Mac Tip: How to Rip DVD's

Mac Tip: How to Rip DVD's

This is a Mac Tip to basically show you how to take your film from your DVD, and stick it into iTunes! :) Along the way, I show you EVERYTHING you need to know, including how to add all film information and data to your file before it goes into the iTunes.
I hope this helps a few of you out there that were asking for the tutorial.

Here are the links:-

And thanks very much to James! Without him, this video wouldn't have been possible. I borrowed his iSight camera in order to record the audio.

hi everyone this video has been
extremely highly requested so on
that's what I'm going to do it and I
think a lot of you interested in seeing
how i'm actually ripping dvds on my mac
so before I get started I want to get a
huge huge huge massive jumped out to
James just a poor creature of mac is
link to his YouTube channel will be in
the video description
he's making this video possible because
he's let me hear his apple firewire
isight camera in order to capture the
audio for this video
unfortunately i don't have a mic or a
webcam or anything like that
the only thing close to Michael got it's
like stuff upstairs are used for
recording songs and stuff and bring a
lot of gear down a bit of a pain but
anyway he's left me his eyesight which
is fantastic so we're gonna get straight
on to this video I've seen a lot of
videos out there showing you how to do
this and in my opinion they all go into
a little bit of depth
this video's aimed towards people that
don't have a clue about the software
don't have a clue about ripping dvds and
aren't very familiar with formats and
you know all things they don't
understand i'm just going to show you
literally what to click to get your DVD
from the DVD yourself into itunes
assuming this is where you want it
because your Mac anyway i will also show
you something that the other videos
don't and that is how to get what's
called metadata for your DVD and that is
title year of release director/producer
description all that information gets
filled in automatically for you
including the DVD cover so at the end of
it
your dvds will end up looking like this
if you can see I've got the covers for
all of them and I've got also got this
description for each and every film
which is very cool and I've also got a
lot more information and that as well so
it's just generally pretty cool so first
off the two pieces of software that you
will need the first one hand brake this
is to rip your dvds and the second one
is called matter
x it's a bit of a strange application
but i'll show you how to use it and how
to get your data so first things first
let me pop the DVD into my drive i'm
using Dukes of Hazzard which is a great
film which I don't have my mac yet so
let's pop this in one annoying thing
about having the mac pro underneath the
desk is the fact that i have to bend
down to put the dvds in and whatnot but
it's not too much of it too much of a
big deal that goes running great by the
way I absolutely love it
fantastic machine i really really love
it
ok so we're going to do is let the discs
pinup there's a disk and you know your
Mac will automatically open DVD player
and you'll start playing the DVD just
quit that because we don't want that now
then what you want to do is open
handbrake this is assuming that you've
installed the application is just a
simple click and drag from the dmg into
your Applications folder i'll supply a
link in the video description now here's
handbrake and you get prompted with this
dialog box now this is your source
dialog box which means where does it
want to collect the data from in order
to encode hit the DVD in the sidebar
there should be under devices if you've
got your Mac configured you know
standard if not you obviously know where
is you can click it from there
but you just hit in the side bar which
is actually the same place and press
open so why then do is go through what
it calls checking i guess or scanning
and they can see the progress bar
basically the progress bar moves moves
along and it's just checking the DVD
just to see what's going on basically i
guess i don't actually know what is
doing in this process guys are not
expert on any of this stuff but i just
wanted to show you how I do it because
I've done a few tweets about how quickly
my macpro rips dvds compared to the g5
and I wanted everyone to be familiar
with it and it's coming to the end and
it's done
so once it's done all of these options
become available to you
now then the next one you want to go to
his destination if you hit browse it
brings up your standard sort of save
dialog box and this shows you where to
save it now then do not save it in your
itunes folder this would be the logical
thing to do if you wanted the itunes I
guess save on your desktop because the
file that we ripped from this software
is not what will be putting in itunes
because we are running it through this
application as well in order to get all
of the data for the film so your desktop
and that's that's where i'll be by
default now then you can fill with all
this stuff down here if you want if you
know what it's all about but basically
here you have preset used to be a lot
more complicated on the older version
but now that is standard so i always
choose Apple universal ok undone as you
can see it shows you it's anamorphic
that means this widescreen it just gives
you a little brief description down
there of what each thing is but i always
go for a Apple universal now one thing
that I check is audio I check that it's
on the dolby pro logic to and obviously
that I'm getting 5.1 channels of sound
that's because i use these films on my
projector and surround sound setup but i
want it all to be working great and all
that and if you hit a preset that means
everything down here is pretty much set
ready for you to go
so all we have to do guys is literally
press start now this is writing to start
talking about performance if you look
down here this is where your progress
bar is now my g5 this is what i would
call an overnight ask which is basically
a large task which slammed at the cpu
and sort of i wouldn't be able to do and
