Introduction To PCDJ DEX 3 DJ Software - Quick Start Video

PCDJ DEX 3 Introduction Video - we cover the basics. Includes explanation of DEX 3 GUI/SKIN, using the basics of the new browser, settings and how to connect a supported DJ controller (or using Learn to map one we don't already support)
Closed Caption:

How are you all?
This is Ryan Sher from PCD DJ
Dex 3. This is an introductory video
about Dex 3. A
quick start guide to help you
get started and mixing as quickly as
possible. First,
I will give you a description of what you
see before you. Dex 3 is an
entirely new platform, and it forms the
basis of our
development plans for the
next 5 to 10 years. There are
many more
updates on the
way. We will continue to
release new videos
as additional features become available
. Dex 3 is
our flagship
music mixing (DJ) software, which
allows you to seamlessly mix everything,
both audio and video
, as well as
host karaoke. Let me
explain a little about what
you see at the beginning here.
When you open the program,
which is one of the
key new features,
it will
automatically adjust to your screen.
Its size changes
dynamically.
Basically, we have a
high-resolution interface (Skin) that is
scaled down to fit any
screen. By default, when
you open the program you will see the
default
four-platform audio interface. To explain
what you see here,
you have Platform A at
the top, which is a
fully featured platform. Platform
A and Platform 1, Platform B and
Platform 2, Platform 3 and Platform
C, Platform 4 and
Platform D. Well, this
is the interface of the four
virtual platforms. You can
also display the
video screen in the middle
by simply clicking the
video button at the top.
The video will display a preview of
your videos. Platforms A
and B are used for
video mixing and also for
karaoke. Platforms C
and D are dedicated to audio only.
You can switch between
video and audio mode
simply by clicking
these buttons at
the top. If you do not
wish to use four
platforms, which
many may prefer,
you can quickly change the interface
to a two-
platform interface by going to
Options at
the top. Click on "
Options", and under the
"General" tab,
you will find a drop-down menu
to choose the
user interface/interface.
Choose the interface for both platforms.
Now you can choose the
default audio interface for both platforms
or the video interface. It doesn't
really matter which you choose,
because you can switch
between these two modes
directly through the
interface. I will
choose the interface for both
platforms. As you can see
here, we have two platforms.
If you click the
video button to switch to
video mode, it
actually replaces
the interface with a
video interface. As you can see
here as well, one of the
new features is
large, independent video preview screens for each
playback platform. For platform "A"
and platform "B". The video
in the middle represents what
your audience sees on
your display screen. So
you can switch between these
modes from here at the
top. Below
is the browser, and
in the middle are the mixing console sections
, which can also be
replaced by the
sampling and effects sections.
Under any of these modes
, you can still
access the
controls for "Cross Feeder"
and "Mix Now". That's all there is to it
.
Your browser is located below. What
you will see at the beginning is not
much. You
will have the navigation
and browser here on
the left, allowing you
to browse the drive,
add menus, and the
like. In the middle
is the window that
displays the contents of any of the
lists you have
accessed, any
folders on
your drive, or your
favorite folders.
The contents will appear here in
the middle, and on the far
right is the
new side menu.
So, this is a description of what
all these
elements do here. Of course
you have the search bar. The
following will be how to
use this browser,
and how to add
music to the
program. Good. Here is
your new browser
, which has been
completely redesigned
for the "DEX 3" program. Most
users will want
to do what's new in "
DEX 3"; In "DEX 2",
when browsing folders on the
hard drive, only the
file names appeared
. It was
purely dynamic. It was
exactly like browsing through
folders on your
hard drive, as they
took time to load
when opened. It was reading
the data in
real time, and you were
only seeing the file names.
In "DEX 3",
tag information will be displayed
for any folder you access.
For me, I will
quickly move to where I
store my music on the
"D" disk. As you can see, it's much
faster. It is much more
powerful. This is a
real database in "
DEX 3". The
first time you click
on or access a folder, it
may take some
time because it is
creating an
internal cache.
I will explain that. Unlike "
DEX 2", any folder you
browse once
and view its contents is
automatically added to the
internal search database. This means
that if you access a
folder once,
you will be able to search for
any files that are inside
that folder. Because of this,
the way
most people preferred
to use the library in
the past was based on
using the
database as the
main menu, which is something you
can still do,
but it is not necessary.
