Indonesia-USA Deep-sea Exploration: Google Earth Virtual Tour

Take a virtual tour to learn more about the Indonesia-USA Deep-Sea Exploration of the Sangihe Talaud Region expedition. The expedition, which took place in the summer of 2010, featured a number of firsts, including the maiden voyage of NOAA ship Okeanos Explorer; the first joint Indonesia-USA ocean exploration expedition; and the first joint international mission with two ships sending live video to scientists in Exploration Command Centers ashore.

This map and its products are a result of collaboration between NOAA and Google and establish a foundation for improving data and product integration and access.

following the first-ever joint ocean
research expedition by the Republic of
Indonesia and the United States much of
the coral triangles unexplored and this
partnership aims to help reverse the
decline of coral reefs and protect
natural resources the expedition began
in the central region within two island
chains stretching north sulawesi and was
undertaken by scientists from the US
National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration and Indonesia's Ministry
of marine affairs and Fisheries as well
as the Indonesian agency for the
assessment and application of Technology
telepresence was used to send data in
real time to scientists who stood watch
it both exploration command centers in
jakarta and Seattle little Hercules a
remotely operated exploration vehicle
descended 6,000 feet under the sea to
capture images and video of exciting new

these were collected by little Hercules
over 27 dives range in depth from 800
feet to over two miles scientists on the
Indonesian research vessel barona jaya
deployed autonomous reef monitoring
structures which mimic the coral reef
habitats in order to monitor the
diversity of the lesser-known brief
animals here we have a photo of an
amazing crab just one of thousands of
images collected the Exploratorium in
San Francisco also brought the
excitement of the expedition to on site
visitors and others around the world
through telepresence and webcasts after
38,000 square miles mapped and 27 ROV
dives the index at all 2010 expedition
