FL Studio: Chord Progressions + A Little Theory (Basic - Part 1)

FL Studio: Chord Progressions + A Little Theory (Basic - Part 1)

Going to upload slightly shorter videos more regularly in between of the longer ones (which takes a lot of preparation). Hopefully this helps the beginners stay in tune when making unique chord progressions and basslines. Do this first and add a melody on top and you're set really. However you should make the progression about 8-16 bars long if you can, instead of a repetitive 4 bars.

Next one will be more complex (hopefully!) and i might be contradicting what I said in this video a little bit.

hey guys so this is going to be a chord
progression tutorials can be a little
bit shorter since i'm going to try to
make short of tutorials but I don't know
different parts it's going to be more
specific and stuff like that i can
upload more frequently hopefully because
of this change but i am still going to
make longer tutorials
this is going to be how to make chord
progressions teaching about chords a
little bit of theory in there
this is the major shape major chord
shape this is C major and I know this
because quite naturally this root note
which is sort of the note below the two
other ones is C and then I don't know
just listening to it it's it's that sort
of major sound so if I just keep on
doing that
and by the way i got this little like
cord thing from the court section down
here and I just went into major so I'm
just going to none
now so that I can just place down every
individual notes but basically just
copying and pasting this and i'm just
writing out the c major scale
ok so all of these root notes down here
the ones that are the lowest note if you
will and this doesn't necessarily always
count for cat like identifying a cord or
what court it is but looking at the root
note is a good way of at least trying to
figure out what cord
you're looking at so the root notes here
c d e f g a b and then see again so you
know the sea on the next octave
it's that Doremi Faso lucido idea scale
whatever you want to call it C major and
the relative scale the corresponding
scale or whatever you want to call it is
a minor and it's basically I mean the
way you know this is just because like a
miner has in simpler terms it just has
it just uses the the white keys so it
doesn't have a sharps or flats or
anything like that and its exact same
thing for
C major ok so that's that's that's all
you need to know
major sound - sounds if you're in c
major you want to have like a minor sort
of chord progression then just use a
monitor and it won't you won't have to
change types of scale that you're using
all right so these are all major shape
so every time you hear the court is
going to be a major chord
yeah
but unfortunately during the scales or
whatever that doesn't that's not how it
works so we're going to take the two
major chords here d and e in the c major
scale
this is supposed to be a minor so we're
just going to flatten the middle notes
here F and G that's fine that can be
major and the exact same thing here
going to flatten down the be the seventh
of the scale so it's like the the last
note of the scale basically it's it's
kind of an awkward note but it's a a
diminished chord pretty ugly
not necessarily how you would use it but
i'll try to i'll try to make a chord
progression that kinda uses that court
as well
so if you want to make a chord
progression
just pull out any of these chords and
then just start putting them in a
sequence in a rhythm not
I don't know that you guys like
basically and then you know that that's
how it works i mean if you guys know how
scales work or how to like stay in tune
it's just finding that scale that you
want to use and then just using the
notes in that school you don't have to
worry too much about any other note on
the keyboard
so in this case C major or a minor
you just won't have to worry about and
the sharps and flats like the or or if
you're playing piano
it's quite common that you'll just use
the white keys when you're starting off
on your first year just because it's
easier for your hands and everything
i'm beginner so you don't have to worry
about the the black keys and I know I'm
going to get racist comments for that
one but heck I mean I don't know it is
easier so I don't know what they're just
they're just keys
guys it's no problem so to make your
chord progression just refer off of this
okay and just cut honestly you could
just pick random chords and then put
them down for like a random amount of
time
well maybe not random but literally just
place them somewheres in the grid
ok and I'm just copying facing all these
different chords and I'm just putting
them out so you guys to get one
what I'm doing here it's not going to
sound good every time a lot of the times
it will sound sort of unnatural but it's
just I'm trying to show you that you can
well I'm just trying to show you how
scales work basically and I think people
don't wrap their heads around like this
simple thing that is just like don't you
not use the cords or the other the notes
in the scale just use the ones that are
here so that's all I did just pull them
out made them into this random shit
progression and I guess we'll just
listen to it
starting the G note the G chord here g
major for us
for being in SC major scale is a bit
weird
it'll sound sort of summary summer three
maybe I know don't you worry child
starts or not and it has like that
well I guess you'll hear it but as you
listen to the scale you'll want to
progress in a certain way quite
naturally but as you just so i can I did
it randomly I don't think it's going to
sound very nice but I did line it up so
that the F chord here that would then
link up and loop to the G so hopefully
it will work
I mean honestly I'm not gonna like this
chord progression actually would work in
like an actual song
so that's that's literally all it is and
it's not even that basically like I
think you could actually use this
what is basic those the fact that these
are all three note chords are brilliant
what I do know
yeah I met I i would come on
