(besides being an absolute MUST if you want to become self sufficient. I sell fertile eggs and trade with the neighbours and we rear cockerals for the freezer. All scraps are boiled up in a big pot and fed back to the chickens so nothing goes to waste around here!
I have the following breeds: Houdans (fancy) , North Holland Blues (dual purpose) (both these two are rarebreeds) Rhode Island Reds (dual purpose), White Leghorns (layers), Pekin Bantams and Araucanas (they lay the blue/green shelled egg) The dog and cat follow me around the garden and orchard while I feed the chooks and get some eggs. It is spring here in New Zealand so the daffodils and freisias are out and I caught a Tui in my Kowhai tree!
