How to Hide and Encrypt Files and Folders on Mac OS X Snow Leopard
Closed Caption:
LOL this is what's up to 90 here and
today i'm gonna show you how to
completely secure or and crypt with your
mac OSX hard drive as well as your
backup drive now we're going to be doing
this with the program called fire vault
there's no program you need to download
this comes automatically installed on
max what you want to do is open is going
to system preferences click on security
and privacy and click on the one that
fire fault before you can turn it on you
have to click on this block right here
which was to a and typing your admin
password to be able to access it and
then I'm but this will basically program
basically does is and cribs your hard
drive and makes it impossible for
anybody who has maybe stolen your laptop
or maybe you left your laptop or your
backup drive somewhere or I don't know
baby you can't lost it or something
whatever that situation maybe this will
keep anybody from seeing your personal
files as long as they they don't have
your password so will the guess I'm just
going to go ahead and try and
interesting questions you might have and
get those out there the answers some
questions will depend on the technical
specification to your computer so i
asked for whether or not this will slow
your computer down it may if you don't
have very much processing power but you
only notice it like a little bit if you
have decent processors like four
gigabyte processor you can check on how
much processing power your computer has
by got us going to apple and clicking on
about this mac so we're going to turn on
fireball now and here's the key if you
want if you want you
well actually not if you want you should
you need to definitely want to write
this key down because if you do if you
don't have if you fight forget the
password to your computer or something
and you don't have this key you're
you're done you have you will lose
everything you have to like a racer hard
drive and lose all your files and
it's not fun so definitely write this
down
ok I'm just going to take a screenshot
of it right now i might see if I can
change this later then click continue
you can shoot for the recovery key with
apple in that case if you forget it or
lose it whatever you can basically take
it into the apple store and they can
pull it up for you or you don't have to
if you choose to just store the recovery
key with Apple sorry my screen recording
software glitch stop for a second there
i'll show you you will have to just have
to set up security questions and all
that so I'm just gonna choose not to
store it in which case only you know the
password
obviously and click continue and this
will start the encryption process
I'm one thing i should mention is that
this will basically make recovery HD
completely useless you still be able to
get into recovery HD but you base it
because I the fart fireball doesn't
block recovery HD in the way that and
keychain password does but you basically
won't be able to like repair the you
won't be basically won't be able to like
get it still won't be able to get access
to a hard drive and stuff so there you
go
let's click continue and I'm going to
need to restart the computer now so I'm
going to pause the video while I do that
yes so as you can see the encryption
process is started and that saying it's
going to take 22 hours on my laptop I'm
gonna pop them up and make you watch the
whole thing or using the video when it
started I just thought i'd show you what
you should be seeing right now roughly a
pause the video again now pick up when
it's done already
see so encrypting and 5 volts on and now
my hard drives encrypted i'm going to
show you how to encrypt your backup
Drive you're gonna want to go to add
your timesheet kind of time machine
backups going to work a bit different
from now on I'm going to back up all the
computers in sleep mode
um really show you how to encrypt your
backup so sorry open time machine
preferences and go to options
turn this off for now and select this
select with your in the name your disk
index click on encrypt backup singer
click use disk let's create a backup
password time machine we use the backup
password to encrypt backup disk if you
get the backup password won't be able to
restore any data from the back of this
so yeah you don't like this part
password down somewhere and for some
disgusted 72 my username little and you
guys going and click and crashed disc
and you'll get this option
I mean this progress lord
so yeah it's now encrypting your backup
disk so obviously again this is gonna
take a while
I'm not going to sit here with you guys
watch this someone to pause the video
till it's done right on the right track
so once that's done you're finished i'm
gonna show you kind of how to turn
encryption off now now for time machine
I don't have my disc plugged in the
moment but what you would do is just if
you just go into your back of this
options and once you do select the
increased backup option backup option
and i would decrypt it and i'll show you
how to turn fireball off as well which
one and correct your hard drive and we
do is go fire vault type in your name
and password here and click on turn off
firebolt then you have to click OK and
that will decrypt your hard drive as
well so that's about it for this video
hope you hope you guys enjoyed hat leave
a like subscribe and this is have a nice
day
this is what's up to 90 and I am signing
off