yeah so I just got interrupted there but
these are ya these three note chords
right
and many messages about that now and do
what you do is you just to make this
more complex more
oh no I almost want to say intellectual
you want you want to make it so that you
have more notes than just the basic
minor and major chords right and and
that will help you actually get like a
melody or an actual sort of lead chord
progression that you can use that
doesn't necessarily have to have an
actual melody
okay so obviously the notes the note
lengths and the rhythm is very very very
simple here but honest I think that's
going to be fine so G the G chord is G B
and D and that's the major chord
ok so if you want to add more notes you
could just add those notes again
ok so that's pretty much fine or you can
change it
so if you're wanting to add different
notes to the cord just use the notes in
the scale
so in other words just don't use the
black notes basically like that's
honestly as simple as it gets in the c
major or a minor scale if you're in a
completely different scale then that
would be different because here we have
in b-flat I mean that's that would be
replacing the G chord
you know it's the same structure but
it's different keys that you're actually
using we're not going to worry too much
about that though so if you're a
beginner and you have kind of a musical
ear i would say just keep switching
around the notes until you find
something that you like that sounds good
so that's where the whole practice
experimental part comes in so just keep
on practicing it really until you find
the cords that work
so but some people just complain that
they don't know which cord too bloody or
which note to bloody use or which keys
to the press or experiment with I'm
telling you just just use the white keys
if you're in C major and a minor I keep
repeating that just so you guys
understand it but in this particular
case just keep hitting a minor
sorry ed white keys basically
so you can literally just do this
now here is kind of like you have to
switch it a bit because we're in a minor
chord a minor I find since the cord is a
C and E
I find G usually sounds good on top of
that like this and you can add another
see daddy
maybe the d hear what kind of like I
don't know
transition in from the g
and then we got the unicenter the tonal
cord here which is the c.c being the key
that were in you know a lot of people
think that they should start their song
on C the C chord just because we're
there in the c major scale and that's
not necessarily true it'll I mean we
started with the G chord that doesn't
mean we're not in c major you know you
know I mean what really determines what
Kieran is sort of all the notes in this
scale that are that are present in the
chord progression
I mean that is one way to tell or just
knowing what the tonal note is which in
this case again see and that would be
the key
yeah
now this is kind of an interesting cord
the the D minor here
I can't really get into why it's
interesting with words just because most
of what I know these chords are through
and experimenting with them but i find
it seems very much more often than it
then it was maybe in electronic music
especially house and trance and things
like that and it's just the cord that
corresponds to the second note of the
scale which is d in this case and then
finally the g major F major chord which
I really like myself and C major scale
which is basically the perfect fourth of
the scale and I don't know I find for
some reason it's just
just a nice chord basically and you
don't have to leave like the you know
the bottom
let's say structure or form of the court
like the way it is i mean you could
bring the a and bring it up here and I
mean we can have the scene and bring it
up or whatever you don't have to have it
as like this this little structure you
know i'm just doing it that way so you
so it's more simple I guess
now we can change the rhythm of the way
the cords are being played so it might
sound a little bit more on a realistic
I had less like a robot will make it
more offbeat i guess for
chances are in a real mix like situation
using sense and stuff like this i'm
probably hitting . i'm probably use way
too many notes at the same time we have
white like seven notes here a little bit
too much but I mean it's just to give
you the the the idea or get you guys to
wrap your head around like just just use
the notes in the scale and use the
chords that i showed you here
I didn't do that thing where you kind of
switch keys while building the chord
progression and it is just a four bar
loop but I want this to be so the
starting part 1 sort of video and i'll
probably do that in the next one and
yeah so hopefully this was helpful to
you guys and you could use this to make
chords maybe you guys should refer off
of what I just made here
see how I did it maybe i can give you
guys the flp it's pretty simple but
that's how you kind of make chord
progression sort of in a more
experimental way of course i could have
showed your chord progressions that are
most commonly used an ATM but that just
would suck because well that's common
and then no one kind of gets anywhere in
your you're probably just gonna sound
like people who have already made
anyway let's just not do that basically
I'm just going to give you the cords and
you guys can build that way the way I
did and yeah that's basically it
my only recommendation is don't start
with the added that be diminished I mean
the 7th note is always a little bit
awkward like that so just don't even
worry about that one but any other cord
you can pretty much start this along
with and if you have a musical ear it
should be quite easy for you to get like
a decent chord progression going
cool hope you guys enjoyed the tutorial
and that that's basically going to be it
for today

UPDATE: Hello, this is Present Day Michael. I would like to point out that Past Michael chose his words poorly when he said "this chord doesn't work", and that statement has led to much anger and confusion throughout the eons (well since 2011 anyway).
