I just introduced myself in Japanese.
In this lesson, you're going to learn how to introduce yourself in Japanese.
There are three sentences to do this and it's super easy!
And you're going to learn them all right now!
So in just three minutes you'll be able to introduce yourself in Japanese.
Okay, here's the three lines:
HAJIMEMASHITE.
Nice to meet you.
WATASHIWA -- stick your name here -- DESU.
Watashi wa Hiroko desu.
and YOROSHIKU ONEGAISHIMASU.
First we have HAJIMEMASHITE.
Nice to meet you.
HA-JI-ME-MA-SHI-TE.
HAJIMEMASHITE.
This expression means "Nice to meet you."
HAJIMEMASHITE literally means "for the first time."
This phrase is often the first thing said when introducing oneself
and appropriate for all politeness levels.
Next we have WATASHI WA HIROKO DESU.
I'm Hiroko.
Now, Japanese has one tricky point:
The verb comes at the end of the sentence.
So, WATASHI -- "I" -- WATASHI WA --
My name is Hiroko so I put HIROKO
DESU -- "am"
I... Hiroko... am.
WATASHI WA HIROKO DESU.
I'm Hiroko.
So if your name is Mike you put Mike.
WATASHI WA MIKE DESU.
Finally we have the copula
Don't be scared
It's kind of like the English "to be"
And finally we have
YOROSHIKU ONEGAISHIMASU.
"It's a pleasure to meet you."
or "Pleased to meet you."
YOROSHIKU. YO-RO-SHI-KU.
YOROSHIKU.
ONEGAI. O-NE-GA-I.
ONEGAI.
SHIMASU. SHI-MA-SU.
SHIMASU.
YOROSHIKU ONEGAISHIMASU.
This phrase is contextual and gets its meaning depending on the situation.
This literally means "Please be good to me."
It is a commonly used expression which corresponds to "It's a pleasure to meet you."
You can often hear these phrases while somebody's bowing. YOROSHIKU ONEGAISHIMASU.
See all these words? I'm gonna say the exact same thing with...
Ta-da... These two words.
First we have: HIROKO DESU.
So you just put your name here.
and DESU.
HIROKO DESU.
I'm Hiroko.
This means exactly t he same as the other sentence we looked at.
I'm Hiroko.
WATASHI WA HIROKO DESU.
But it's okay to say HIROKO DESU without
WATASHI WA -- "I"
That "I" is implied.
So in sentence two we have YOROSHIKU.
and no ONEGAISHIMASU.
But it means exactly the same thing.
So a very informal introduction is
"YOROSHIKU. HIROKO DESU."
Now this is not for business meetings or formal situations.
But super informal situations only.
Now there's no excuse for you not to be able to introduce yourself in Japanese!
