Export DWG/DXF 3D Point Coordinates to xyz - plot into SWX Via Excel Macro

In this video Solidtec.com.au Applications Engineer Perry Klinger shows you a new method of extracting 3D reference points from a DWG or DXF via a third party application called Dxf2xyz (note other software is available that can do this process also) to an .xyz file which can be opened in MS Note pad. Then by copying the coordinates to a macro based excel document we can plot the 3D points back into a SolidWorks part.

hi this is perry from solitary and in
this short video I'm going to be showing
you a method of how you can export the
3d point coordinates from a DWG or dxf
file so first off arm have some
third-party application here which you
can download from the internet warm the
link is in description below
alternatively there are the software out
there that does a similar method as well
and simply what we want to do is just
being able to import the dxf we WG that
has our points in there and we're going
to export out based on the points to an
Xyz file which we can then just open up
in text and go from there
so first off just have this file which
is cool w me . DWG and click on here
what we have one first look at using the
DX f 2 x y&z software is just the
filtering options so if we can just
click on entities we want to make sure
that we're looking at the points for
this instance rather than any other the
selection criteria they're going to
worry about layers pens or anything like
that
the next thing is just the output format
so in this program there is a some
different output formats that we can
choose here's a decimal places and so
forth for our coordinates was going to
select raw data output and go OK and
then the last thing to do is simply save
as or say about the dummy . d . sorry
WXYZ and file and set out if it doesn't
convert correctly it will come up with
low error message you can see down here
at successfully converted that out so
just having a look at in our folder here
we've got that XYZ and file if you got
scanner 3d insults premium you can open
that up directly through inside solar
works otherwise we need to open this up
and just choose the required program
which is just going to be a notepad it's
going to bring up the open with dialog
box choose notepad and go okay and what
we get here is simply all the x y&z and
all the points i was 12 points in here
so we can see there's the equally 12
through here and then you've got your x
y&z locations or coordinate so he's
going to copy this another thing that we
need to use to be able to get these
corners inside of solidworks is a nice
little macro that has been placed into
an extra spreadsheet and this was
actually previously shown by another
application engineer solitary cost an
arm and using this x y&z path macro
we're going to reuse this again and just
paste in all this information now what
you probably might see is that all of
the information gets put into one single
Single soaks so you can see through here
it's not spread out so we need to do is
just separate these based on the
newcomers going to drop down to buy in
XO go across to the data tab and go and
text to columns and just select that
whole section through here text to
columns on the limited next and we want
to go comma-separated and next and
finish and that's going to place it out
like we see there which is not an easy
next thing we want to do is open up a
new part in solidworks get already once
we've got that open we can bring up the
ex or spreadsheet and we got some
methods of running these macros spring
macros here so the first one we want to
use i guess in this in this instance if
you want to see all the three points
from that DWG just go plot points you
can see selects in the background as
plugging all those points in their 3d
location and specs and now if we're
going to use the plot segments and the
plot curve options these other two
macros we're going to need to specify
what they say is time and these are just
saying which points come 1st 2nd 3rd and
so forth so for instance if these are in
order you want to make sure that these
are all in order so that flows nicely so
just getting started
one two and three in here and select all
of this we can just drag this down just
to give us some values now that these
are in here we can easily go
Plus segments and it's always going to
plot the like line segments based on
those valleys in the time fields
same goes for the plot cove and that's
just going to be following the same
method as you can see here is placing
the curve with all these points as well
i hope this helps with getting required
