Closed Caption:
hey what's up everyone john here from
testprepinsight.com and today i'm going
to be reviewing the language learning
program and app from mondly i'll cover
pricing how the monthly program is
structured what the lessons are all
about and of course what i like and what
i don't like so if you keep an open mind
and stick with me to the end this video
should be everything you need to figure
out whether mondly is the right choice
for you to learn a new language so if
you're ready let's get to it
okay welcome back i should mention up
front here that since i'll just be
focusing on the big ticket items in this
video if you find you need more detail
at any point you can always check out
our full detailed written review on our
website an easy way to get there is just
to google test prep insight monday
review that's the quickest and easiest
way
okay so let's kick this review off with
pricing and subscription options modley
covers over 40 languages and they do
offer a free version but it is very very
limited i'll cover this topic in more
detail in a minute but honestly the free
account is more like a trial version
than anything else so most people do opt
for the premium plan instead which
unlocks all of the monthly content and
features this costs ten dollars per
month if you go the month to month route
or around 48 dollars per year if you
want to pay up for 12 months in advance
making it just around four dollars per
month so overall very affordable monthly
is cheaper than competitors like
pimsleur and risotto stone by a pretty
decent margin and just a heads up that
sometimes motley does run special deals
and promotions so be sure to check below
for coupon codes i'll do my best to keep
that description down there updated with
any current discount codes they seem to
have deals going pretty regularly and by
the way if i could say we work really
hard to produce honest and helpful
content all totally free so if monthly
does end up being the right choice for
you we'd really appreciate it if you
would use those links listed down below
in the description that's how you can
support our channel and allow us to keep
creating these types of helpful videos
and if it turns out that monthly isn't a
great match for you it's no problem at
all i just want to make sure you get
matched up with the right language
learning app and we have a ton of other
helpful reviews that you can check out
okay so now that we've covered pricing
let's talk about how the monle program
is structured and what their lessons are
all about and i'm primarily talking
about the standard monthly app and
desktop program i'll talk about their
specialized ar and vr apps in detail
here in a minute so to start once you
sign up log in choose your target
language etc you'll arrive at the main
dashboard which looks like a map and on
this map you'll notice there are a bunch
of landmarks which each represent
different topics and courses to give you
a taste some of the topics include
weather travel and family and within
each topic or course there are usually
six to eight lessons then in addition to
all those different topics to choose
from monle also provides a daily lesson
which is really the heart of the
curriculum and if you complete all your
daily lessons you then unlock a weekly
quiz and if you complete all your weekly
quizzes then you unlock a monthly
challenge you can maybe see where i'm
going with this monthly is big on
consistency and streaks and that's
really how the monley program is
structured from a high level so let's
dive into what the lessons themselves
are actually like each one only takes
about five to ten minutes to complete
and the best way to describe the format
is that they're basically a mix between
rosetta stone duolingo and babel each
lesson is made up of a dozen or so quick
hit interactive drills and exercises
that span listening reading writing and
speaking these include matching phrases
to images which are very similar to
rosetta stone listening to words and
phrases in your target language and then
repeating them
spelling words and phrases translating
sentences from both english to your
target language and then vice versa
listening to a question and then
selecting the right multiple choice
answer and completing mock conversations
by selecting the correct response those
are really the primary exercises that
you'll complete just in different
variations and i know i covered that
pretty quickly so if you want to see
some examples of these various monthly
drills and exercises be sure to check
out that full review that i mentioned
i'll have it linked down below in the
description i have screenshots and
examples over there so you can get a
feel for what to expect
alright so now that i've covered pricing
and subscription options and you know
what the lessons are all about let's get
into what i like and what i don't like
about mondly after thoroughly testing
this program so let's start with the
things that i like first good news and
for me the number one thing has to be
price i know i already mentioned this a
minute ago so i won't harp on it but
mondly is very affordable especially
compared to other language learning apps
out there again be sure to check the
description below for discounts
number two i like that the lessons are
short and engaging they go by super
quick this is great for working
professionals busy parents and students
not everyone out there has a spare hour
every day to complete lessons sometimes
15 or 20 minutes is all you have so it's
nice that you can knock out a couple
lessons a day in a short time frame and
still feel like you're making progress
all right number three i like that
motley tries to gamify the language
learning experience and make it kind of
fun the main dashboard is like an
interactive map which is pretty cool you
can track your stats at all times and
really dig into what you've already
learned through a neat interactive brain
tool
also as you complete lessons and drills
you earn points and there's a
leaderboard where you can keep track of
your streaks and compare your
performance against friends and other
monthly users to keep yourself motivated
and keep things kind of fun
okay number four while we're on the
topic of gamifying the language learning
experience this is really where modley
differentiates themselves from
competitors monlee is sort of considered
