How to Fit Chords Into a Key (Music Theory)

Starting to get into chord progressions here. Learn about how to figure out the different chords you can use when playing in a key.

You can find the video on basic chord theory here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Y01jI...

hello everybody I thought today we can
start talking about chord progressions
we've finally arrived at this point we
can start putting things together
did a video on basic course and talked
about all the the basic order set up and
i did a little video on keys a little
introduction to how he's kind of work
and those are the two sort of building
blocks that we need to start fitting
courts together bringing together these
chord progressions our one chord kind of
flows into the next we actually start
kind of constructing music this way
so the whole reason why we need to start
talking about chord progressions on the
wrong as their own subject is that you
can't just take a bunch of course and
kind of stick them together and play one
after another and hope that it works
it'd be a little bit like taking a whole
bunch of random words and string them
together
you can't really expect any kind of
sentence that makes sense
you have to kind of think about the
bigger picture how everything else fits
within that sort of bigger idea of a
sentence and you need a noun and a verb
and that sort of stuff
same with music course don't just sort
of magically work to go you have to sort
of set them up in a way that makes sense
so to do that we're going to start by
looking at a key again for a minute here
if you remember a key had the seven
notes and it is a certain pattern to
figure them out and we'll start with the
key of D major again so he made you
remember starting on D and you have
three notes in a row that are all
separated by bolster so these three
right there and then right next to that
you started 4th know
you have four more nights in a row for
more notes in a row they are all
separated by a whole step 2 so
free right there
those are seven now here's a really
simple concept
the very first note of this key d if we
wanted to we could take this note and we
could use it to start building a chord
we could do some kind of D chord and
we're not exactly sure what kind of
course it needs to be yet maybe it's a d
major D minor or something like that but
some kind of décor ought to fit because
we know that d is in this key
so starting here is a good place to
start same with no number two we could
start on number two which is e we could
build some kind of E chord and there's
got to be some kind of E chord that will
fit with this key because we know that E
is one of the notes in this key so we
can build in the accord starting off of
number one of the chord starting off of
node number two or number three all the
way up now we know that
d will turn into a chord we can use so
will I II but d sharp will not remember
d sharp is not in the key of D which is
what we're kind of looking at these
three
so we can expect any kind of d sharp
chord to fit with this key
so what that means that are basically
seven different chords that we can build
that are all going to fit within this
key we could do the D chord chord F
sharp a B or C sharp
every one of those is one starting on
one of the notes in this key and the
instead of calling them by their sort of
proper names that are saying d major or
a minor whatever they turn out to be
just say cord one or two or three
this is not number one in the key this
is number two number three so the course
will kind of get their names from that
we started building a quarter off on
number three
we'll just call it our three court thing
that makes sense
so all we really need to know is what
kind of course should actually be if we
do a décor doesn't need to be a D major
chord a minor chord be diminished or
whatever else I need to figure out what
kind of cord is going to fit within this
key so we start guessing say okay we
know that some kind of décor is going
to work here it's going to fit our key
let's try and D minor if you look at the
notes in a d minor remember the way to
figure out a minor chord is you have
your route now go up a whole step and a
half step and two whole steps that gives
you your a minor
if you look at the three notes on this D
minor chord this now
this doesn't belong in our key remember
the d major key
these three of those four we never had
an F natural this D minor chord
it's an ice core but it doesn't belong
in this key because this middle node
isn't one of the seven were supposed to
be working but if we did this instead
hey daddy major chord all three of these
notes fit within our key very nicely so
that makes us think that ok
a D major chord is important that can
fit within a d-major key we go through
each chord that way we can figure all of
them that we knew that an e can turn
into some kind of cord that works if we
tried any major chord can see that this
note doesn't actually fit in this key we
never had a g-sharp in this key but
doing any minor chord
all three of these fit very nicely so
that means so far for playing music in
the key of D major
we could do a D major chord we can also
do any minor chord those two
should work together they should fit
within this key
now we can go through every single
corner to keep this way we can start on
number three build our three quarters
figure out what notes are actually going
to fit it should talk to this minor
we can do our four chord starts right
here on gene that should turn into a
g-major remember all the key
all the notes just have to belong to the
key we can do a chord in major and go
all the way through and figure all these
are not going to show you each one
because even though you could sit here
and work out what all the different
chords are that fit within this key
it's much much easier and more practical