Once you reach a folder that
you use frequently, in
my case, I would take
my entire music folder and add it
to my favorites.
Right-click, then
select Add to
Favorites. What has just happened,
as you can see here, is that
under the Favorites list, I now
have
my own Music folder,
which also maintains the subfolder structure
. Now, whichever
of these folders you have
accessed so far
, when data is loaded
here in the middle,
that information is added
to the internal database and
search cache.
Therefore, I will
also make my music videos folder a favorite
by right-clicking
and adding it to favorites.
You will now see under the
Favorites list that I have a
Music Videos folder
and a
My Music folder. Because I
accessed this
folder once and the
data was downloaded, it is
now
searchable. In fact, it is not
necessary to use the
database
unless you want to make it a
master list for
your music, or if you are one
of those people who
have artist folders that contain
album folders on the
disk. Obviously, it can
be tedious to
go through each folder
and open it once to view
the information, thus
adding it to the
tag cache, or rather the
search cache. So, you might
just want to add everything
to the database
as well, which wouldn't hurt
anything. It is not
necessarily necessary to use them.
Perhaps when you do
your research, you will come across that
folder. It doesn't really matter
because when you search, it
searches through all the lists.
But it may be a
quick way to add everything
to the
search cache instead of
having to open
folders one by
one under Favorites.
I'll show you that quickly.
You can
right-click on
your folders under Favorites
or under Explore view.
If you
right-click, you will see the option
to add to
database, which is what
I will do. A notification appears
stating that the folder has been added
to the database. That was the
small dialog box that I
quickly closed. Now,
if you go up to the
database, you will see that it is
loading my
entire
music folder collection, which I
estimate to be around 10,000 files,
onto this
particular machine,
my test machine.
As you can see, the album art will appear for
any music tracks that have
album art attached. If you don't have an
album cover
, there are some
great tools available that will help
you add one.
One of them is
Media Monkey. I know that
many people have been
using it recently.
MusicBrainz Picard is another
very good tool. It helps
in fixing tags, or
handling asynchronous tags
, as well as
adding
album art to songs that
lack it. That's all
. It is now located in
my database and under the
user list. So,
most people, as I said,
will probably
add all their folders
to their favorites. If you are
organized on
your drive,
especially if you have
folders for each genre of music
, this is a great way
to do it.
Simply add each of the
music genre folders as a
separate favorite, and you will have
essentially built your library.
And again, as long as you
access a particular list
once, or rather
open that folder,
it will be added to the
search cache. Another thing
you can do,
of course, is create
playlists for
specific events and the like.
Some may even want to
create lists if they
have a lot of
subfolders
inside other folders. For
example, if I wanted to
convert my "breaks" folder
into a
playlist, I could
go to the folder
here and select "
New playlist from folder". A
new playlist has been created based on the
selected folder. So,
under "List", you will
now see that I have a folder called "
Bricks". What is unique about
doing it this
way is that it does not
preserve the structure of the
subfolders. Rather, it
adds every file located in the
main folder, as well as
any folder under it, to that
single list.
This may be convenient for some
who have many
folders within folders and
do not want to browse
in this way,
preferring instead to
have a single level that
contains all
their files. You can create a
user list this
way and use it like this
. Of course, you can
also create
user lists manually.
Right-click here
on the user menu,
and select "
New Playlist". Brian's party.
Write the name. Now you
will have an
empty playlist here. Now
, adding music
to it is easy. You can
just drag and drop.
Use
music videos. I can
simply drag it here
to "Ryan's Party".
These songs will be included in the
list. I
double-tap the song.
And I'll explain to you why it appears
there, because of my clumsy double-tapping
here. Oh,
Ryan's party. And Ryan's party.
Good. So, when I
click on "
Ryan's Party" now, I will see all the
songs I just added
. Well, I was
pulling from one of my
favorite folders, which is
my music video folders.
Oh, but of course you can
also pull from the search results to fill in that
list. Those lists will remain
as they are. Um,
now let's assume you're at the
beginning of your career. You have created a
user list and want to
send everything, or
rather use the
queue. I'll
delete this quickly.
