How to Import Google Maps Directions (Routes) to Garmin Basecamp
We look at how to take Google Maps turn by turn directions or route and import that into Garmin Basecamp where you can then transfer to your garmin device.
Many, especially motorcycle riders use this method to build their riding routes.
Now with the new version of google maps, certain features got moved around, and if you are logged into your google account, you should be able to see MY SAVED MAPS when clicking on the mao search bar.
Now if you don't it, then you can simple go to http://mapengine.google.com where we will end up anyway. What we need to do is create a directions map using map engine.
Click on the ADD DIRECTIONS button and start to enter in the left column box, the way points or addresses you want to map along your route. Google map will start to create the turn by turn directions.
Once done, you can click on the FOLDER icon and select EXPORT TO KML.
We want to export the directions we've just created. Once the file has been downloaded to our computer, we can now switch to GARMIN BASECAMP and import the KML file into our collection.

Now you should see the track and waypoints. From this point, you should be able to work with the data; create routes from the track or waypoints and transfer the data to your Garmin device.

yeah
in this video we'll take a look at how
to take a google map direction
turn-by-turn and import that into garmin
basecamp where we can transfer that to
our Garmin unit
so now with the new google maps certain
features kind of got moved around a bit
here but let's click over at the search
bar and if you're logged into your
Google account you should see something
called my custom maps if you've ever
created
roots before so what we're going to do
here is we're going to plan a route
we're going to create a new map and
we're going to plan our day here so if
you don't have that link simply go to
map
engine google.com and bring it to the
same spot here we're going to click on
the add directions button and we're
going to start creating our route as we
normally would by adding waypoints or
addresses and we'll build the route from
there
so first we're going to enter here we're
going to meet our group at a grocery
store here in downtown so we're going to
select that our second location here
we're going to choose
let's see a rest stop gas station about
40 minutes away and we'll add a third
way . on our trip
now once you have your route setup
you'll see that the map will be updating
itself and you can flip over and and
play with your options and take a look
at the finer details but we're going to
click over to the folder icon and go to
export to kml you're going to choose the
direction that we just created and will
click on that and will click on download
and that will download the file to your
computer
we're going to flip over to garmin
basecamp i'm going to import a KML file
into our base camp so we're just going
to go and choose that import the file
now you may want to experiment how many
points you want to create your route in
google maps here i just created three
you can see that it imported the track
from here we can just convert that to a
root or whatever you're used to at this
point and also created the way points
that we've added to our . so if you want
you can just transfer the waypoints if
you have the appropriate maps you can do
it that way
and there you have it
is our custom work out with her weight
training we can do the workouts that
will actually start the workout or can
view the details to review
