How to create a .pdf using Word 2007

hi this is Jim genesee I've been asked
by more than one person to reveal the
secret of outputting a PDF using word
2007
so in order to do this I've tuned into
word 2007
i'm going to click on this big ornament
at the upper left and i'm going to tune
into a document that i wrote for a class
I don't want to distribute this as a
word document because that would require
the person reading this to have word to
open it instead what I'm going to do is
go up here to the upper left
this is called the office button that
looks like a big ornament if you click
on it you can go down here to save as
and one of your choices will be PDF or
XPS now PDF it's a very standard format
the adobe reader opens it up XPS is
something that Microsoft has invented to
compete with PDFs I suppose I have no
idea what an XPS is and I really don't
care
PDF is just fine because everybody can
open it you may have this but not have
the software that actually creates a PDF
very kindly microsoft has put this place
holder here if you do what i'm going to
do and clicking on this and you don't
have the software you will be prompted
to continue and download it
which will happen automatically and it
will install itself so if you have never
done this before be on a machine hooked
up to the internet so that it can reach
out to microsoft and grab the necessary
software once that happens once you two
will have the ability to create pdfs
will have already done that so I can't
demonstrate that but i am going to click
here on PDF and it asks me where do I
want to put this thing
well I want to put this thing right in
the same place for the word document is
so now i must click the publish
I get this little message if I've
already done this once and that PDF file
already exists
that's fine i'm going to replace it see
the word replace ok yes
now it's going to do that and in just a
few seconds after it finishes the
process of turning this into a PDF
it's then going to fire up the adobe
reader that firing up process accounted
for some of the delay you just saw but
let me expand the reader now I can see
it as a PDF and so as a PDF
it has everything in it the same way the
original dude including these drawings
and illustrations but this now
although text in it can be marked and
copied you can't change it unless you
have some special software which is
rather expensive and most people don't
have that so now i have the PDF file
i'm going to close the original document
and now what I'm going to do here is
take a look in that folder you see here
is the PDF if I sort alphabetically
I can get to look at the original
document and the PDF and in this case
the PDF is smaller in size in addition
to opening up faster and not requiring
word
so this is not really a big deal to do
it used to be a big deal before office
2007 because before office 2007 you need
something extra i use office 2007 output
of a PDF now because it maintains active
hyperlinks
so any links that you put into a
document and then output using office
2007 word 2007 those hyperlinks will
remain active
that's a very good thing because i
actually use office 2007 either
powerpoint 2007 or word 2007 to generate
pages that i just placed on a server
with active hyperlinks in embedded and
for me I don't have to mess around with
HTML anymore that suffice as a web page
and I've been conducting online teaching
using that technique for many many
months now
without even the use of a learning
management system and no HTML coding
that's just kind of a sidelight actually