You can now remove
songs from any
user-created playlist or from the
sidebar here, the
new queue or
sidebar/
singers list, just by selecting
the song and pressing the
delete key on the
keyboard. So to send the
songs here, which
I did by
mistake, because I was
double-clicking on the clips
instead of clicking
once and dragging. But
sending songs to the
sidebar is
very easy.
Again, you can
double-click on that section, and
you'll see that it will end up
here in your
new sidebar.
You can also drag and drop
files. Drag
and drop will work the same
way. Now, there is
another way, of course,
if you have created a
user playlist for
your event here and want to send
everything to the queue
. Well,
instead of having to go
through and select all the
files individually,
which of course would be tedious
, especially if it's a
very long list
, you can send everything
to the sidelist
by simply right-clicking
and selecting Send All
to Sidelist (
Sidelist Automix). You know,
from
this right-click menu,
you have a lot of
options. Of course,
you can upload directly
to the playing platforms (decks
). You can analyze the
tempo speed (BPM) of the clip you are
working on by
simply clicking on "Analyze" or "
Analyze All". It will
analyze all the songs
within the list for
tempo speed,
waveform, and pulse network.
All of this will be accomplished in a
single analysis process.
So, for this reason,
when you arrive at your work,
you want to put everything
on a queue for
use overnight.
I can right-click
and select Send all
to sidebar
(queue). Therefore,
everything will be sent immediately from the
selected list,
whether it is a
favorites folder or a
user list. Everything will be sent
to the side menu.
Next, we will talk
a little about using the
side menu in "
AutoPlay" and "
Shuffle".
Good. So, you have created your sidebar
here
for your event. Oh, and
I want to take a break,
or step away, or interact with the
audience, or something like that.
Of course, you can manually drag
and drop songs
from here, or
simply click on a
song and press the
download button, and it will be
downloaded to your
chosen device. This is one
way to add songs.
You can also drag it
directly to the device from
here. You can also
rearrange the songs
in your playlist by
dragging them up and down
as you see. And there's a
really great feature, because quite
often you might
receive a request from a customer
unexpectedly, and you might want
to run the next one. You may
not want to wait
until the end of the
playlist, because if
you see here, if you
double-click on that
track, it will move
to the bottom of the list.
Okay, I want to move it
upwards quickly. So, all I have to
do now in the
sidebar is
double-click on that
path. It will be moved to the
top. So it's
very easy. You can also
mix up the list. Make it
completely random
by pressing "Shuffle". This
will
completely reshuffle the list.
Each time you click, it
will be shuffled again.
Now, if I want to
use
automatic mixing here, I can
simply press "
auto". I already have a song
loaded on
device B, but you'll see what
happens. Once
the mixing starts there, it will
load the next track
from the top of the
sidebar to the
other device, and so on. I'm going to
speed through this
quickly so you can
see it again. I have
lowered the
volume levels here so that the
sound is not too loud.
So we'll move on to the
next track, and watch
what happens with the song "Wolves
" here. Once completed,
that track will be pulled
to the other operator.
Basically, when
automatic mixing is activated
, it will move from one track to
another via the
side menu from device A
to device B and then back to
device A and so on
. And this, as
you know, does not depend on the
user interface. If
you use the
four-device interface,
devices A and B will still be used for
automatic mixing. This is all it
needs
to use. This gives
you access to devices C and D. If
you want to mess with songs,
preview them, or prepare
other songs to mix into a
remix or something similar,
you can use
devices C and D for that.
This is how the
automatic mixing works from the
side menu. Another
great feature of
this version is that you
can now use the
side queue as a list of
singers. So, we'll go
to the
video tab to see that.
We will clear this
list. I'm now going to
add one of
my karaoke folders as a favorite
, and you can see
this process again. We will go here
.
Karaoke volumes. Here we are.
Chartbuster. Add to
favorites. We will add it to the
favorites. Under the
Favorites section, you will find
Chartbuster's
karaoke tracks. So, these
are the karaoke songs.
What's different about adding a
karaoke track to a
singer's sidebar? And
of course, there are
library filters that I need to explain
quickly. If you are on any
list and are not sure
whether to view
karaoke,
audio, or video files,
you can click on one of
these filters. It is
clear that there are no
video files in this
list. If you click
on karaoke, it is
clear that all the songs
here are karaoke.
