Nexus 7 Free Cell Phone: Groove IP Lite Review

I use my google Nexus 7 tablet as my one and only cell phone, and it's always available to make or receive a phone call or text message, even when I'm out shopping, working, or on the road, but I don't pay any monthly subscription fees! To make it work (and to keep it working all the time), I added 3 extra components. Here's how I did it! Additional details here:

this is a groove IP light review my
google nexus 7 tablet came without any
cellular radio hardware so but we often
for internet access relies on life I at
first I had no way to use it as a cell
phone but i love this little tablet it's
just the right size for my needs and its
speed and powerful
it's also inexpensive with no monthly
subscription fees
you gotta love that skype help me with
my voice communications but it just
wasn't enough and I i found a great
solution in spite of its lack of
cellular phone hardware
i'm using mine as mine as my one and
only cell phone for more than a month
now
I take it with me everywhere I go I'm
always ready to receive or make phone
calls
even while out shopping or one on the
road furthermore in spite of many many
phone calls it has increased like costs
by even one penny I have already
overcome the cellular internet access
limitations with my freedompop celular y
Wi-Fi router as described in our august
2013 review it makes a great companion
to today's project if you haven't seen
our article from from august on this

also already discovered google voice
which allows me to get an additional
telephone number with powerful new
internet management tools using this
google based tools I can figure that new
phone number to automatically forward
any incoming calls to my home phone
my office phone and to my wife's cell
phone I also configured custom voice
reading messages for friends and family
members all that is old news but it
turns out to have been strategically I
decided to investigate using my tablet
as my cell phone
the final component is a free Android
app known as groove IP light available
in google's app store in order to use it
you must already have google voice
installed using your google voice phone
number
it emulates a cell phone over your Wi-Fi
connection to the internet
whenever and wherever you are in Wi-Fi
range so my cell phone my cell phone
solution and three components to my
plain vanilla google nexus 7 tablet
one google voice to groove IP like for
android and three
freedompop's free for gene wimax service
even if you can only use the first two
of those three compliments you can make
and receive free phone calls at any free
Wi-Fi hotspot with that final component
this one
you need never be out of touch as long
as you don't use up the generous three
data offered by freedompop each month
you can find groove IP light in Google's
well-known three google
play store just like any other free app
installed just like any other app with
no nasty surprises installers just 1.7
megabytes in size so it's small by
today's standards and it downloads
quickly during the installation process
it uses android app permissions facility
to inform you that it needs permission
to access and update all the facilities
that you would expect of a modern
internet aware communication device
if you're paranoid you may find its list
of permissions intimidating but each
seems to be justified as documented by
explanatory text accompanying each
listing permission
well I certainly have not reverse
engineer the apt to verify that all of
its features are implemented properly
but I don't detected any more level of
activities during my six weeks of
relatively heavy use
I think it's harmless and certainly for
me it's been worthwhile
once installed groove IP light steps you
naturally through its set of
requirements a screen prompts you to
enter your Google accounting the one is
associated with your google voice phone
number google voice then ask you to
confirm permissions for groove IP like
to use that account after that groove I
feel like displays a screen full of
helpful advice regarding configuration
google voice to best advantage
once it's configured the app displays a
large telephone style keypad pretty much
as you'd expect of any telephone drop
down menu along the top edge allow you
to pick allow you to look at logs of
recent phone calls or recent SMS
messages
you can also access your google contacts
list to retrieve any phone numbers that
you may have that they have ever been
put there in your google with placing a
phone call is easy and intuitive
if you know the phone number you can
just dial it exactly as expected in the
large display keypad
if you need to look people up in google
contacts you'll find them listed
alphabetically by first name and then
- simple taps on a display name when you
drill all the way to the phone number
and start a call
the app is configured through the

containing pretty much everything I
could think of including the ability to
designate and audio file for use as an
SMS ringtone and some calls is easy and
intuitive when one comes in
unless you can figure for silence you'll
hear your Android ringtone and your
device's standard notification system

into the call at first I had some
problems with voice quality people were
telling me that they could be very well
and they had trouble understanding Lee
but they were hearing their own voice
echoing back to them when i wear
headphones the problem went away but
unlike that solution
once the plug-in a pair of headphones
every time the phone rings so did around
the internet
I learned that my google nexus 7 tablet
actually has two microphones one here on
the top and one on the side
one of them is used for listening and
the others for use for echo cancellation
notice that one of these two microphones
can easily be covered up by my thumb if
I was not careful the way I held the
device especially if i put it into the
carrying case i have this carrying case
here if I'm not careful when I hold it
in general I hold like this with a flat
halfway open like a book
it covers up that extra microphone so i
learned to fold it all the way back at
that point my audio problems went away
I learned to keep that second my phone
cover and people began to report
excellent sound quality for my phone my
phone calls
even though groove IP like is always
running in the background
I've been pleasantly surprised to see
that it did not significantly dream
better and has yet to ever show up in my
list of top eight battery hogs and I'm
sure my batteries lasting at least
ninety percent as long as it did before
him
never use is also fairly modest my
android device reports that groove I
feel like he's using four point six nine
megabytes of application storage and 200
kilobytes of data with an additional 812
kilobytes of in its cache if you're
looking for a way to save money
you might consider dumping your
expensive cell phone subscription and
replacing the groove IP light and
freedompop as i described
I like it has been working well for me
keep in mind though that you will not
have the usual access to 911 calls
through the system will be a good idea

local police and fire departments on the
back of your phone so you can call them
