Hello everyone. In this video, we
demonstrate the process of recovering
data from a RAID 5 array on a Synology
DS49
NAS in the Mac OS Synoma 14.5
environment. We will cover cases of
logical damage, specifically accidental
deletion of files or folders [music]
and volume formatting. You will learn
how to proceed if the NAS or a specific
disc fails, as well as how to access
data if the RAID drive is lost and
network folders no longer appear. We
also specifically show how to recover
information after deleting a virtual LUN
disk within the disk station manager
environment.
This material will be useful both for IT
professionals and users who work with
Synology network stoages, configure RAID
arrays, manage LUNs and network folders,
and use disk resources for hosting
virtual machines, server services, and
databases.
The Synology DS49 is a
networkattattached storage device
designed for centralized data storage,
sharing documents and multimedia, and
building reliable backup systems for
critical information. The device
supports up to four hard [music] drives
in RAID 0, 1, 5, 5 plus spare, six, and
10 configurations, allowing for an
optimal combination of performance,
capacity, and data protection. Key
features of the DS49 include a gigabit
Ethernet [music] port for high-speed LAN
access, support for SMB or CIFS, [music]
AFP, NFS, and FTP protocols for
compatibility with various operating
systems, and ICSI functions for
connecting to servers and virtual
environments.
The NAS is managed via the user-friendly
disk station manager web interface which
allows administration of disks, users,
and services. The device also supports
automatic backup and data
synchronization with remote servers,
ensuring secure [music] storage and
access to information.
To connect to the Synology DS409 for Mac
OS, the computer and NAS must be on the
same local network. To access the Disk
Station Manager web interface, open any
browser and enter the IP address of the
NAS. On the login page, enter the
username and password for the account
created on the NAS. After authorization,
the DSM web interface will open.
Alternatively, to locate [music] the NAS
on the network, you can install the
Synology Assistant Utility on your Mac.
After installation, run the program. It
will automatically scan the local
network and detect connected NAS
devices. If your device does not appear
in the list, open the preferences menu
in the upper right corner of the main
window and enable the option allow
compatibility with devices that do not
support password [music]
encryption. This setting allows the
program to find older NAS models that do
not support password encryption.
After scanning is complete, select the
desired NAS from the list and click
connect. The program will open the disk
station manager web interface where you
can continue managing storage, creating
or mounting volumes, managing users, and
configuring ice scuzzy LUNs for further
data operations.
If you have accidentally deleted files,
directories, or formatted a LUN, you can
recover the data using Hetman partition
recovery software. [music]
First, let's look at how to create and
connect a virtual LUN disc. To create a
new virtual volume in DSM, use the ice
scuzzy Lun creation wizard. After
logging in, open storage manager. Go to
the ice scuzzi lun tab and click create
to generate a new LUN. In the window,
select the ice scuzzy LUN type regular
files. Next, set the LUN name. Choose
its location location. Define the space
allocation type thin or thick
provisioning. Assign the necessary disk
capacity and link the LUN to a new or
existing ice scuzzi target in the target
mapping section.
After confirming the parameters, a new
Lun will be created available for use in
the MacOSS environment by connecting to
the target.
After successfully creating a LN in DSM,
it needs to be connected in Mac OS to
appear as a logical disc. Various ice
scuzzi clients are used for this
purpose. In this video, Karnsafe is ice
scuzzi initiator will be used for the
connection. On the main screen of the
program, [music] click discovery. In the
next window, enter the NAS IP address in
the empty field. Leave the [music] port
as default and click the add button.
Then on the main screen, click log on.
And in the next window, press the log on
button again. The [music] next step is
to initialize the virtual disc via disk
utility. On the main screen of the
program, select the connected virtual
disc on the left. Then click the erase
button in the upper right part of the
window. In the dialogue box that opens,
give the LUN a name and select the file
system to be used on this disc.
After this, the Lun will be initialized
and will appear in Finder as a regular
disc ready for work.
You can copy test or working [music]
files to it to verify access correctness
and general disk functionality.
So in case of accidental deletion or
formatting of data on a LUN for full
recovery, you can use the Hetman
partition recovery program. It allows
you to scan arrays, [music] detect
deleted or lost files, and recover them
with maximum accuracy. You will find the
link to the program in the description
below the video. After launching the
program, your virtual disc will
automatically appear on the main screen,
indicating the file system, total
capacity, and available partitions. To
start recovery, select the entire disc
or a specific partition with the left
mouse button and start the [music] scan
by doubleclicking or via the context
menu by selecting open. If you need to
recover deleted files or folders, it is
recommended to use the fast scan mode.