The audio is there, nothing
. So, these are just
quick library filters to show
you exactly what you're looking for.
If you are not sure
whether the content is
karaoke, audio or
video, just click on
one and you're good to go.
Now, if I
double-click on a
karaoke track
to send it to the
sidebar, or drag it,
the program will ask me for the
singer's name.
What you will see in the
sidebar is that the singer
"Bob" is here. I will add
another singer. Gene. Jimmy. I
now have three songs
on my sidebar.
You will notice something
very remarkable. If you pause
playback here, between
songs or
karaoke tracks, the
next singers will appear on
the screen; by default, the
next three will be displayed. So, like anything
else, I can
upload it to the player.
Oh, I left the auto-start feature
enabled, which is probably a bad idea
. So,
we will stop this. We will
operate this route.
The words will be
clearly displayed on the screen,
which you can
of course send to your
secondary screen. There will be
different videos and I will go into
more depth about these things, including
how to send the
secondary video to the
second screen. It's a very simple process
. But I will release
separate videos for each
of these components
in more detail over
time. That's all
. Essentially, the
singers' roster and the
waiting list will handle
all three tasks. You can
combine audio,
video, and karaoke files
at any time. So, if
you want to play
timed music between karaoke songs,
singers, or segments,
you can arrange the
audio clips with
karaoke songs and
videos in your
sidebar. One of the great things for
karaoke users is the ability to
easily merge video clips between
singers' segments. You are already using the
second screen
to display
song lyrics. So why not
incorporate some
video clips into your paragraphs
? We have partnered with
Videopool, which you can find in the
music section of
our website, to bring you
high-quality, high-definition music videos in
MP4 format at a
very low price. This is the
basic way to make a
side menu with
audio, video and
karaoke. Regardless
of what you use, you can
activate automatic mixing
, arrange your queue
for the night, and
I'll go into
more detail about this in the
next video. Now
that you understand the library
well, or at
least the basics of it
, and inserting music via the
side menu,
let's talk a little about
the options here. In the
options mode, click on
Options. Click the
options button to access
your settings. You have a
general tab, an audio tab, and a
control tab. In the
general tab, we have already
touched on this.
You can choose the
user interface, whether you
want to use a
two-platform or four-
platform look. Most of these
options are self-evident
. Show hints
. When this option is enabled
, a hint will appear
as soon as you hover your
mouse cursor over any button or
function. Yes, what is this
thing? What is the function of
this button? In general,
if you are still learning
the program, you may want to
activate this option.
Reset the platform after
loading. This means that
when you upload a song to the
platform, if you make any
adjustments to the
equalizer (EQ),
volume level, or anything else,
or pitch,
it will be reset to
zero or
neutral. Reset the
volume level after
automatic mixing. This option is
only useful or usable when the
rhythm matching feature with
automatic mixing is activated. When
rhythm matching with
automatic mixing is enabled,
the program will attempt to blend your
songs with
rhythm matching. Well,
during automatic mixing,
if you reset the
pitch afterward,
the program will try to
slowly increase or decrease the pitch to return to a
neutral state between songs.
This way, you won't
always have to stay at the same
tempo (BPM). As for
rhythm harmony, we have already discussed that
.
Obviously, this will
cause the program to try to
synchronize the tempo of your tracks
during automatic mixing.
Of course, if you want
to use this
function, it’s best to
make sure your songs are
within a tempo speed range of
about plus or
minus 10%. It is clear that
our layer lock is
really good, it features a
high-quality time extension. Therefore, you
can usually go
slightly over the range. I mean,
our layer lock
will look great even at
20%. So, use
slow
pitch reset. All
this means is that when you
click the reset button
on any of the
sliders, instead of
jumping immediately to
neutral or zero, it will
slowly return to zero.
If you want to
gradually return the tempo speed to
neutral or the
normal speed of the
track, you will leave this
option enabled. Remember the
history record, and that
clearly means your records.
One thing that is unique in Dex 3
compared to Dex 2 is that
all your files in the
logs will be dated.