carry on using my Mac you notice about
the cpu it would take forever and it
would it was just a slow process as you
can see you've already got a little bit
of progress bar showing here and you
know it's going to be done quite soon
considering what you're doing a ripping
your encoding
DVD depending on your Mac this is a mac
pro 8 call 2008 model to be negative 4
gigs around so if you're on a mac pro or
a new imac or even a new mac mini
macbook pro or even one of the newer
macbooks and I don't think this will
take you very long at all
you'll probably get similar speeds to me
but I've done this on the 2006-2007
macbook and yes it's pretty damn slow
and it was slow on the g5 side you can
see that it's good progress and here is
the file and it's creating by the way we
will be attending to that later but
please don't delete that all move it we
want it on the desktop so i'm going to
do now is pause the recording until this
is done and then I'll resume a little
bit later on and I'll show you how to
get the date written with mattracks so
everyone it's done i started it at 20 25
and finished at 525 it took 15 minutes
exactly and the film's a hundred three
minutes long so that's an hour and 43
minutes fairly long film and a very good
ripping time also i was doing other
things just web browsing stuff in the
background the cpu kept to about sort of
that kind of level as you can see it's
sort of topped off in certain sections
but stated about three-quarters kind of
average which is really cool
so the machine is fully usable while I'm
ripping it and I think any new in town
Mac will be just before I carry on guys
so sorry i forgot to mention this but
handbrake I believe does require VLC in
order to function if you don't have us
install a highly recommend you get it
along with something called parian VLC
in parian are two things that I highly
recommend you get for mac if you're into
video stuff that all but if you don't
have the RC installed i think you need
it and when you download handbrake it
should it should prompt you to download
VLC but anyway we're done with handbrake
now by the way for needs a certain piece
each time just you know you can
you can select make default down there
and whatever so let's quit handbrake and
here is the file that that it made so
the file is 1.5 2 gigs which is much
better than just dragging a DVD stone
too hard disk and then playing with LC
or something like that so it's quite
respectable size and it's what you'd
expect from DVD quality so it looks
fairly nice as you can see very crisp
framerate is great it's just like a DVD
is just like watching a DVD so yeah
that's looking great now we're going to
do is show you what to do with it to get
the metadata so open this app called
matter x up the link to this in the
video description as well
now before you do anything the interface
looks quite confusing ignore it
half these buttons up here you won't
even need so the first thing you do is
go to preferences and this is only for
the initial setup and I wanted to move
over to the data tab and check some of
these boxes have it like I've got it set
obviously select your country up here I
tend to get most of my data from tagged
him because that tends to be the one
that works the most and I don't think
that's checked by default so check that
and hit itunes and take this one as well
this is sent to itunes after writing and
basically it does what it says on the
tin is sent into itunes it seems you
importing into itunes so after you do
that here's this application
here's the video file on the desktop
drag this into the farthest left hand
column once you drop it will ask you
what kind of media is have a cancel TV
show music music video and movie does
work for both of these very well as well
but we do in his movie in this
particular video now whatever you've got
it named it will start scanning but
obviously this is too big named it
straight in the disk
south so rename it let me get the DVD
case i get the spelling right so type in
the title of the film it and turn it
will start to search again and as you
can see it getting some results up here
so if you pass the first one you don't
want to just keep passing know if that
pops up you know you really don't want
to do that so here you can see as soon
as I click on that I can see the DVD
cover and the title the artist the date
the rating even though it's you know
underrated I can see the descriptions i
go over into video I can see about the
director and everything so that was
really cool
basically they're all the same but I'm
just gonna go for that one that error
sometimes pops up
it's not our it's just a stupid thing
that pops up you doing too well that so
here's all this information guys
basically what i want you to do now is
press this button appears as toggle
checks all these boxes up here and down
here and then you press right then you
get this little thing comes up and all
it does is it right the rights to data
and now you can see it says sending your
file to itunes so as you can see that
it's finished
all you got to do then is quit now if
you set it to automatically send itunes
that means your file has been copied to
itunes so this file here you can delete
trash it you don't need it
unless you want that file anywhere else
and if you want to recover that file
it's in your iTunes library folder
anyway so itunes now here are my films
and we're going to type in the Dukes of
Hazzard and there it is that is our DVD
that we imported and you can see the
description there and the year and the
genre and if we click on it it plays
perfectly that is how you rip dvds to
your mac and add the matter data i hope
this has been helpful all video all
links are in the video description and
again and
massive thanks to James a block reader
of mac for lending his eyesight to
record the audio his link will also be
in the video description as well so
thanks for watching and if you have any
trouble please either email me you you
get a response quicker that way or
comment the video comment in the comment
section of this video down below so
thanks for watching again guys and I'll
see you in the next video
