Converts InDesign files to IDML to open in Affinity Publisher, QuarkXPress

IDMarkz SE: Open InDesign Files in Affinity Publisher, QuarkXPress or Older InDesign on Windows

IDMarkz SE is a Windows converter from Markzware that turns Adobe InDesign documents (INDD and INDT, from CS4 through InDesign 2026) into IDML, so you can open them in Affinity Publisher, QuarkXPress or an older InDesign, without InDesign installed. It costs $129 a year, or $219 for a perpetual license.

The problem it solves is simple and painful: you've left Creative Cloud, or a client sent you a file from a newer InDesign than yours, and the .indd file simply won't open. Affinity Publisher and QuarkXPress can read IDML, InDesign's exchange format, but only InDesign itself can save one. IDMarkz SE does that step for you.

Quick facts

  • Version: 5.6.1, released October 1, 2026
  • Developer: Markzware, a file conversion and preflight company with 30+ years in publishing software
  • Runs on: Windows 10 and 11 (IDMarkz for macOS is a separate product)
  • Reads: InDesign INDD documents and INDT templates, InDesign CS4 through 2026
  • Writes: IDML, for Affinity Publisher V2 or newer, QuarkXPress 2017 or newer, and older InDesign versions
  • Price: $129 per year (subscription, updates included) or $219 once (perpetual)
  • Needs: an internet connection to activate and register

What we checked: on October 17, 2026 we downloaded the IDMarkz SE installer from Markzware (33.4 MB, which reports itself as "IDMarkz SE 2026 (Version 5.6.1)"), read the release notes, and confirmed both prices on Markzware's product page. We couldn't open the order page itself, and we didn't convert our own InDesign files.

Before you buy

  • IDMarkz SE only makes IDML. How good the result looks then depends on the app that opens it. Affinity Publisher and QuarkXPress each import IDML their own way, so a complex layout may need touch-ups.
  • The Windows edition has fewer features than the Mac one. IDMarkz for macOS also exports PDF and images (PNG, JPG, GIF, TIFF), shows document previews and has an inspector panel. IDMarkz SE does none of those.
  • The subscription stops working if you don't renew. The perpetual license keeps working on the version you bought but gets no new versions without an upgrade fee, and each new InDesign release needs a new IDMarkz SE version.

Overview

IDMarkz SE is a small, single-purpose app. You set a few preferences once (where to save the IDML, what to do if a file already exists, which application should open the result) and then drag InDesign files onto its window. Each file is converted in the background, and a status window tracks the queue.

The IDMarkz SE main window: choose where the IDML goes, Replace or Rename if it exists, low-res image previews, and what happens after conversion. Drag InDesign files onto the box at the bottom. This is Markzware's screenshot of an earlier version.

The neat part is the After Conversion setting. Point it at Affinity Publisher or QuarkXPress, and double-clicking an INDD file in Windows Explorer converts it and opens it straight in that app. To you, it looks as if your layout program can suddenly open InDesign files.

Features

InDesign to IDML without InDesign

IDMarkz SE reads INDD documents and INDT templates from InDesign CS4 up to InDesign 2026 and writes standard IDML. You don't need InDesign or a Creative Cloud subscription on the PC, which is the whole point for anyone who has moved to another layout program.

Opens the result in your layout app automatically

IDMarkz SE can open each converted IDML in the system's default app or in one you choose, such as Affinity Publisher, QuarkXPress 2017 or newer, or InDesign CS6. It can also reveal the file in File Explorer or play a sound when it finishes.

Open newer InDesign files in older InDesign

IDMarkz SE helps when a file was saved in a newer InDesign than yours. InDesign can't open files from later versions, but older versions down to CS4 can open the IDML that IDMarkz SE creates.

Batch conversion and a Conversion Center

IDMarkz SE takes several files at once and queues them, showing completed and failed conversions in a status window. Version 5.5.3 (September 2026) added a Conversion Center that finds and lists the supported files on your drives, and support for the OpenAsset digital asset manager. Version 5.6.1 lets Windows Search find text inside supported documents while the app is licensed, so old InDesign files become searchable.

Low-res previews for missing images

IDMarkz SE can create low-resolution image previews for missing linked images, or for all images, and link the IDML to them. That way a layout whose original photos are gone still opens with something in each frame instead of empty boxes.

Benefits

  • Your archive stays usable. Years of INDD files don't become dead weight when you cancel Creative Cloud.
  • No round trip through InDesign. Converting hundreds of files to IDML normally means opening each one in InDesign. IDMarkz SE does it in a batch, without InDesign.
  • It fits into your normal workflow. Once set up, you just double-click INDD files.

Real-World Uses

  • Leaving Creative Cloud for Affinity Publisher: convert old newsletters, brochures and templates as you need them.
  • A QuarkXPress studio receiving InDesign files: open client INDD files in Quark without keeping an InDesign seat.
  • Opening a newer file in an older InDesign: a colleague on InDesign 2026 sends a file you can't open in CS6.
  • Making an archive searchable: run the Conversion Center over a server of old layouts and let Windows Search find text inside them.

Who It's For, and Who Should Skip It

IDMarkz SE suits Windows-based designers, small publishers, newspapers and print shops who still receive or own InDesign files but don't want to pay for InDesign.

Skip it if you still have InDesign, since it can save IDML itself. If you're on a Mac, buy IDMarkz for macOS, which does more. If you need a PDF or images of the pages rather than an editable layout, the Windows edition can't produce them. And if you only have one or two files, Markzware's online MarkzPortal service may make more sense than a yearly license.

