Understanding chord progression theory using the number system - (part 1)

Worshipwoodshed lesson on chord progression theory. This video also shows you how to incorporate the number system so that you can start playing using numbers in addition to reading chord charts.
Closed Caption:

in this video I'm going to teach you how
the chord progression theory and how the
number system all kind of work together
and so before you watch this you'll
definitely want to see the lesson on the
major scale and the numbers somehow that
relate because it's basically built off
of that
so let me put up the musical alphabet
here
ok there it is the 12 notes
so not only do the numbers in the number
system 1 through 7 represent notes but
when you're talking about in the context
of chords
there's a few things you have to
memorize and understand
so let me go over these with you so the
first thing is this okay
and the number system there is chords
ranging from 1 through 7 k chords 14 and
5 are by default major chords chords to
three and six are by default minor
chords so since these are the default
when you see 145 as a chord
those are going to be major chords - 36
are going to be minor chords
there's no need to put a little m after
three or six or two because you just
have to learn that - 36 or minor and
that's kind of difference between like
the nashville number system versus kind
of a number system we use here since
these are by default that way we don't
even indicate it with a little am number
seven which is hardly ever you
used in a chord
they're used as a base note but is
what's called a diminished diminished
chord so this is kind of how it works
once you understand how to convert a
chord chart into numbers by using the
the major scale so let's say we're in
the key of a
where the key is a this would be the
root root chord which is also the number
one chord then you create the you know
tho whole whole half whole whole half
which will give you one here he will be
2 which will be B minor three would be C
sharp or D flat which would be either C
sharp minor or dish
d flat minor for would be D if you're
wondering how i'm getting these
you got to watch the the lesson on the
major scale in number system 5 is e 6 is
f sharp or G flat 7 is G sharp or a flat
and back to half would take you right
back to the root which is number one
so through this here are the chords
using chord progression theory in the
number system so
one equals a major 2 equals B minor
remember because two three and six or
minor by default 3 equals either C sharp
or D flat you can call it either one
technically you know musical fear you
know
majors might get all over you but who do
care is really all your care
are you really care about is the
location of that note 3 would be C sharp
minor for would be D major five would be
e
now for this lesson we're just going to
call it a major because we're only
talking about three note chords six
would be F sharp or G flat once again
you can call it either one we're going
to call this one F sharp minor 7 would
be G sharp or a flat will call it G
sharp diminished
ok now what you need to know is this
represents chords
it doesn't represent if you had a slash
court let's say / cord that said 1 / 3
would be on a over 3 which would be a
see sharp or D flat but because the /
represents only a note not a cord it
wouldn't be a c-sharp minor or D flat
minor
because the cord is only on the left
side of this / or the top and the right
side is just a bass note so it bc
sharp and if you want to know more about
that watch the lesson on slash chords
and i'll show you but that's basically
how the chord progression works using
the number system

UPDATE: Hello, this is Present Day Michael. I would like to point out that Past Michael chose his words poorly when he said "this chord doesn't work", and that statement has led to much anger and confusion throughout the eons (well since 2011 anyway). What he SHOULD have said was "by moving notes closer together than a minor third or farther apart than a major third, you're creating an entirely new chord that you're almost definitely not expecting, and you should watch this video ...

FL Studio: Chord Progressions + A Little Theory (Basic - Part 1)

Going to upload slightly shorter videos more regularly in between of the longer ones (which takes a lot of preparation). Hopefully this helps the beginners stay in tune when making unique chord progressions and basslines. Do this first and add a melody on top and you're set really. However you should make the progression about 8-16 bars long if you can, instead of a repetitive 4 bars. Next one will be more complex (hopefully!) and i might be contradicting what I said in this video ...
