Mac OSX 10.8 - Mountain Lion - Using Dictation (Speech to Text App)

A video demonstration of Dictation, one of the new apps included with Mac OSX10.8 Mountain Lion.

hello this is music tech help guy and
welcome to this video demonstration on
using dictation one of the new apps that
comes with mountain lion the newest
version of mass mac OS x 10.8 it just
came out about a week ago and overall
I've been really impressed with mountain
lions a very stable system very stable
platform and one of my other music
software works just fine with it and
dictation just kind of a cool little
feature comes with now I realize that
most of my videos are generally
music-related and dictation is not
really music related but i suppose if
you're a lyricist you could use it you
can convert lines and lines of text are
lines are lines of handwritten lyrics
into a text document and that's
basically what dictation does you speak
into a microphone and it converts your
speech into text so you no longer have
to type this is probably going to put
the dragon company out of business if
you seen the dragon commercials on TV
this is a very similar thing all right
to set this up the first thing you have
to do is find our system preferences
window if you don't know where that is
you just go to the apple on the upper
left corner go down to system
preferences and you'll get this window
the next thing we need to do is find the
dictation and speech icon it's a new
icon for for mountain lion so you won't
see it there in line or snow leopard
click on that and we need to enable
dictation let's turn that on and next
thing you do is set a shortcut for it
now with the shortcut does is it's a
command key that you type in anytime
you're in any other applications if
you're on Facebook and you want to
enable dictation you would type in the
shortcut and it'll work
the 1i like to use is press either
command key twice so whether I'm in
Microsoft Word or notes or an email or
on facebook i just click in the text box
where I want to speak in the text and
then i'm going to double tap the command
key and I'll be able to enter text via
speech one of the other really cool
things i like that they included in
dictation is the fact that is compatible
with external interfaces are right now
i'm using an alesis or lessee whichever
way you want to pronounce it
io 26
audio interface and I have a
thousand-dollar AKG c 414 microphone
plugged into it and this is really
helpful especially for me because I'd
rather use a high quality mic because
it's probably going to be more accurate
with the speech-to-text transformation
translation if you're using a microphone
like a built-in mic on your Mac or maybe
some sort of a in athens Jack Mike
that's like an Internet talk Mike
probably not going to be as good a
quality and therefore is not going to be
as accurate when translating speech over
to text so use that interface close it
out and all i have to do is I have to
double tap the command key and then I
speak so i'm gonna do is i'm going to
read a couple lines out of a textbook
that I used for one of my classes once
you have an oscillator generating an
audio signal comma as described in
chapter 4 comma there are two things you
can do to make the signal more
interesting or more musically expressive
colon you can add new harmonic content
comma or you can take some of the
existing harmonic content away . and
what I did the stop that is I just hit
the command key one more time so it
looks like everything's great they're
the only thing we have to do is we're
going to make sure that you say all the
punctuation so if there's a comma . a
colon something are ! you can actually
say ! it will put the ! there now one
other thing we should be able to do with
this is we should be able to say new
line and for some reason in microsoft
word for mac it doesn't work I'm not
sure why
however it does work in mountain lions
notes application it seems to work in my
email and it works on facebook as well
so what is a SMS a hello this is music
tech help help guy i'll say new line
hello this is music tech help guy and
you'll see that it creates two lines for
it
hello ! this is music tech help guy .
new line
hello this is music tech help guy .
there you go and i just figured i'd
throw in the ! just to show you that
this is great if you're you know going
down into
stanzas in your your lyrics need to
create a new line every time
alright so i hope this video helped hope
it was enjoyable again dictation got
just a really cool little software the
new app that comes with mountain lion
and probably gonna put the dragon
company out of business unfortunately
but it is what it is so i hope you
enjoyed the video if you did please
