and this is gonna be a little tour of
the kitchen garden acres our little farm
hair on the bay right now behind me is
one of the sets of chickens this is all
buff Orpingtons and this is my little
brooding patch and what i like to call
the chicken tractor little portable pen
I can move around from place to place so
the chickens always have access to fresh
grass something to eat on and we never
wear out the soil underneath them right
now I got about eight buff Orpingtons
and they're gonna be my little brooding
clutch you got a rooster seven hands and
hopefully we'll get some fertilized egg
so we could set under broody hen and in
28 days or so after that we can have us
chicks
we've got my daughter's cotswold sheet
you he's being used for wool and we've
got them in a little portable electric
pen that we move around and keep him on
track sprays always that way on the
little acre that we've got here we don't
wear out any one piece of ground after
the Sheep has been raising this out we
move it we pull in the chicken tractor
and the chickens clean up with the
sheets left behind and they graze on
anything left and clear it out keep the
bugs down keep the soil nice and healthy
our initial batch of chickens is
maturing finally got them here in this
pen
well we sort out and call the cock rolls
from the bullets
this is just a little temporary holding
pen will they grow a little larger we
keep it well supplied with fresh green
grass plenty of stuff to forage on
plenty of bugs for them to eat some of
these are going to go onto the table the
buff orpington hands that are in here
and any of the hens will go on to become
egg layers and they'll join some of the
older laying hens in the field next door

so much talk of the avian flu pandemic
and all the rest of them
gibberish coming out of the world
governing bodies about it you gotta
wonder healthy well looked-after
chickens like this certainly hardly seem
like they could get sick it's all about
keeping things in balance
here in the orchard apart from Alana
cranky hands we have the newest addition
to the kitchen garden menagerie young
torino jersey and Scottish Highland
steer cap and eventful morning here farm
Torinos met all of chickens had a
tete-a-tete with you the sheep and God's
out why an electric fence now he's going
after the camera
ok
he's a little skittish to say the least
but we're hoping to make him feel
welcome here on the far and help them to
be a happy and productive member of the
family
it'll take them a few days to get
settled in i'm not sure whether we'll
keep them in the orchard because there
are the trees to consider
however it will begin to like it here as
much as we do i'm sure
three nose for months old now he'll stay
with us to the next 20 months getting
fat on the rich natural Island grassland
they'll have to participate in haying
this year hopefully partnering with a
couple of neighbors so that i can
exchange my labor for a hundred or so
quality bales of fresh island grass hay
a lot of work you might say but I think
it's worth it because I think our young
friend is going to be quite delicious
in the end
