Create a Composite Image with Background Eraser in Photoshop

In this tutorial, A.J. demonstrates that layer masks & fancy clipping paths are not always necessary to combine two images in Photoshop. Sometimes all you need is the right Eraser tool.

Tuesday last week we take a look at the
improve sharpening inside have Lightroom
3
and Adobe Camera Raw 6 today we're gonna
jump back into Photoshop
on a show you how to make a quick image
composite let's go ahead and take a look
you can see on the screen from you I
have two images the
image on the left has a nice
harbor scene but I just don't like the
overcast
sky the image to the right has a much
improved blue sky
well make my composite with these two
images all-star by using the move tool
was gonna drag the blue sky picture over
the harbour
to start the composite work now go ahead
and change my view on a rearrange the
strain to make things a little bit
easier for you to see
open up the Layers panel want to see
that indeed
the blue sky is above the harbor scene
now I'm going to move this in the place
but make things a little bit easier
reduce the opacity up the sky where
are simply press the number five on my
numeric keypad they give me fifty
percent opacity
and now I can go ahead and move this and
the place so I think
right about here is gonna do pretty good
so what I haven't lined up a change the
opacity back two hundred
by pressing 0 on the number pad and I
need to change the order of the layers
to do this all unlock the background
layer by option or alter double-clicking
that bypasses the dialogue prompt and I
just simply drag belair to change the
order
now I'm going to use the blue sky
that's in that country side picture to
make a better composite image
I could use a layer mask I could do a
clipping path and a bunch of other fancy
non-destructive edits to really make my
composite image
but sometimes its okay to be destructive
sometimes the best tool for the job is
simply an eraser tool
and that's what I mean to use today so
if we take a look I'm gonna go to Meijer
a shirt or group
and I want to see that group with the
eraser tool is
the magic a racer and there's also
something called the background erasure
so this is what I'm going to grab on to
grab the background erasure
and I wanna make sure that I said its
property
the sampling equals wants the reason for
this is if you look very closely
at the brush those across here in the
middle
and if I set sampling to once in means
whatever's immediately underneath that
crosshair
his what's going to be the race color
the reason I want to use the background
eraser if we zoom
n you can see and the masthead there's
lots have lines for the sales and I just
I'd rather not erase these or have those
go away if I can help it
so the background erasures gonna help
with this you can see in one fell swoop
I was gonna press and hold the mouse
and start a race in the same notice I
can erase
over the building I can race through the
boat I can race through the sky
and it takes just a couple passes
and not have the blue sky this is before
and this is after tony took a couple
seconds
I think that's pretty amazing but
Symantec closer look
if we talk about the area's in the mast
says I can still a race here I can do
this by notice the crosshairs
right there might buy the people's head
and I can just press in a race and look
at how clean that is
and taking all that out hey does a
really good job taking all that out
hey I can erase right through there are
no problem
it does a great job so sometimes
using a destructive tall is OK a major