Usage Guide

  1. Install: download the MSI from Markzware and run it. Version 2.0.10 and later add a Start menu entry and a desktop shortcut.
  2. Activate: enter your license. IDMarkz SE needs an internet connection to activate and register.
  3. Set your preferences: pick the IDML output folder, Replace or Rename for existing files, and the low-res preview option.
  4. Choose the target app: under After Conversion, tick "Open IDML in" and select Affinity Publisher, QuarkXPress or another application.
  5. Convert: drag one or more INDD or INDT files onto the window and watch the queue in the status window.

Tips

  • Install the fonts the document uses before you open the IDML, or the layout app will substitute them and text will reflow.
  • Keep linked images in their original folders if you can. Use the low-res preview option only when the originals are gone.
  • If you lose your license email, Markzware's FAQ has a form that sends your license details to the address you bought with, and the license page always has the latest download.

Where it falls short

  • Two-step conversion: IDMarkz SE converts to IDML, then your layout app converts the IDML. Anything the target app doesn't support from InDesign is lost or changed in that second step.
  • A basic interface: IDMarkz SE has no document preview and no file information panel. You only see a file's content once it's open in another app.
  • Recent fixes show rough edges: the 2026 release notes fix conversions failing on file paths longer than 259 characters, the app closing when a conversion failed unexpectedly, and the app not starting on a fresh install.
  • Few independent reviews: almost all published opinions are on Markzware's own site.

What Users Say

IDMarkz SE is a niche tool, and there are few reviews of it outside Markzware's own site. Its product page shows 8 user reviews from December 2021 to December 2022. They're all positive and were collected by the vendor, so read them as testimonials:

Reviews on Markzware's IDMarkz SE page

Shane Simmons, "Smooth Transition To Affinity Publisher" (December 2022): "I do freelance work for small-town newspapers and the cost of Creative Cloud was getting me down. Affinity's apps have fairly good parity for features but can't read .indd files. Thankfully, IDMarkz SE does, and the converted files are usually indistinguishable from InDesign; any differences seem to be on Affinity's end."

Herbert J. Kellner, "Recommended As InDesign Opener" (December 2021): "While working on the manual for the Job Contender, we found out we could no longer open some older, important InDesign files. Because of a very tight budget, we moved away from Adobe software to more affordable apps."

Karsten Risseeuw, CEO of Kursiv GmbH (January 2022): "Anyone who, as a graphic designer or prepress company, has hundreds or thousands of documents in InDesign format, will hardly want to convert all of them with InDesign to IDML. IDMarkz is significantly easier and faster – and even more flexible."

Rosa Arza (December 2021) noted the trade-off: "IDMarkz SE has a simple interface and does not include the Preview and File Information functions as the Macintosh version does. However, it will eventually convert .indd documents, the same way."

The pattern: users who've left Creative Cloud say IDMarkz SE does the one job they need, and that remaining differences come from the target app. The recurring caveat is that the Windows edition is plainer than the Mac one. We found no independent hands-on test of IDMarkz SE's conversion quality.

Comparisons

IDMarkz SE vs IDMarkz for macOS

IDMarkz for macOS is the older, fuller app: it converts to IDML and also to PDF and bitmap images, previews documents, and has an inspector panel and free previews. IDMarkz SE does the IDML conversion and auto-open only. Buy the one that matches your computer, since each runs on one platform.

IDMarkz SE vs keeping InDesign

InDesign can save IDML itself and opens its own files perfectly, but it means an ongoing Creative Cloud subscription. IDMarkz SE costs less per year and is only worth it once you no longer have InDesign.

Markzware says both licenses have identical features, and its product page offers quantity discounts for several seats.

FAQs

Do I need Adobe InDesign installed to use IDMarkz SE?

No. IDMarkz SE reads INDD and INDT files on its own and creates the IDML without InDesign on the computer.

Can IDMarkz SE open InDesign 2026 files?

Yes. IDMarkz SE added support for Adobe InDesign 2026 in version 5.0.2 (February 2026) and reads files back to InDesign CS4.

Which QuarkXPress and Affinity Publisher versions can open the converted files?

IDMarkz SE's IDML opens in QuarkXPress 2017 or newer and Affinity Publisher V2 or newer, according to Markzware. Older QuarkXPress versions can't import IDML.

Can IDMarkz SE convert InDesign files to PDF?

No. IDMarkz SE only creates IDML. PDF and image export are features of IDMarkz for macOS. On Windows, open the IDML in your layout app and export the PDF from there.

Does an IDMarkz SE license work on a Mac?

No. IDMarkz SE is Windows only. Mac users need IDMarkz for macOS, which is sold separately.

Can I run IDMarkz SE from the command line?

Yes. IDMarkz SE can be run from the command line: Markzware fixed command-line runs in version 3.0.6, which makes it usable in scripted batch conversions.

How do I renew an IDMarkz SE subscription?

Markzware emails renewal links in the weeks before an IDMarkz SE subscription expires, and the license page you received at purchase has a renewal link too.

System Requirements

  • Windows 10 or Windows 11
  • 4 GB of RAM
  • 1024 x 768 display or better
  • Internet connection to activate and register
  • QuarkXPress 2017 or newer, Affinity Publisher V2 or newer, or InDesign CS4 or newer to open the IDML

Conclusion

IDMarkz SE is worth buying if you work on Windows, no longer have InDesign, and keep running into INDD files, whether from your own archive or from clients. The one reason to buy it is that it removes InDesign from the loop entirely: drag in a file, or just double-click it, and it opens in Affinity Publisher or QuarkXPress.

The main reason not to is how narrow it is. It only makes IDML, so the final quality depends on your layout app, and the Mac version does more for the same job. If you have only a handful of files, or still pay for InDesign, you probably don't need it. For a steady stream of InDesign files, the $129 yearly subscription is the safer choice, since each new InDesign version needs an IDMarkz SE update.
