Tutorial on how to import data from an Excel spreadsheet or .CVS file into HomeManage home inventory

Street software the subject of this
tutorial is how to import data into home
managed home Inventory software and we
we often have customers who are either
using a spreadsheet to store their
previous data or perhaps another home
Inventory program uh last week we had a
customer who was using believe it was
called my stuff Deluxe and she wanted to
change programs and so she needed to
import the data into home manage
obviously she didn't want to type in all
that the data once again into our
program so basically the way it works is
if you can if in your original program
you can export your data to spreadsheet
or CSV format you can then import it
into home manage so here's what the
spreadsheet she exported look looked
like uh and what you can do we prefer
CSV format because they remov some of
the formatting of the cells that can
cause problems when importing so what
you can do is C file save as as this is
a Microsoft Excel 2013 so if you have
Excel it may look different and then
you're going to select the file type and
the file type is going to have to be CSV
comma
delimited so we've already done that so
let's just go back to the program and
we're in home manage you select file
import and we're going to choose the
type CSV text files CSV tab. tab
Etc and the file we have is
here now the next screen you can see is
a field matching screen and also at the
bottom here you'll see kind of a preview
of what the import file looks like and
what we need to do is match up the
fields from the original data file into
our program um and noticed here there's
a Fields called title and artist and we
don't have in home manage we don't have
Fields with that exact name but what you
can do is cancel out here you can select
tools
preferences click on on the field names
Tab and home manage allows you to create
up to 100 user defined text Fields so
create one called
artist then user field 2 will call it
title so that means every record in home
manage now will have additional text
field artist and title so back to the
import file import select the same
file now we have those uh two Fields
Title and artist already
predefined now we have to match up some
additional Fields so purchase date would
correspond to date purchased in our
program and one thing we noticed is if
you see the location here uh it seems to
pertain to the room not the actual phys
location
so scrolling around here we see there's
also field in the original fun home
which seems to pertain to the actual
location so so what we can do is instead
of mapping location to location we'll
going to map it to
room and down here home we're going to
match to
location so we go ahead and do
that original cost we have a field
called total
cost so we'll match it to now okay so we
go ahead and hit okay
okay and as you can see it created a
location called
Sarnia
and added added uh these three rooms and
that's the data imported now if you make
a mistake you can uh select Control Alt
shift X and what that'll do is delete
all the data and you can then go ahead
and uh try and import it
