Crop Sensors vs Full Frame :: Crop Or Crap?
Let's get a few things out of the way ::
I have said, in the past, that you should move toward full frame sensors. I have always championed full frame sensors. At the end of the day, full frame sensors beat APS sized and smaller sensors.
The whole reason I bought an original x100 was because it had the largest sensor I could find in a small camera. It had been a number of years since I had shot an APS crop frame sensor. The last APS camera I shot professionally was the Nikon D200. I replaced that with a Nikon D3 (full frame) and then moved on to the Canon 5d2, (also full frame.) From the time I retired my D200 to using the x100 on jobs was about four years. When I bought that little x100 I had ZERO desire to change to a new camera system. I sure as hell was NOT going to switch from a full frame camera to an APS camera. Full frame cameras are better. Right?
If I have ruffled your feathers, as these topics usually tend to do, please read my entire blog post about this topic before you fire something off at me. I go more in depth there.

yeah
hey everybody that Carey is here with a
dead pixel . com
a lot of people have said to me is a you
know Zach if if only it was full frame
if it was a full frame sensor
why I probably considered going to that
fuji camera but you know what it's an
aps-c sized sensor and that's a crop
factor you know what I just don't want
to give up the quality of a full-frame
sensor
let's talk about let's take a walk down
memory lane and we don't have to take a
very long walk
because i want to talk about film sizes
and formats and all of that in
relationship to photography and a bit of
the history of photography and the
shoulders that we stand on now I'm not
an old timer i would say i'm a mid timer
I'm not a young whippersnapper any
longer but I'm also not joe mcnally so
let's talk about this back in the days
of film which was not that long ago we
had 35 millimeter we had medium format
we also had large format for x 5 8 by 10
there was 5 by 7 11 x 14 on and on
now back in the day when we were all
shooting film medium format was the
daily king of shooting
if you are a photographer worth your
salt you were shooting medium format
you know why you shot medium format
because 35 millimeter was too small so
here we have ourselves a piece of 35
millimeter film 35 millimeter film
now we go up from there - 6:45 medium
format and get this 6 45 which is what
the
this beast here is based off of a lot of
photographers didn't shoot 6 45 why
because it was too small
it was sometimes referred to as the 35
millimeter of medium format know a lot
of photographers were shooting six by
seven
now six by seven now that is a good
healthy size of format that that is your
sensor right there check this out that 6
x 7 is larger than a GoPro now a lot of
photographers didn't even shoot medium
format they were shooting large format
for x 54 inches by 5 inches or if you're
in the UK five by four
there were people still who thought this
4 x 5 was too small
they were shooting 8 x 10 8 by 10
look at this it is anywhere to go Thank
You Bernard right now let me see that
print - mm-hmm sure I'll take that one
to go full frame 8 by 10
this this is the sensor size eight by
ten film holder
now of course this Polaroid film holder
for instant film but this is the sides
of your negative
I find it rather humorous when I see
people starting to argue about
full-frame vs aps-c which this
fuji camera is a PSC this night come
down here
full frame and people start arguing then
I hear people say well I'd consider
switching to fuji if it was full-frame
35-millimeter full-frame pepper
here's a PSC roughly there abouts that's
about micro four thirds right there and
that is what you're watching right now
micro four thirds camera shot this and
this starting to get like point and
shoot and
and smaller iPhone tiny so people think
the aps-c is not as professional or not
is good because it's smaller than full
frame but you've got to understand there
is no one alive on this planet today who
has had a full life long career shooting
DSLR because it hasn't been around long
enough for anyone to have a life long
career shooting DSLR there are
photographers alive today who have had a
full entire career built upon these
larger formats and there are
photographers today we're shooting 8 by
10
still when you shoot a by 10 4 x 5 looks
baby when you shoot for x 56 x 7 is
small when you're shooting six by seven
you don't want to shoot 6 45 and if
you're shooting 645 you sure as hell
don't want to go down to 35 millimeter
and I get it
if you're shooting 35 millimeter full
frame you don't want to go to a PSC but
look
apsc to full frame it's not that big of
a jump
full-frame 267 that is a jump
I find it slightly humorous when I see
people complaining or going back and
forth or arguing or swapping dxo scores
between full-frame 35-millimeter an
aps-c and to me that difference is
negligible negligible negligible all but
those do when the difference here is
negligible now full frame and 67 that's
a big difference
go to 45 go to eight by ten bigger than
your face covers a hose other formats
it's kind of crazy
if you want to talk full frame
let's start talking full frame now yes
you get a little bit more okay with that
larger sensor but not that much from a
PSC - 35 millimeter
not that much you get a little better
iso performance based on your camera
here's something that's happened it's
been really interesting to watch over
the last 10 years tech nology changing
aps-c sensors used to suck and you suck
at high iso and technology got better
and then full-frame sensors came along
and they were better at high iso and we
all said full-frame sensors are better
at high iso guess what's gotten better
small frame sensors at high iso so that
difference between full frame and crop
between iso that difference between full
frame and crop sensor between high iso
is getting much smaller or negligible at
the end of this month
i'm heading to Las Vegas and I'm
shooting the property brothers for HGTV
and I could take a big 35 millimeter
DSLR beast like this or I could take the
fuji xt what I've got to go through the
airport I've got to travel I've got to
take light stuff gear and all of that
and I can do the job with either one of
these cameras and at the end of the day
I need great image quality and I need to
use the best camera for the job
and guess what either one of these will
do the job
guess which one I'm going to use this
one it's sharp
it works great the focus is awesome at
fifty six millimeter one two lenses now
I could use about whatever camera i want
for the job
i'm gonna go in i'm going to travel
light and i'm shooting with fuji why
because it's a professional camera and
it will create professional results some
of you making up crazy you say Zach
you really should use full frame it's
more professional
II negligible and when you put it in
for it
last DSLR full friend cameras
you know what they're awesome they are
fantastic
you know what medium format cameras
amazing great fantastic eight-by-ten
hope of that's what if it'll make a
pee-pee go soft oh gee
awesome you know what I like GoPros
those are cool too
none of these cameras this camera this
camera this camera this camera this
camera
whatever camera whatever can be you on
camera shooting this thing right now
can't see cameras can't see this fuji
has no vision
this phase doesn't know anything about
like this nikon over here knows nothing
about moment the eight by ten is a cold
beast that knows nothing of emotion the
gh4 shooting this video right now
doesn't have any idea about composition
so what's it come down to a tall frame
no at apse know the more on behind the
camera
that's you and me and Bernard and Caleb
you want to get in that fight want to
have that fight you want to maybe and
give me maybe one minute and they me
that there's a bit so they do babe it
really didn't do anything to you
i'm on the internet i got the answers
course
4 x 5 8 x 10 spanks you all good night
you really should take a hit of this car
yeah
yeah
yeah
yeah
ok
ok
ok
yeah
