Coral propagation -- Episode 1: Propagating the rose bubble tip anemone RBTA

http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/fraggin... In our first episode of the coral propagation series we going to show how to propagate the RBTA rose bubbletip anemone rather than an actual coral. This can not only be a profitable endeavor but you can also help reduce reliance on wild caught anemones and reduction of clownfish habitat. It is possible to use your saltwater reef aquarium to do this at home.

today on brstv we are starting a new
series on propagation in this first
episode we're going to discuss
propagating rose bubble tip and enemies
this is not only a really cool project
as you can make a few bucks but you also
get to reduce the amount of an enemies
that are ripped out of the wild
most of which will probably die on the
way here I'd wager that less than one in
ten actually make the trip from being
ripped off the ocean floor put in a
bucket on the beach all day then shipped
halfway around the world to a wholesaler
then shipped again to your local fish
store
finally making a trip to your house
luckily there's another way
so one of the ways that these bubble tip
and enemies naturally propagate is by
simply tearing themselves in half
essentially taking one an enemy and turn
it into two in fact on some really large
and enemies I've actually seen them tear
themselves into five or six and enemies
in one night
however if we wait for this to happen
naturally sometimes it can be a pretty
long way
so what we're going to do is mainly
divide them right down the center using
a razor blade
as you can imagine this could be a
pretty profitable endeavor sense in most
markets they retail for about 90 bucks
and often you can actually split them
about once a month
that means if one became 22 became 44
became eight and so on
you had the facilities to actually do
this and no fatalities inside of 10
months you could actually be producing
500 and enemies a month
do the math on that now it's unlikely
that you would actually produce that
many because your local fish store is
probably can't support that kind of
volume
however it can still be a pretty
profitable endeavor and its really
possible for you alone to be responsible
for completely removing the reliance on
wild-caught bubble tip and enemies in
your community generally speaking most
fish store owners are also eager to
purchase captive propagated and enemies
from reliable local vendors because the
enemy is already adjusted to life in the
aquarium and the longest trip is going
to take it from the propagation tank to
the fish store
rather than that nightmare trip I
described earlier that means that the
mortality rates for the store as well as
their customers are going to be
extremely low
so this is how this is going to work I'm
going to take this an enemy out of the
tank i'll put it on a really nice flat
surface and then use this razor blade to
divide it in half through the mouth
now some people might be thinking that
it'd be better if we just let this
naturally split in half and in most
cases i would probably agree anything
natural is probably a better way to go
however we're not only trying to make a
few bucks here we're also trying to
remove the reliance on wild-caught
bubble tip and enemies
keep in mind that for everyone that we
can produce in captivity that could say
future demand of up to 10 or more
and on top of that we're not removing
the clown fish is habitat which protects
them from predators
so we have our enemy a nice flat surface
and a razor blade
now it's important that we do have a
nice flat surface because i want proper
contact between the razor blade and the
surface to make sure that we are
actually slicing all the way through and
I do have a couple of tips on this one
is we want to make sure that the razor
blade is actually doing the work and
we're slicing through
we're not crushing it and pushing it
down which will obviously create a
bigger room than we want
we also don't want to slice it back and
forth and actually saw all the way
through
sometimes that's a little unavoidable
but we want to try to make one smooth
movement which is a single wound on the
way through
so here we go I'm going to take the
enemy out of its bucket
we'll set it down on the glass here to
spread out the tentacles a little bit so
I can see what I'm doing and I'm going
to want to make sure that I get it
through the mouth
so here we go
we now have tuned in enemies and we
should get them back into the water as
quickly as possible
it will probably only take about 30
minutes for them to close up and look
like too small and enemies again so i
put the enemies back in the tank
please forgive all of the debris I
stirred up by accident
this is just about 60 seconds after
dividing them and you can see they've
already almost closed up on the wound
the rest of this is a time lapse of the
next 15 minutes you can see they're
fully closed up now and the wound is
barely visible basically look like too
small and enemies now
so another thing i want to go over real
quick is the system that you used to
take care of the enemies now i'm using a
glass aquarium but really you can use
any reef safe container doesn't have to
be anything fancy
i'm using t5 lighting because it's
pretty versatile and relatively
inexpensive for flow i'm using a mac
siege at 1,200 with a rotating hide or
water deflector it gets flow around the
entire aquarium
you can also notice that we are using
the pre filter on the bottom of the max
jet this is really important in an enemy
tank because we don't want the enemy to
quality into the intake of the pump
which happens almost all the time if you
don't have a pre-filter on there so the
next thing you need to add some type of
bacterial filtration to the tank
we want to avoid anything as a bunch of
pumps hanging in the tank or anything
where be hard to remove the enemies from
i chose this simple marine pure ceramic
bio media block
it's much bigger than you probably need
for a tank like this but I had a spare
one laying around
you can probably get away with the thin
plate that they make
I like this for an enemy tank because
it's simple
it doesn't have any pumps required for
it it has a proper surface area and if
an enemy attaches to it it's really easy
to remove them from it
other than that I just want to make sure
that we don't put anything the tank that
doesn't absolutely have to be in there
because I want to make sure that we can
remove the end
enemies really easily when we want to
that about sums up our first episode of
the propagation series in the next
episode we're going to propagate some
zoo anthems and social tips on how to do
that
you want to make sure you're notified
when that comes up subscribe to our
YouTube channel or newsletter

Bubble Tip Anemones - What you need to know
Bubble Tip Anemones - What you need to know

Discussing the various needs of this species of anemones should help you keep one (or more) healthy in your reef for many years to come. The original BTA was purchased back in 2002 and is with me to this day, and the original Rose BTA was acquired in 2007. I've seen all the fun things they do, including splitting, spawning, climbing everywhere - and of course hosting happy clownfish around the clock.
