BigNate84
MacX DVD Ripper Pro
BigNate84 here with a video review
so this is software that you can run
on the Mac operating system
I would give this product 4 out of 5 stars
so far I have used it to back up about 30
DVDs
and have only run into two minor problems
overall I am pleased with the user experience
and I would recommend it to others
ok so first we'll talk about what I like about
the software
we'll talk about why it's better than HandBrake
and Mac The Ripper
we'll discuss some issues I had with MacX
and get into the specifics
and then we'll do a MacX DVD Ripper Pro walk-thru
and I'll show you an example of how to rip
a DVD
ok so here's what I like about MacX DVD Ripper
Pro
it has easy pre-configured set-up options
for multiple devices
so the end user really doesn't have to experiment
for hours with different bit rates, file sizes
and resolutions
and in the past that has really sucked away
a lot of time
when I've tried to rip DVDs
with other solutions I'm constantly trying
to
navigate between file size and resolution
and finding that happy medium that works for
me
it can be frustrating
MacX DVD Ripper Pro has it all figured out
so you don't
have to mess around too much with resolutions
I also like that it automatically adds album
art to the file
so that was a nice feature
don't make fun of my video library
I have a two year old daughter, promise
so if you are not a tech savvy person
and you just want to get your DVD backed-up
and ripped to a video file
I would definitely recommend this product
ok what about HandBrake and Mac The Ripper?
why would you pay for software like this
when there are free things like
HandBrake and Mac The Ripper available for
download?
free is not always easy
so you may have experimented with these free
downloads
you may have heard of them
I've used both of these in the past
but in my opinion MacX is a much better value
and simpler solution and here are two reasons
why
MacX is a one step user friendly software
solution
that will save you lots of time
not so with Mac The Ripper and HandBrake
I have managed to get Mac The Ripper and
HandBrake working in the past
but there's a little bit of a learning curve
if you go that router
last time I used HandBrake
I ran into some codec compatibility issues
and playback issues and
I ended up wasting a bunch of time
because I didn't want to mess with it
but if your the computer savvy person
that loves all that stuff by all means try
out the freebies
but if your like most people out there
you don't really want to understand the technology
and spend a lot of time trying to figure this
stuff out
if it all seems like it's a foreign language
you just want it to be easy
you want it to work
you might want to consider getting MaxX DVD
Ripper Pro
and you can trust me because
I have a diploma behind me on the wall
and here's the second reason
MacX was able to crack all the difficult
DVD encryptions I threw at it
I was able to rip Star Wars
which last time I tried would not work with
Mac The Ripper or HandBrake
MacX was also able to rip newer Disney movies
like
Tangled and How To Train Your Dragon by DreamWorks
so I thought that was cool
I wasn't sure if it would handle some of the
newer titles
ok lets talk about issues I've had
with MacX DVD Ripper Pro
just to give you guys a frame of reference
I got this product in early December 2013
and right now it is mid January 2014
during that time frame I have only encountered
4 issues
so far with MacX DVD Ripper Pro
even though 2 of the 4 issues I encountered
were really nothing to worry about
and easily fixable, essentially non-issues
I wanted to mention them here in case
maybe the developers are watching
and I also want to give an honest review and
not try
to sugar coat things
so all 4 issues I ran into are able to be
fixed
and the solutions to those issues are also
listed
1 the 2006 DTS demo disc Alive got hung up
to be fair this is kind of a strange DVD to
be ripping
but that's pretty much why I choose it
I wanted to throw some strange stuff at the
software
to see what would happen
I attempted to rip this DTS demo DVD 3 times
and all 3 times the process got stuck in an
infinite loop
in other words the MP4 video file
that was being created never ended
after the last scene in the DVD
the ripping process would start all over
so you'd get 1 video file with multiple instances
of the entire DVD back to back to back
so this would continue until I interrupted
the process
and stopped the program from running
the funny thing is that the software selected
the proper title automatically
it just didn't know when to stop
so I'm kind of wondering now if this happened
because
the DVD was designed to loop
because it's a demo disc
instead of landing back at the main menu upon
finishing
I don't I haven't really looked into that
further
but that was the only disc
that I observed this strange behavior
so the solution to this problem if you do
run into it
the problem was solved with a little video
editing
from another program called
MacX Video Convert Pro
so it was easy to open the lengthy file
and trim it to the proper ending point
so that video file contained one instance
of the entire demo disc
the second issue I ran into
the Madagascar DVD brought up the
Disney encrypted film error dialogue box
and this was interesting because Madagascar
is not a Disney film it's actually DreamWorks
so I don't know if there's an error in the
software
or perhaps DreamWorks is also using some sort
of
Disney encryption technology
not sure but anyway the solution was easy
I proceeded with the rip
I just clicked out of the box and everything
worked fine
after I dismissed the error message
alright issue number 3, Cloudy with a Chance
of Meatballs
that film also brought up the
Disney encrypted film error dialogue box
this was also interesting because
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is again
not a Disney film it's actually Columbia Pictures
in partnership with Sony Animation
so that was also interesting to me
not quite sure what's going there
but again the solution was that I proceeded
with the rip
and everything worked fine
after I dismissed the error message
and here's the 4th issue I have encountered
in about a month and a half of testing the
software
The Holiday, so here's a DVD with Jack Black
and Gwyneth Paltrow I think
but the Holiday DVD was ripped without any
album art
so typically album art is already baked-in
to the file
it automatically downloads the art and put's
it in there
which makes browsing your DVD collection
on your computer much more enjoyable
so automatically adding the album art is a
really nice
software feature and it worked almost 100%
of the time
but not so with The Holiday
to be fair this album art error only happened
once
it was the most significant issue I felt that
I ran into
just because is really no fun if you're just
looking at
blank images or placeholders
you wanna see that nice shiny album art to
give you
visual indication of what you're looking at
so the solution to this was
and I happened to correct it on a PC
I probably should have a Mac solution
but I don't typically use Mac MP3 tag editors
but if you're on a PC you can make this correction
using a free program called MP3 Tag
so I had to do a quick Google search for the
album art
I downloaded it from the internet and then
using
MP3 Tag I baked that picture into the MP4
file
which was a pretty easy process
but it would have been nice if that just worked
so I don't know why that failed
so that's my report on all the issues
thanks for watching I hope you enjoyed this
review
I decided to put the user interface demo in
another video
so go ahead and click this thumbnail here
if you want to see the process of ripping
Mary Poppins
and this will give you a nice demonstration
of how the MacX DVD Ripper Pro user interface
works
and some of the options and features that
come
with that software package
[music]
click ok and you can select the video profile
and in my case I like to do MP4 video using
H.264