In this mode, the program scans the file
system at the metadata and directory
level, detects deleted elements by the
user, and evaluates their integrity.
After [music] the scan is complete, a
list of files and folders available for
recovery appears [music] with a preview
option. The user can select individual
files or directories for recovery, after
which the program restores the data to
the chosen location, preserving the
folder structure and file attributes.
If the LUN was formatted or the data is
seriously damaged, then you should use
the full analysis mode. In this mode,
the program performs a deep bitby-bit
scan of the array, recovers all
available data regardless of the file
system state, and ensures the return of
the maximum amount of information.
After the scan is complete, the dialogue
box will display the data on the LN
available for recovery. [music]
Select the necessary files and folders
[music] and click the recover button in
the upper left part of the main menu. In
the window that opens, specify a
location to save the recovered data on a
different disc to avoid overwriting
existing files and confirm the action
with the recover button. After the
process finishes, click finish. All data
from the LN become available for work
again.
In case of hardware damage or firmware
failure when [music] it is impossible to
connect to the Synology DS49 directly or
via the web interface, you can use
Hetman RAID recovery software to recover
lost information. The link to the
program is provided in the description
below the video. Before starting the
recovery process, [music]
ensure that the drive where you plan to
save the data from the RAID array has
sufficient free space [music] to
accommodate all the information.
Be sure to record the exact order of the
discs in the RAID [music] array before
taking any action. Each disc performs a
specific role in data storage and par
calculation. So swapping them can lead
to file corruption, disruption of the
array structure and significantly
complicate recovery. To avoid additional
risks of data loss, it is recommended to
document the location of each disc in
advance and check the connection
correctness before starting the recovery
procedure. To do this, connect the
drives to a Mac computer, [music] for
example, via a docking station. If
physical connection of all discs is
impossible, you can use an alternative
approach. Create an image of the
inaccessible drive and connect it for
further analysis and data recovery. This
method was discussed more detail in
previous videos on our channel.
Automatic [music] RAID parameter
recognition.
Launch Hetman RAID recovery. The program
will automatically detect all connected
drives and analyze their status,
attempting to restore the RAID
structure. The main window will display
the found discs and reconstructed arrays
available for further scanning and data
recovery. After the scan is complete, a
dialogue box will display the contents
of the RAID array available for
recovery.
Select the necessary files and folders
and click the recover button at the top
of the main menu. In the next window,
specify a location to save the recovered
data on a different disc to avoid
overwriting existing files and confirm
the action with the recover button.
After the process finishes, click
finish. All data from the RAID array
become available for work again.
If the program failed to automatically
recognize the disk array, you can use
the built-in RAID constructor in Hetman
RAID recovery to manually recreate the
RAID [music] configuration and
subsequently access the data. To work in
the RAID constructor, you also need to
know the basic parameters of the array
set during its creation. RAID type,
block order, block size, and bytes per
sector. For RAID 5, the following values
are used in most cases. Block order,
left synchronous, block size 64 kilob,
bytes per sector 512.
In the available discs [music] field,
select the discs of your RAID array and
move them to the selected discs field on
the left, maintaining the correct order
of arrangement in the array.
If one of the discs cannot be physically
connected, [music] you can use the add
empty disc function, which allows you to
add a blank disc [music] to simulate the
missing drive. At the same time, it is
extremely important [music] to maintain
the correct sequence of discs in the
RAID array as violating it can lead to
incorrect array [music] reconstruction
and make data recovery impossible.
After that, click the change disk offset
and size icon and enter the offset value
94392
320.
Before confirming, ensure that the
measurement units are set to sectors.
This action must be performed for all
real discs except for the simulated
empty disc.
Then click update at the bottom of the
window to apply changes. If the
parameters are entered correctly, at
least one partition with the specified
file system will appear in the the
resulting RAID array field.
Check its contents to ensure the
required folders are present. Then click
the add button in the bottom right
corner to add the recovered RAID array
to the main page of the program for
[music] further scanning and data
recovery.
