don’t actually protect your computer? Bitdefender
Total Security has been a favourite for years,
but is it all hype, or is it a plan that
truly delivers next-level protection?
Let’s find out if this security suite
is worth your trust… and your money.
In this video, I’ll break down the pros, cons,
and everything in between of Bitdefender Total
Security. I’ll be considering how
good it is at dealing with malware,
the features you get, and how easy it
is to use, and, of course, we’ll compare
what you're getting with Total Security to
other antivirus plans. And spoiler alert,
there’s this one feature that almost
became a big dealbreaker for me.
By the way, you can get up to 50%
off on your next antivirus purchase
if you use the special links I have
added in the description box below.
Let’s start with what Bitdefender
Total Security gets right.
With Bitdefender Total Security, you get the best
real-time protection available against viruses,
ransomware, phishing attacks, and even
advanced threats like zero-day exploits.
In AV-Test’s evaluations from December
2024, Bitdefender was able to detect and
remove 100 percent of malware that the computer
was exposed to. And it’s not just a one-off;
Bitdefender consistently ranks among
the top-rated antivirus products year
after year. But real protection isn’t all you get,
You’ve got autopilot*, a robust firewall,
anti-fraud, crypto mining protection, and more.
Another great thing about Bitdefender is how
easy it is on your CPU. Security is important,
and so is performance. In fact, I’d
go as far as to say that they’re
equally important because imagine you’re
working on this really important project,
you’ve got like 40 Chrome tabs open. Then
your antivirus kicks in, making your computer
completely unusable. That’s probably going to make
you disable the antivirus, putting your computer
at the exact same risk as if you weren't using
an antivirus in the first place. That’s why a
lightweight, efficient antivirus, which runs
seamlessly in the background, is so crucial.
Bitdefender takes this seriously and offers
a solution to this problem in the form of
profiles that tweak the antivirus’s CPU usage
based on what you’re using your computer for,
whether it’s gaming, going through emails,
or just watching a movie. You don’t even
need to change from one profile to the next
manually; there's an option for Bitdefender
to automatically detect what you’re doing
and then switch to an appropriate profile.
And it’s not just profiles. Bitdefender usually
only uses about 45-50 percent
of the CPU during full scans.
One other thing about Bitdefender's total
security that’s easy to take for granted is
its multi-platform coverage. It is able to work
seamlessly across all major platforms. And I say
it’s easy to take for granted because Bitdefender
has some plans that are only available on Windows,
so if you’re a person working with a
tablet, a Macbook, or someone juggling
multiple smartphones for whatever completely
legitimate reason, you should probably get the
Total Security plan since ensures that
all your devices are equally protected.
Bitdefender also caters to those tech-savvy
users among us and throws a ton of advanced
features at you in addition to all the good
stuff I’ve already talked about; there’s a VPN,
a password manager, parental controls that
help parents protect their children online,
an anti-Tracker browser extension that
helps protect your privacy by blocking
data collection while browsing and features
like Safe Online Banking and Advanced Threat
Defense give enhanced security for people
who engage in sensitive activities online.
Even with all these features, Bitdefender
somehow manages to keep its interface
clean and easy to navigate. Finding tools and
customizing settings is very straightforward,
even if you’re not a big tech person, making
it accessible for users of all skill levels
and ensuring you can get the most out of its
capabilities without feeling overwhelmed.
So, we’ve had a stellar performance so far,
but as much as I want this to be the perfect
antivirus plan, no product is perfect.
Let’s take a closer look at its downsides.
The total security plan comes with a free VPN
for no extra cost, which sounds great until
you realize that there’s a 200-megabyte limit
every single day. This is quite disappointing,
as 200 megabytes is hardly sufficient for even
light browsing. Honestly, it feels more like
a trial than a feature. If you want unlimited
VPN, you’ll need to upgrade to the Bitdefender
Premium Security plan, which also includes
priority support and expanded coverage. But
you might actually be better off just paying
for a standalone VPN. Plus, I’ve added a link
in the description that you can use to get a
great discount on our top-rated VPN service.
Another slightly problematic thing with total
security is feature overlap. While Bitdefender
offers a variety of features, some might
overlap with existing tools you already use.
Bitdefender’s parental controls and operating
system-level tools like Apple’s Screen Time or
Microsoft’s Family Safety serve similar purposes
and could potentially interfere with each other.
The next not-so-great thing about
Bitdefender is the big disparity
of features available between platforms,
especially Mac and Windows. For example,
optimization tools and crypto-mining
protection are absent from the Mac version,
and the Windows version doesn’t have safe files.
While the core protection remains strong, this
might feel like a letdown if you’re expecting
identical functionality across platforms.
As for price, Bitdefender Total Security
costs $49.99 for the first year, which
is a very attractive discount, but then you
get slapped with a $109.99 bill after a year,
and that can catch some people off guard, so
don’t forget to always read the renewal terms.
Other Bitdefender plans cost a bit more, like the
Bitdefender Premium Security plan, which is $69.99
for the first year and a $129.99 renewal plan.
It offers unlimited VPN and priority support.
Other similarly featured antivirus plans
like Kaspersky Premium and l Premium cost
$32.99 and $49.99, respectively.
Still, Bitdefender’s current deal
gives you up to 50% off if you use our
special link in the description below.
Whether you’re going for Total Security or
the Premium plan, don’t miss that discount.
So, is Bitdefender Total Security
worth your investment? Well,
yes, as long as you don't plan on
using their VPN anyway. If you do,
then you’re better off spending some extra
bucks on Bitdefender Premium Security.
But the pros completely outweigh the
cons, and the price might be steep,
but the peace of mind that comes with
this product is worth every single penny.