So you can see the
songs you
played on that
particular day. We will continue to
improve that. Perhaps we should add
some
sub-tabs for each date
instead of a continuous record with
dates. Remember the
audio equalization settings for the songs.
That's great too.
If you changed the
equalizer (EQ) for a particular song
, perhaps the audio distribution wasn't
good, or perhaps the
recording or quality of the song
wasn't optimal.
If you set the
equalizer with this
option enabled, every time
you
reload the song, the
equalizer will automatically be set
to that setting. Therefore,
the program will
automatically remember any changes you
made to the
audio equalizer for this track.
Use
automatic cognitive gain. It is
best to activate this
option. This is
essentially automatic earning.
It will normalize the
output of your songs. They will
all operate within a few
decibels of each other
. This is based on what
we call automatic
perceptual gain because it is based
on how people perceive
sound level.
Basically, it's a
very good algorithm. It ensures that
all your music plays
within a few decibels
of each other. Disable
automatic inclusion in the
queue. You don't
need to enable this
option, but
basically when it is enabled,
PCDJ Dex 3 will try to
find the best point
to start mixing at the beginning of
the song, which may not
always be the actual beginning. You can also
set the first "Q" point
on all your tracks
as the point for automixing
or only when the track is loaded
to the "deck".
So you can set
point Q1, and if
this option is not selected, the
Q position you set will be used as the
start of
the song during
automix or when loading
the track to the deck. Some may wish
to deselect
this option, especially if
they want to set point Q1 as the
first start or as the
starting point of the song. Whether
it's the first sound or the
first pulse,
it's up to you. "
High quality time
stretching" is an option you may want to
enable if it is not
enabled by default.
Our "key lock" feature and time extension are
very good. It's a
custom algorithm. Therefore, you
will want to activate this
option. What this means
is the ability to change
the rhythm of the song without
affecting the
basic pitch.
All of that will remain unchanged
. These options are
also somewhat self-explanatory
. You have an "
automix fade time". This is the
time it takes to
fade from one song to the
next. 6 seconds is the
default time, and it gives a
good fade. You may not
need to modify that
at all. This is
actually a new feature
as well. Set the
track runtime for
automatic mixing. Frankly, it was
designed for those
who only want to
mix a certain amount or who
want to play each
song for a
certain amount of time. That is, if you
set it to three minutes
and 30 seconds, for
example, after every
three minutes and 30 seconds
of the track, the program will switch
to the
other surface for blending. So
instead of waiting until the
end to mix, it
mixes based on
elapsed time rather
than remaining time. So
after 3 minutes and 30 seconds
of each track, it will be
blended into the
other song. Of course, if
your track is shorter than 3
minutes and 30 seconds,
it will simply use the end of
the song. Therefore,
this feature is very useful for
DJs who work in
clubs and the like.
The "
tempo pitch range" is exactly
what its name suggests. It
allows you to adjust the range of the
volume layer slider
. You can start from 4%.
Up to 50%. I believe the
default value
here is 16%. This only changes
the amount or range of
tone speed control
you have on each playback device.
It adjusts this for all
four operating systems. Cut filter,
low frequencies,
high frequencies.
You can change the
filter knob to be
high frequencies only, both,
or low frequencies only.
All of that is editable
from here. Now, the
pitch changer, this is
mainly for karaoke
, although if
you are interested in
harmonic mixing and
pitch mixing, this is
also useful of course. It
allows you to adjust it in
semitones. You can do a
full half step, which is a
complete step in
karaoke, or a half
step, or a quarter step.
This simply means that
every time you click the
tone change buttons on
any of the playback devices, the
adjustment will be made by this
amount. Is it a half
tone, a whole tone, a half, a
quarter tone, or a
mixing curve? You can basically
adjust this. The
sharp curves are somewhat similar
, if you are a DJ who is an expert
at "scratch", you probably
use a controller where the
dimmer controls
our software. You may want a
quick and vigorous mix. A
finely blended mixture will result in a
longer blend. If you
do a lot of merging
, you might like this
option. Although I
find the
normal state to be good for
almost everything. So you can
adjust that to your liking as
well. Now the
next tab in
Preferences and Options
is the Sound tab.
