all right let's dive right in we can see
that we have exchange
server 2007 service pack 1 we can see
that we have
four different databases now was
important to note here that you can only
have
of 5 storage group in Standard Edition
and I'm right on the edge my love it
here I need to make sure that I leave
room
for a fifth storage group which is gonna
be my Recovery Storage Group
that I'm going to use for my recovery up
my database here in the dial tone
demonstration
okay sources dive in and take a look at
what we got here
if I go back over to XP one I'm going to
you
take a look and see when like DNS here
or login is Lucy
and what I'm gonna do is it going to
lockout as Lucy and I'm gonna log in as
a user called
Letha and leases get a third a whole
bunch more messages over here
so if log in as Lisa
and let's get the message is that so we
have something to work with here
and then we can now back up our database
okay saw third out a message to you
Lucy which is the the meeting
starts at
for and also that out
and will say again to Lucy
it is
415
where are you Wilson that out
just get something in there health and
other one more
into Lucy had the median

K looks like something you do more in a
text message in the email but we get the
idea
so I make sure we have the messages
coming in okay in renal login as Lucy
just to make sure that we have you know
those messages
and then at that point we'll have
something we can actually
work with in our backup
okay so we can see
we have the three messages here that
deal with the meeting
the meeting starts at four 450 where are

alright so we're close that out okay now
what we want to do is go back over to
our server here and we're gonna do a
backup and storage group for
okayed the but before we do that we'll
take a look at the
folder structure and we have storage
group
for we have all the log files for the
stores group
in the Rue the folder and then each
database we have its own separate folder
with the database bites of
so let's say that I had five databases
in the storage group
all the log files a good place out here
in the root folder
and the databases will be placed in
their individual for
okay ever gonna go into
rnt backup utility other great thing
about a thaw in exchange
Server 2007 service pack wine is that it
extends the capability at the NT backup
deal edit backup that's torture to run a
backup storage group for
ever going to create a brand new folder
for that
with discrete brain for here at the root
was caught back up

all right that looks good and we can
start that backup
we might want to verify them at the
advanced 13 in all backup looks good for
the earth
you know we will start that back up
so we want to make sure that we have a
backup at the messages
in our actual live database that we're
using before becomes corrupted
and we can see that the backup completed
successfully
we have a live were key database the
database is good everything's fine we
have a backup
up that database which we do on a
regular basis because we're good
Exchange administrators we make sure
that things are backed up okay so
at this point it looks pretty good
okay now what I'd like to do is try to
stimulate some kind of database
corruption
which is hard for me to do we're just
gonna pretend okay we'll pretend that
the database got corrupted
now this database working with this
quite large will say this database is
several gigabytes in size okay
and with that database gets corrupted I
may have no choice but to restore that
there'd be some tape
now it's important to note here the
reason I'm gonna have to restore from
tape
its cuz I don't have another solution I
would recommend
that you have in place and healthy are
at a minimum
or ACC are configuring Asian so it that
database gets corrupted or
hopefully doesn't get to where he did
whatever happens to the database
if we had an LCR a CCR we can simply
point to the path that note in a CCR or
we could
mount that other copy the database in
LCR configuration
be sure to check out my videos on both

okay but if I don't have a healthy R
three CR
in my database got corrupted I'm have no
choice but to restore the entire
database
now the whole point but I'll turn
recovery is that when I go to restore
the database if it is two gig
they could take a while is good take
some time to restore that database
so what do i do in the meantime okay
I can let my uses work with was called a
dial tone
database which is a a database the same
day be them working with
ollie with the database itself deleted
so all other males got
black they can still work they can still
send and receive email
they're not gonna see any existing email
but they can still
work okay now you might want to send out
a warning
emailed everybody telling them that hey
don't freak out
you're connected the Exchange server all
your mails guide
our database you know became corrupted
we're working on restoring the database
that would probably be a good idea are
you my has some very nervous users on
your hand
okay so again the main point is
is that we have to restore the database
from Cape our database is corrupted
and users need to keep on working and
how do we go about doing that
okay so that the whole idea behind the
dial tone recovery
okay so what we're gonna do right now is
take this database is currently mounted
they were going to dismount the database
day by dismantling the database it was
me get back into the file system here
and I'm going to simulate arm
gonna go back down here into the folder
structure and we're going to
I see if we can generate what we need
here for a doubt on recovery
okay now what I'd like to do it take
this database
and I want to move it work cut it into a
temporary folder
3 create a brand new folder
in orders placed that in there now that
is indeed a move
and when I think move that means there
is no longer the original folder
as opposed to a copy damage take the
lock files because I might need these
guys
im gonna copy the lock files
into that same for okay
now the idea of doing this is that I
have
a backup my data base supposedly is
corrupted
maybe my tape is no good maybe I can use
this and call Microsoft and
are you see is futile in to repair on
the database to try to get back
so if I'm really really really stuck in
nothing's working at least I have this
is a
as the thief Denette and that's why I
want to make sure that I kinda
keep hold of these files all right back
