Switching Columns and Rows in Excel using transpose

Demonstrates how to use Excel's transpose option for Paste Special to re-orient rows of spreadsheet data in to columns.

excels transpose feature allows you to
rearrange the data in a spreadsheet so
information that was in columns will be
in rows and vice versa for example let's
say you have a spreadsheet for monthly
sales by department there is a row for
each department and a column for each
month but you need to show the months in
rows with the departments in columns all
you have to do is select all the cells
in the table with your mouse then
right-click anywhere in the highlighted
area and choose copy next right-click on
any cell outside the area you copied
choose paste special from the menu
select transpose and click OK when the
data is pasted into the new location the
data that wasn't columns will be
rearranged into rows and the copied Rose
will now be in columns there is one
common problem to note if you try to
copy an entire column and use paste
special transpose you will get an error
that happens because excels columns can
have more cells in them that rose can
you can avoid this problem by just
selecting specific ranges of cells or by
selecting rows instead of columns
