Al's Fairy Gardens
You can ad a bit of magic to your garden either inside or out by making a portion of it a fairy garden. A fairy garden is supposed to attract and make a home for good fairies so they stay and bring luck and good fortune to your garden and your home. They are made up of small homes, furniture and chairs. You can build one in a pot or in a secluded part of your garden (to give them a little privacy). We stop by Al's Garden Center in Sherwood to chat with Amy and her daughter Rachel to learn more about this phenomenon.

yeah
where does garden center in sure what
time with Amy and her daughter Rachel
thank you for bringing rachel and the
reason that rachel is here is because
we're going to show you a different kind
of garden and she's the expert
that's right all right you have to come
down here with us all the way down here
and this is a fairy garden
I just love this everything's in
miniature and there's a reason for the
finger guard what is it yes well it the
real reason is to attract fairies into
your garden that's part of the theory
behind it and that it's just a lot of
fun you can see all the little miniature
pieces that you can add to it and the
little fairies and who doesn't want a
cute little miniature Barry in your
garden right yes yes those are the lures
to get the real ones to come
just like you would attract butterflies
and hummingbirds with certain things you
can do the same with theories
yes so we have tiny little trellises we
have tiny little tables and chairs and
yes
rachel is picking out her favorite
things because we're going to go plant
one in a few minutes but this is really
what makes the garden a garden right and
as these little house plants are
actually perfect for a fairy garden
their little miniatures it could be just
a little tree for a ferry to hide behind
and there are all kinds of different
colors and shapes and options for those
little house plants and that's really
all you need are a couple small plants
and some pieces of furniture to get
started get it started and you can guess
it's great this big galvanized trade but
you can even do this in a big pot
yes you could use a terracotta pot you
could use a box just anything that you
have around you can do it outdoors
yeah you definitely could but this one I
love because you can do it indoors yeah
yeah these little plants would take a
daily water right and pretty much yeah
you'd want to check them every day and
just see what they need
so it would be candy or to have this
little one inside anyways right
well i just love this and I know all of
the kids out there going to love it too
but like you said you can't spend it
outdoors
yes alright so we're going to go take a
look at what an outdoor fairy garden
looks like
ok so this is a perfect example of an
outdoor fairy garden yes this is just
beautiful and I love of course the
little door that
leads right into the tree trunk isn't
that fun yeah and all of the little
pebbles and really the ceramic mushrooms
really set it off
that's just such a great idea it's so
great and actually all these things are
available at Alice garden center just
right here and all you need are some
plants and you can throw in some ferns
you can see that we have some different
things for the outdoors some pastas and
a stealthy work great and if you have a
tree trunk that is perfect
so that works out really good and and i
love the stones with the little words on
them at the stones really add to it a
little frog is kind of fun to tuck in
our little fairies here and there and
then if you have a shaded area
why not throw in some plastic right
exactly what you need you can goes you
know we're really not the experts on
this whole fairy garden thing are we
know i think the kids are a little bit
closer to that I didn't go to rachel is
showing us right now
what her idea of a fairy garden is going
to look like and i love that you only
really need a small space and you do you
can use any little thing anything that
you have around as a as a you know a pot
or whatever you need is a base is great
and it's really fun to just add things
and the neatest thing is it's just up to
your own imagination it can be whatever
you want it to be and kids have a great
imagination
they do you can use all sorts of things
that whether you buy them or whether you
already have some of these things you
know some of these little toys anything
kids can i can add to it and they can
change the theme on a whim whatever you
feel like doing
but they really are the experts when it
comes to this sort of imagine and play
and it really also gives them a great
intro into gardening
it does it does it gives them their own
little interest and we've seen a lot of
grandparents coming in to get things for
their to do with their grandchildren and
parents with their kids so that's been
really need to see and you know they do
like to play in miniature like
dollhouses and little cars and so this
is just another way to do that
yes all right I don't have any me thank
you so much so very gardens and you can
buy a kit actually you can if you want
to keep it really simple you can start
off with a kit that has the dirt and
pebbles and fairy dust everything to get
started
that's right a fairy kid else including
fairy dust that's right
thanks so much a reef thank you
yeah
yeah