If a LUN was deleted or formatted in
MacOSS and you need to get the data
back, you can use Hetman RAID recovery
for this. After the RAID array is
correctly reconstructed in the RAID
constructor, scanning is performed and
analysis results appear on the main
screen of the program. You need to find
the directory where the LUN is stored.
The virtual disc is located in the
system folder at CSIT TRG. It appears
among the found data in the list of
scanned partitions and this is where the
LUN is located as a file available for
subsequent saving.
Click the recovery button as shown in
the video. In the window that opens,
click next. Select save on hard disk and
specify the folder to save the image.
After the process is complete, the image
will be created and you can reconnect
all discs for further work with the
program. Next, in the main program
window, click the mount disk button on
the top panel. In the new window, select
raw disk images. Click next and specify
the previously saved LUN file. After
this, the file will be mounted as a disk
image. you will be able to open it,
perform a scan, and recover the
necessary data by saving it to another
disc.
This segment of the video covers the
situation where a virtual LUN disc was
deleted in DSM [music]
or became unavailable due to a software
failure. It shows how to proceed when
the LUN no longer appears in the system,
but the RAID array itself is
successfully reconstructed and available
for analysis. In this case, instead of
the original LUN, its [music] previously
recovered file is used, allowing you to
continue working with data without
[music] reconstructing the RAID array
again. Previously, we showed where the
virtual disk file is stored and how to
recover it to a computer. Next, let's
look at how to upload this file back to
the NAS for further use and restoration
of full data operation. After restoring
the NAS functionality or reinstalling
and reconfiguring DSM, it is necessary
to create a new LUN with the same
parameters used previously.
Next, upload the saved LUN file to any
convenient folder created in DSM. This
can be done via the file station section
in the DSM web interface. To do this,
open File Station and select upload.
Next, select upload with the skip
option. Then specify the LUN file to
upload to the appropriate folder. The
upload progress will be displayed in the
upper right corner of the window where
you can monitor the process status until
its full completion. To perform further
actions, you need to enable SSH [music]
access to the NAS. This setting is
configured in the DSM web interface.
Go to control panel and open the
terminal section. Then in the terminal
service options block, enable the enable
SSH service option by checking the
corresponding box and save the changes.
After activating SSH, it becomes
possible to connect to the NAS via the
terminal. The DSM system has a built-in
root system account which has full
access rights to the file system and NAS
system directories. In the DSM versions
used on the Synology DS409,
the root account does not have a
separate password. When connecting via
SSH, it uses the admin user password.
This ensures the ability to perform
administrative operations at the system
level.
Open terminal and connect to the NAS by
entering the command SSH [music]
root at NAS IP address. for example,
root [music]
at 1 192.168.0.202.
The system will then request the root
user password, the usage order of which
was explained earlier. After successful
connection, enter the command ls/ to
view the contents of the [music] root
directory. Next, go to the volume
created earlier in DSM using the command
cd/vol
1 to view its contents and verify the
existence of the LUN directory. Execute
the command ls/vol
1. After that, go to the directory
cd/vol
1/iscuzzy
trig. It will display the virtual LUN
disk just created in DSM which at this
stage does [music] not yet contain data.
This file will be used for substitution
and information recovery. You can also
navigate to the directory using commands
cd/vol
1/5
and then execute ls to view the uploaded
lun file that will [music] be used for
copying into the new virtual disc with
the command cp/volume
1/5
image/iscuzzy1_lun_1_000000
/ volume
1/iscuzzytrig/iscuzzy1_lun_1_000000.
We copy the saved LUN file with data is
scuzzy1_l_1_000000
into the atcuzzy trig folder. replacing
the newly created empty file is
scuzzy1_lun_1_000000
in DSM via terminal. Thus, the LUN has
been restored and it can be mounted and
connected for display in finder. All
data inside the disc remained in place
and it is again available for [music]
work as a regular connected disc. This
allows you to verify the recovered data,
evaluate its structure, and ensure that
important information is fully preserved
before further work.
In this video, we demonstrated a
practical method of data recovery. If
this information was useful to you,
please subscribe to the Hetman Software
channel and watch for new materials. If
you have any questions or need [music]
help regarding this video, leave them in
the comments and we will explain working
with LUNS and NAS in detail and show how
to recover data quickly, safely, [music]
and conveniently. Thank you for watching
and we wish for your data to always
remain protected.