Here you configure
your sound card
. now. Depending on
your sound card, it's
clear that the DEX3 is designed
to work with professional sound cards
or
DJ consoles that have
built-in sound cards.
Most of them do that
these days. DEX 3 supports
Azio and Core Audio technologies. These are
simply higher-
quality, professional drivers
. Core Audio is integrated into the
Mac OSX operating system. While
Azio is usually built-in,
or the driver
is what comes with some of these
professional cards
and DJ controllers,
some of them
also support WDM or Waspie
built into Windows
by default. Normally, when
you open the program, or
rather when Dex
3 opens, it will open
using
your built-in audio device, which is the
case here. Therefore, you can
choose Azio for your
different devices. In my case,
I will use the internal card for
testing purposes. Ah, this
device is not equipped with a
traditional professional sound card, and I am not
connected to any controller
at the moment. But
what happens when you choose ASIO
is that instead of
getting one output,
as is the case when
using "Direct Sound" or an
integrated sound card
where you
only get one output. You can play
the audio in
mono mode. You can split
that small plug output into two
single channels.
Although I highly recommend
investing in a
professional sound card or a
DJ controller that has
one built in. We
support 65
DJ controllers. So you really have a
lot of options.
Just visit the
DJ controllers page on
our website under the
DJ software dropdown menu
to see them all.
But just to clarify that for
you. Currently, I don't have this
option with this sound card
, but the way it works
will be as follows. You
choose the sound card
and driver software. Typically
, if it's a
Windows-based device,
the name of your sound card will be displayed
. You need to
look for ASIO in the
Windows system. On
Mac computers, the ASIO name will not appear
. It will only show you the
device name. When
choosing an ASIO with a card that
has two
stereo outputs, so that
you have a listening channel and a
master output, or run two
separate channels to a
mixer, you will be able to
choose outputs 1 and 2 for
platform A, outputs 3
and 4 for platform B, and so on.
Of course, when doing
this, platform A and B,
learn, A on 1 and 2, B on 3
and 4, platform C you can
put on 1 and 2, and
platform D on 3 and 4. If your
sound card
has two
stereo outputs,
this is probably the way
you would prefer. Then,
for
headphones, select "none".
Which of these options is "
none" or "no sound"?
Input guidance. The
only time you should be
concerned about
input routing is if you are
using timecode control
. We currently work with
Torque and Misspey records,
but you can usually set
these to "no" or
"no sound". Unless you
use
timecode control. So
again, if you're
using an ASIO and want to
use an external mixing device
, an actual "DJ mixer,"
you would select
outputs 1 and 2 for platform A
, outputs 3 and 4 for platform
B, outputs 1 and 2 for platform
C,
and outputs 3 and 4 for platform
D. You can leave the
sampler and microphone on
1 and 2, the headphones on
"None," and the
peripherals on "No
Sound." But you also need to
make sure this
option is selected. You must
check this box
to disable the crossfader volume dimmers
if you are
in external mixer mode
. This is in case you are
connecting an
external mixer. If you do
n't want to use an
external mixer and
only want to use the
built-in mixer, perhaps
using one output from
your sound card for the
cue channel, or perhaps
you have a
DJ controller that
mixes internally,
the way you would do
this is, instead of 1,
2, 3, and 4, you would put the
A-D drivers
all on outputs 1
and 2. The headphones would then be routed
to 3 and 4.
Thus, each headphone routing would be assigned to
its respective output, and each
main audio output would be on
outputs 1 and 2. Now,
if you have two
sound cards, the
only time we recommend
using two
separate sound cards is if
you are using the
built-in mixer. There are many
synchronization problems.
For example,
one sound card might perform
better than
another. Because of this, you may
encounter some problems
using some of the
built-in functions such as
beat sync,
beat grid, and the
like. Therefore, it is
highly recommended to use a
professional sound card if you are
using an
external multi-
channel mixer. If you are
using a
built-in mixer, you can use just two
cards. If you wish to do so
, you will choose your
first card from here.
You select that card, i.e., your
embedded card,
and leave it exactly as it is
. 1 and 2 for drivers A to
D. The headphones will be left
in "none" mode because
that built-in sound card does not
have
stereo outputs. From here you will select
your other sound card
, which is the
secondary sound card. So,
what happens next?
