[GALAXY S3 USERS PLEASE READ] UPDATE SEPT 23rd 2012: If you've updated to the latest Samsung Manufacturer ROM, USB drivers for Mac is now BROKEN. Hence, this root method will not work because OS X will not recognize the phone as a mass storage device. Until suitable drivers become available, S3 users will need to go a different route.
[GALAXY S3 USERS PLEASE READ] UPDATE OCT 5th 2012: As the Jelly Bean OTA update (slowly) rolls out to users across the globe, I hope to be able to test USB functionality when it becomes available in my region. If the new firmware fixes it, then the above methods will be applicable to the S3. Stay tuned!
HTC Devices: Please head over to http://htcdev.com/bootloader to download the bootloader unlock software. After that, you may proceed with the rest of the root process according to this video starting at 4:12.

what's up guys it's mackey galaxy here
and welcome to my final installment in
the series on how you can root your
android device on mac OSX first you want
to make sure that you have performed the
first three steps are in this series so
if you've not already done so go on the
links will pop up here and you can also
check out the links in the description
make sure you have step 1 downloaded the
Android SDK platform tools step to
download it
the and write file transfer program and
step three have your custom recovery and
supersu images download it and placed in
the platform tools folder so if you've
already gone and done all of that arm
will jump right into it
the reason for this video is because our
unlike on windows have not found a
all-encompassing easy toolkit to use for
mac OS x step actually works across all
devices so I've want to share your video
on how you can root pretty much any
Android device so this video will be
divided into three parts the first part
involves unlocking your boots are
unlocking your bootloader the second
part involves flashing clockworkmod
recovery and the third is actually
rooting your device by flashing supersu
on it so first up you wanna make sure
that you are in USB debugging mode so go
to your device in this case I have nexus
7 here and make sure that it is
connected to your computer via USB which
I've already hooked my not then go into
settings scroll down to developer
options and if it's not returned on make
sure developer options is turned on and
make sure that you have USB debugging
over here checked
so if you do have that open up a
terminal window and type in c and then
open up your platform tools folder so
you can see you have my platform tools
folder here with armed the custom
recovery image that specific to my
device and also supersu specific to my
device so drag-and-drop platform tools
and press enter and it will take you to
the platform tools folder and this next
step is to ensure that your device
actually connected so glad type dot
slash adb devices enter and you should
see the list of android devices attached
in my case only have one device so if
you don't see any devices
try unplugging and replugging your USB
cable back in the next step is to unlock
the bootloader reboot into the
bootloader first and you'll see this
screen reboot and as you can see my
device is locked
that's what it says down there and
so three to unlock it
type dot slash fast boots
oh um and lock and press enter and then
you have message show up on screen
asking you if you want to if you wish to
actually unlock the bootloader so if you
do go ahead and press the power button
it's already been selected
yes if it's not on yes you can move it
up and down using the volume buttons so
i'm going to move it to yes and press
the power button arm should say that
it's unlocked now as indicated on the
bottom here and with that done we'll
move on to the next step which is to
flash clockworkmod onto it so go ahead
and reboot bootloader again . /a class
loader press Enter
oops
hyphen here so it rebooted it arm once
again make sure that in platform tools
where you have the fastboot and adb
commands in that same folder make sure
that you have to recovery image placed
there that's not gonna work and so i'll
go ahead and flash your recovery is how
you do it you got . /a spewed flash
recovery and then the name of the
recovery and vegetable just a recovery
and you can type tab to autocomplete so
if you only have one filename recovery
will complete that file name for you
then press enter now the recovery image
is flashed reboot into boot loader again
reboot into the bootloader and now that
you have d arm custom recovery flashed
use your volume buttons to select
recovery mode and press the power button
to enter recovery mode
so sweet for it into recovery mode and
there you go
now there's one more thing we need to
kind of tie up which is to make sure
that when we reboot the device again it
doesn't actually overwrite the arm is
actually overwrite the custom recovery
that which is flash so we're going to
want to move the stock recovery until
back into a backup file so first we need
to mount system so go right ahead here
and press let me just show you that
again are going to mount and storage and
then press mount / system now you see
that turn into an unmarked lunch for /
system so don't press it again oreo
unmount system and then go back to
terminal and press type EDB system
oops
/what went around here it is show your
pardon
and then once you're in there you want
to change directory to the system
directory so type CD / system and then
move the old recovery so you can just
tap complete I've already moved it but
what you should really type is that
so should move the old recovery from
boot . p on to recover from . back so
basically what this is doing is renaming
the . p far too . back file so it won't
overwrite your custom recovery
I'm going to get a narrow and I press
ENTER cuz I've already done it but on
you shouldn't get any errors so navigate
back to route by typing CD / then press
call back on your device and press
reboot system now first entry so once
you've rebooted into your device should
see the welcome screen and press that
then is connected wireless you can
choose to set up a system or not I'm not
going to set it up yet
ok so now your unlocked and you have a
custom recovery so next step is to flash
next step is to flash the supersu file
ok so if and write file transfer is not
already open
go ahead and open it up and then open up
your platform tools folder but just to
make sure I want to make sure on in USB
debugging mode again so have the rooting
process probably turn it off so I mean
the to put unlocked bootloader prosper
turn it off and show your tent on again
and drag it over can delete the old one
just pull it over again just to make
sure
ok so that's the correct file size and
proceeded to turn off the device now and
reboot into recovery so power off your
device
then reboot
and then reboot into your device by
holding onto the power and volume up and
down buttons at the same time then
select recovery mode using volume
buttons and click the power button to
enter recovery mode just wait for it to
load up once you're in clockworkmod
recovery go to the second option install
zip from sdcard choose the first option
install zip from card and here you
should see the following is transferred
earlier using android file transfer go
ahead and click on that and click Yes to
confirm this should flash the supersu
and get your route so that's it you are
now rooted and we will go back
reboot the system and do a quick check
to make sure that your device is
actually roots so it's actually read it
you should find a program called
suppress you in your applications drawer
you're right in and
they have it we have superuser arm on a
device
this indicates that the devices root it
so this concludes the series of videos
on how you can root your device on Mac
OS X this is pretty much a foolproof
method that works on all Android devices
so in New of you know in the absence of
a own composition toolkit which we don't
really have right now for the OSX i
think in my opinion this is probably the
best way to go
so like and subscribe if you found this
video helpful and i'll see you next time