a pioneer in the digital language
learning landscape and that's because in
addition to the standard app and
language courses montley also offers
virtual reality and augmented reality
learning apps as well which are designed
to complement their standard lessons the
monthly vr app is a virtual immersion
tool that places you in simulated
environments you'll be immersed in all
kinds of situations that require you to
speak to locals whether you're grocery
shopping booking flights or ordering
food in a restaurant the goal of the app
is to stimulate real situations with
native speakers whether you're checking
into a hotel in mexico city or making a
new friend on a train as you travel to
paris
the vr app is a one-time purchase that
costs around five dollars but
unfortunately here's the big catch you
need an oculus headset as well
now if you don't have an oculus headset
monday also offers their ar app which is
free as long as you sign up for a
premium account the ar app takes a scan
of your room and then uses augmented
reality technology to generate a cgi
teacher and animations right in your own
office kitchen or whatever room you're
in for example if you're learning about
foods the teacher will show you
animations of bread bagels apples and
bananas they'll also provide you some
tips and insights along the way and then
have you practice using the words and
sentences and you can interact with the
animations and even get up and walk
around and get a 360 degree view it's
pretty cool overall i found the vr and
ar apps to be a nice change of pace from
the standard lessons they're definitely
not meant to serve as a standalone
language program and they're by no means
a substitute for real-life interactions
but overall i found them to be a nice
complementary tool for pronunciation and
conversational practice plus it's just
cool to add in some clever tech to
diversify your language lessons and keep
you engaged
alright so last up here number five i
like that motley teaches you truly
useful vocabulary and phrases the
material you learn consists of words and
phrases that you're actually likely to
use in real world situations which is
something i can't say for a lot of other
language learning programs out there for
example you'll learn things like i need
to buy a ticket or where is the bathroom
plus motley even offers job-specific
courses and lessons which can be super
helpful for working professionals for
example motley offers courses directly
related to marketing negotiations
customer service finance and a lot more
okay so let's switch sides now to the
things that i don't like about molly but
before i get to that i should mention
that every single month here at test
prep insight we give away a free
language learning course to one lucky
person it's super simple to enter
everyone is eligible i'll put all the
details down below in the description
it'll take you less than 10 seconds to
enter and hey you never know you could
win a free monthly premium plan
all right so negative number one here
the free version is very limited you're
essentially just gonna get one
vocabulary builder six lessons in one
mock conversation
like i said earlier the free version
should really just be looked at as a
free trial and monley's speech
recognition tool isn't even available
with the free account either so there's
no way to have your pronunciation
checked which means you'll likely want
to upgrade to the premium version from
the get-go
okay number two monthly isn't great for
developing your conversational skills
the mock conversation exercises and the
company's chatbot lessons really aren't
that advanced you'll essentially just be
asked to listen to and then repeat
phrases and words in a vacuum
now the company's ar and vr lessons on
the other hand are a little better in
this regard but at the end of the day
the tech is still pretty limited and the
simulated conversations are fairly basic
i think the audio lessons and
conversational practice exercises from
pimsleur and rocket languages are much
much better so if you're looking for top
shelf audio based lessons and
conversational practice be sure to check
out rocket and pimpler i'll go ahead and
drop links down to both of those in the
description below alright so number
three the monley program is limited when
it comes to grammar instruction they
just don't provide much detail and the
explanations are pretty thin
really all you get is that when you
click on a verb you can see a list of
its conjugations but for some languages
with complex grammatical principles like
finnish for example you really need more
than that
okay number four monthly is not great
for intermediate to advanced learners in
fact the beginner intermediate and
advanced levels don't seem to be that
much different from one another even
when you get to the advanced levels the
lessons are sort of basic they only
focus on present and past tense and
don't progress towards the more
difficult future or past imperfect
tenses
right last up here number five i know
this might be nitpicky but every time
you go to speak you have to hold down
the microphone button the entire time
which can become annoying with other
language apps out there the speech check
will either automatically record your
voice or you only have to click the
button once and then the tech will
automatically stop once you're finished
speaking it's a small gripe but it is
annoying
okay that about does it for this review
i hope you found it helpful all in all
there's a lot to like about manly the
premium version is really affordable
their lessons are short and engaging
their job specific courses can be super
useful for working professionals i like
how they try to gamify the language
learning experience and their vr and ar
apps are truly innovative but like most
language programs there are a handful of
disadvantages as well for example monley
doesn't focus on grammar principles and
the lessons don't really seem to advance
beyond the basics
ultimately i think the bottom line is
that mondly is a solid all-around
program it's not my favorite language
app i do give babel and pimsleur
slightly higher ratings but at the end
of the day i do think modley is an
effective option and should work well
for most folks
and that's all i have for you i hope
this video has been helpful and you
learned a little something if so make