to just kind of memorize them just learn
which which ones are supposed to be what
you learned that your one chord should
be a major chord or five court should be
a major chord or three courts should be
a minor chord that sort of stuff because
every single key you do
they're going to be the same if we're in
the key of D major
if we take our one chord we just worked
out that is going to be a manager but if
we were in the key of G major
here's G major make our one chord that
should also be a major or if we did the
key of E major our one chord to be a
jerk or they're going to stay the same
for every different to you do some of
the same key
we're talking about major things from it
so learning which one is which means
that you're going to know what all the
different keys are so here's a simple
way to remember it in a major key from
your one chord your four chord in your
five for those are your major courts
would say again major key chords 145
should be major so that means right off
the bat
if you know what notes from your key you
could play for number one is a major
chord for number four is a major chord
for number five is a major chord and
those three
those three off to fit within this key
to work with each other
ok so remember those 3145 are major
chords for number seven want to jump to
that one core number seven is going to
turn into a diminished chord because it
didn't work through that this one the
only type of core we can get to actually
fit is going to be this C sharp
diminished
we started with 47 wanting to diminish
for and try to do a little minor chord
you wind up with the G sharp and that
doesn't fit our key or so but residents
the difference
so just remember 47 should be a
diminished chord so 1 45 or major 7 is
diminished and then the rest the other
three are courts two three and six for
we two three and six should be minor so
1 45 or major 7 is diminish the rest of
minor the simplest way I can think of to
remember that if you can keep that
straight if you can remember that you
know which ones are which
and any key you do as long as you know
what the notes are the key
you should be will come up with seven
different chords that all belong to that
key
now let me show you how to do this for a
minor key and then we'll go ahead and
wrap this up
remember the pattern for a minor key
let's do a F minor this time pattern for
a minor key is
two notes and then three notes so
post up apart apart
now that the minor key follows the same
principles
you have seven notes to choose from you
can turn each one of them into a chord
but the difference is that since the
arrangement of the key is different
yourchords you're going to kind of turn
into different things for example your
your one chord in a major key this would
be a major chord but in a minor key that
will work because if you try to do a
major chord this middle note here
doesn't belong to the key anymore
because we change the arrangement of all
the notes
so in the case of a minor key you're one
coordinates three minor chord and you
could work through each one the same way
but I was going to tell you what all the
work out to be
hopefully you can remember it there's
actually a pretty similar arrangement of
chords in the minor key in the major key
in a major key
your one chord your for court in your
five chord for all major chords in a
minor key
your one chord for cord and five quarter
all minor chords so they are kind of the
same set up that way
so remember that you've got most of it
already now in a major key your core
number seven is a diminished chord in a
minor key its core number two
so remember major key seven is
diminished minor key to is diminished
and then the rest you can just kind of
fill in the blanks
you know in a minor key of 145 or minor
to is diminished all the rest of our
major that means corner for three
quarter over 6 and corn / 7 are major
chords same in a major key remember that
one for five major 7 is your diminished
everything else is might both keys have
three major chords three minor chords
and diminished
hopefully all that sits right but that's
pretty much all there is to figuring out
what what quarter in each key
you have seven to choose from remember
what the arrangement
and if you forget you can always just
work out what I just showed you but
hopefully can keep that in your head and
then it's really easy to find different
courts in different keys
so I'm going to leave it at that for
today but we haven't talked about yet is
how to do a little more with those cords
showing you how to figure out the the
cords and say the key of D
here's your one chord to chord for bored
like bored and you could actually just
play a few and these start play around
and go from one to the next and get a
feel for what sounds right but you won't
hear a lot of music it just kind of
plugs down one chord about that mother
you're going to be applying patterns
maybe
show you this last time sort of
repeating the pattern
kind of moving in from one to the next
door whatever you can start fitting
melodies on top and a lot of times you
actually take these cores and kind of
flip them around and reorder the notes
to get them to really kind of move
smoothly from one to the next
that's something called in versions
which I'll get to release soon but to
start with just work through what i just
showed you that seven chords in each key
get used to what they sound like how to
figure them out see if you can memorize
what's what and you should be in a
really pretty good position to start
really turning us into music
so that's it for today thanks for
watching and I will see you very soon

UPDATE: Hello, this is Present Day Michael. I would like to point out that Past Michael chose his words poorly when he said "this chord doesn't work", and that statement has led to much anger and confusion throughout the eons (well since 2011 anyway).
