tool has filters because captures pick up unrelated system changes, so expect to review the results
  • No independent packaging tests. We found no recent third-party test of its capture quality
  • The 2014 speed claims are old. InstallAware's benchmark against InstallShield and WiX is its own and dates from 2014

What Users Say

Few independent reviews of InstallAware exist. Most named comments come from InstallAware's own site, so read them as selected praise.

Customer comment published by InstallAware

"After almost two decades of working with InstallShield, I've seen firsthand how the wrong tools can quietly hold back even the most battle-hardened developers, whole development teams, and pipelines. That's where InstallAware changes everything."

Ferdi Öztürk, InstallAware client page

Independent review sites

G2 shows a 5.0 average, but from only 2 reviews, and G2 itself says there are too few to draw conclusions. One reviewer, a small business founder, reports about eight years of use without problems. SourceForge lists InstallAware Developer with no user reviews at all. We found no InstallAware listing on Capterra.

That is a thin record for a product this expensive, so treat the trial as your real evidence.

Complaints on InstallAware's own forum

"I get "Insufficient Memory" error ONLY when creating - Single self-installing EXE."

TheVman, InstallAware forum, June 2015

"Your site is throttling the download speed preventing me from downloading your product to evaluate."

TheVman, InstallAware forum, June 2015

InstallAware's support replied that it doesn't throttle downloads and suggested the latest build for the memory error. These posts are old, but the large download is still the first hurdle a trial user meets.

The recurring themes: people like the mix of visual editing with script access, the compression and the custom dialogs. The complaints are about size and memory use, and the praise comes mostly from pages InstallAware publishes itself.

Comparisons

InstallAware Studio Admin vs Studio

The additions are InstallTailor, setup capture, MSI and MSM import, driverless capture and the two automation interfaces. Everything else matches.

InstallAware Studio Admin vs InstallShield

These are direct rivals for enterprise packaging, and InstallAware offers a 34% competitive upgrade to InstallShield owners. InstallAware's comparison chart favors itself on macOS and Linux builds, so test your own MSI imports before you decide.

FAQs

Can InstallAware Studio Admin import an InstallShield MSI?

InstallAware Studio Admin imports MSI and MSM databases, so a built InstallShield MSI can go through the Database Import Wizard. Project source files are a separate matter, so test one during the trial.

Do I need a virtual machine for InstallAware setup capture?

InstallAware recommends a clean system for capture, and a virtual machine is the easy way to get one.

Is InstallAware Studio Admin good for a single developer?

InstallAware Studio Admin is more than a single developer usually needs unless they migrate MSI projects. Developer or Studio fit most solo work.

Does InstallAware Studio Admin include Gold Support?

InstallAware Studio Admin includes basic support through the peer forums. Gold Support is a paid add-on.

Does InstallAware Studio Admin include MultiPlatform 2026?

InstallAware sells MultiPlatform 2026 as a separate product at $4,318.56. Its edition chart does tick macOS and Linux builds for Studio Admin, so ask sales which you need.

What does a transform do in InstallAware Studio Admin?

A transform made with InstallAware Studio Admin stores your changes in a separate MST file, applied when the MSI is deployed, so the vendor's original package stays untouched.

System Requirements

  • Build machine: Windows. The single-file download needs a 64-bit OS to unpack
  • Download: web installer 94.7 MB to 5.98 GB depending on what you select, single file 3.93 GB
  • Memory: the 2 GB, 3 GB and 4 GB compression dictionaries need 21 GB, 32 GB and more of RAM while compressing
  • Target systems: Windows XP through Windows 11 and Windows Server 2025, x86, x64 and ARM64
  • Visual Studio: integrates with versions 2003 through 2026, and is only required for the free edition

Conclusion

InstallAware Studio Admin earns its price only if you repackage software or import MSIs regularly. For that work, having capture, transforms and full setup authoring in one tool is the reason to buy. The main reason not to is simple: if you only ship your own product, you'd be paying for tools you won't open.
