and what do they do when I'm acting in
my role as a consultant and someone
comes up to me and asks me what do you
do Steve I tell them i solve problems
and that's really what a consultant does
there a problem solver someone you hired
to come in and take care of a problem or
issue that you have it could also put on
training sessions and evaluate things
within your business but primarily there
a problem solver so when you have a
particular issue or problem to be solved
that's when you're going to hire a
consultant if you don't have the talent
on board at your company already and so
when you think about that a consultant
is someone who solves problems and that
tells you that when you hire a
consultant need to be sure that you have
a clear definition of what the problem
is and what the result is that you want
to get from that consultant how they're
going to solve the problem when they're
going to solve the problem how long is
it going to take to do what is it going
to cost to get this problem solved
it's not an ongoing relationship if you
will but it's more about short-term
project based set of results a CPA's can
a CPA be a consultant certainly someone
comes to me and wants help with their
tax planning that's a consulting
engagement they want to understand
something more about their business
financial statements they may hire me to
teach them that that would be a
consulting engagement they may have a
problem in trying to hire the right
person in their accounting department as
an example and they don't know how to
figure out whether
not the person that they're interviewing
has the technical skills to do the job
and so they may hire me as a consultant
to sit down and interview the candidates
for them looking for whether or not they
have that technical skill and ability so
consultants can do a wide variety of
things just understand when you've got a
problem that needs to be solved and you
don't have the talent on board you're
going to hire a consultant someone who
solves problems