Of course, you don't want to
enable the option to disable the
crossfader volume controls, in order to use
internal mixing mode.
This is only if you are
using an
external mixer. If this
option is selected, your
second card will send that channel to the headphones whenever you
press any of the
headphone Cue buttons in the
software interface, and
will use your
built-in card or the
first card as the main output, and the
second card as the
headphone channel.
Now, the third thing,
and of course something to
note as well when
using Azio versus
using the integrated sound card
, is that you can
greatly reduce latency.
Sometimes you have to
do this through the
control panel with the
integrated card.
Sometimes you can
do this manually
by moving this bar
from left to right.
Most AIO or Core Audio programs
can be played at speeds as low
as 6 milliseconds, and
sometimes even less. It
really depends on the speed of
your computer and its
response time. All that
means is the time
spent interacting
with the program.
If you press run,
how long does it take for the
program to respond?
Therefore, it is clear that with
response time, the
lower the response time, the better, and the
more responsive the program becomes
. However,
it puts a greater load
on your
device's CPU.
Therefore, depending on
your computer
and its performance, you may
sometimes have to adjust the
response time slightly,
up or down.
Right now, under control, I don't have
any controllers
connected, but if I did
, Dex 3 would
display them at startup.
Essentially, Dex 3 will search
for any connected controller
upon startup. So, if
you have a MIDI controller that
we support, one of the
65, again, check out the
DJ software list on
our website pcdj.com. Look for
DJ controllers within
that list. Click
on it. It will show you all the
consoles
we support, most of which
have links
to watch them
online, so you can take a look
. But
simply put, what happens is
that if you have any
of the
supported controllers connected when you
run Dex 3, it will find them
and start working immediately
. However, if it is a
controller that we do not support, it will still
detect it upon startup.
But here's the
key difference. If it is a
controller that we support with a
zero configuration, the
program will find it
and start working immediately. The
only thing you might
need to configure is the
audio channels within the
preferences for that
specific device. So,
if it's a console with two
stereo outputs,
most of the time it uses the two-
output
stereo setup with an external mixer
that I explained. If a
controller is performing
internal mixing, it
sometimes uses a
headphone setup.
So, we'll talk more about
that in another video. But
for a controller that we do not
natively support, i.e., that is, it is
not
pre-programmed by us,
you can program it yourself.
So, what will happen is that Dex3
will detect the controller
on startup, and then
using this learning feature
, I will quickly show you
. Click on "Learn"
at the top. When you press
Learn, you will clearly see
that each small function on the
screen will have a
small blue line around it. And now,
this will also happen under a "2D
" interface. So, once
you want to assign a button,
to move the power button, to
your controller
, that's all you have to do
. Press the power button
on the screen. You will notice a
red line appearing around it, then
press the corresponding button
on the controller you
want to assign it to.
Obviously,
if it's a power button, you'll
probably assign it to the
power button. So,
for the sake of clarity, I will
only press the number
three key. Now, when
you move the mouse over it,
you can also set the
keyboard in this
way. Of course,
all keyboard commands can be set
using the
"learn" function.
Since I don't
currently have a controller connected,
I will simply press the
power button and then the
three key on the
keyboard. Now, if
you exit "learning" mode
and upload a clip to
platform "A" here. If
you press the three key
on the keyboard,
it will turn on. Now
one thing is clear, I have to
learn my
own things here. I'll show you right
here. Key
three will play your
song. So again, I'll show you
quickly. I will set "Q"
to power on. You know I
made three to
run. I'll make two
for "Q". So you can hover your
mouse over it. It will tell you
the shortcut you have
assigned to it. It will tell you which
key is being used.
Click on "Learn"
again. Press three
to turn on. Press two
for "Q". You can simply
repeat that process for any
knob, button, or
slider, and set everything up
whether it's your DJ controller
or your keyboard.
Good. That's pretty much it
regarding the
general introduction to the
Dex 3 video. As I said,
keep following our
YouTube channel.
I will be releasing a series of
videos, perhaps a
few
per week, to cover each
component of the
program in greater depth.
But I hope that will be
enough for you to start
using the brand new PCDJ Dex 3 software
and start
mixing right away. Thanks.
