"Card Locked", "Card Error", "No Memory Card" and "Format Card": This tutorial covers corrective troubleshooting steps for these and other SD and SDHC memory card problems. Most of these techniques are very simple, and do not even require opening the camera case.

memory card locked memory card error and
no memory card
those three years that i just showed
gave examples of are very common issues
for your average camera user
believe it or not though they can be
easily corrected in most instances and
i'm guessing about ninety percent of
cameras that experience those issues can
be fixed by the average user
just knowing what the reason of the the
problem is
each of those is caused by a specific
issue I'm gonna go over each of those
issues and give you also some additional
tips to correct this problem for most
cameras first problem list it was memory
card locked
believe it or not it's very easy to fix
for most cameras i'm estimating forty
percent of you are viewing this
this is your problem and off to describe
it if you look on the side of your
camera or on the side of your camera
card you'll notice this tiny little
white
toggle switch slide switch it has two
positions locked facing away from the
connectors at the top and unlocked
position which is the forward position
toward the connectors at the top of the
card
take the card out of your your card out
of your camera and take a look to see
what position it's in even if it's in
the unlocked position for position to
take it and do a slide down and slide
back up again to put it
reset it back in the unlock position
then put it back inside your camera and
see if that corrected the problem i'm
guessing about like I said by thirty
percent of you just fixed her
your problem but for those of you still
have issues after inserting the card
stick around I would describe other
fixes for this problem later on in this
video
the second most common problem for most
people when dealing with card error
memory card error
the reason for that is usually for most
people is that they're using the wrong
type of card for their camera
i'm going to show you these two cards
that we should see right here
the one on the left here is a secure
digital high capacity
usually these type of cards are for
gigabyte or larger this
this one here is a naked like card but
if you have a 4 gigabyte card or larger
chances are you have an sdhc card now
though
although this car looks exactly the same
as this standard secure digital card
the format it uses very different if you
have an older camera or an older
computer save five years or older
i'm guessing around two thousand eight
or older or a camera that is seven mega
pixels or less
it can't use this card but for most
cases of you out there
if you're trying to use a for google
gigabyte card in your over camera
I guarantee that's probably your issue
what you need to do is use it to get my
card for all over timbers and the card
readers on or computers the there's just
no way that they're going to recognize
these newer sdhc cards now you probably
noticed if you go to the store though
the most cards these days or four
gigabyte a larger pretty hard to find a
2 gigabyte card these days but you can
still find these on amazon.com and
relatively inexpensive they run about
six to seven dollars these older two
gigabyte SD cards
so if your cameras and other camera and
you're having issues with memory card
error
I'm just go on Amazon and purchase one
of these order to the gigabyte SD cards
and that should correct the issue for
most of you still here
oh i forgot to mention I the second
option for those of you with older
cameras and if you can't find a regular
secure digital card you can also use two
gigabyte microSD cards with an adapter
in your older cameras for these cut type
of cards
this again is a s SD standard SD two
gigabyte card for these to work you need
an adapter and the adapter looks exactly
the same as a microSD card except you
insert the little card into the slot on
the back of the adapter and again this
will work exactly the same as a 2 2
gigabyte SD card if you have been using
the the right card for your camera and
memory card here just started to show up
recently
the chances are you may have not have
formatted the card in your camera as
your camera manufacturer recommends just
about every one of you have to her
you need to format the card in your
camera when you first get it for in most
cases to work fine for a while but as
time goes on is additional pictures are
added and delete it
the cards nearly all in all cases if
they haven't been formatted in the cart
in the camera
they will corrupt with time not to do a
format now be very careful doing this
because this will raise the card when
you do a format but if you go in the
cameras menus in this case I'm going to
go into the canon camera menu and for
canon cameras it's usually this little
tool menu is where the format's located
and what you do is you go down to under
the Tools menu for cannons to the one
selection that shows you the cards
capacity and then you select it and it
will ask if you want to do format now
low-level format I'm going to uncheck
that it's not really needed to do a
low-level format and unless you really
want to totally erase the card that will
make the card unrecoverable
if you do a low-level format but I
unchecked low-level format and almost
hit OK and the card has been erased in
the cards for Matt and it's ready to go
so again if you're experiencing memory
card error and the using the correct
card and you are using the correct card
you're probably experiencing this
problem
now if you had images on that carb and
you were experiencing memory Carter
by doing this format with you know with
that
checking the low level format there is a
possibility for you to recover those
images that were on were on that card
using recovery software now my other
videos
here on youtube I they're called
absolutely free photo recovery i have
three different versions of it outlines
freeware software that you can utilize
to recover your photos
just click on my name and look for any
of the absolutely free recovery
softwares it will direct you to my blog
site which goes over how to recover
photos that have been lost
well you have format your card Yusei and
that's not the problem
well the next issue look at if this is
occurring if you're getting memory card
error intermittently say after you've
taken a photo and then you want to
switch and take a video and then all of
a sudden the cards says in card here
just out of the blue
the next issue that you want to look at
is the speed of the card in this case
this is a class 10 card this is how you
tell the speed of your card is look for
the little sea with a number in the
center of it if you don't have a little
sea with a number in the center of it
such as this older standard SD card
chances are that card is too slow for
what you're trying to do especially with
these newer newer cameras today with
higher megapixels or taking high
definition video you want to have a
class 6 or larger 6 or higher speed card
with the stands for is megabytes per
second i believe read or write speed to
the card
ok i'm sure most of you are correct me
if it's the other way around here but
again
I've you're experiencing this
intermittently with that your cards
try to purchase a new card with a and
look for class 6 or larger on the card
if memory card error is occurring
intermittently for your card and use a
card reader with your computer
ask yourself do you know how to
correctly remove the card from your
camera to unseat it
you don't just in most cases you don't
want to just pull it out of your card
reader or pull the card reader out of
your computer as this can if you do this
without properly and mining it can in
some cases cause a
yeah Carter because can corrupt the cart
the one especially the cards read being
read or written written to that at the
time you remove it if it hasn't plated
doing what it was doing the proper
proper way to remove the card is if you
in windows vista windows XP actually
nearly all versions of Windows you go in
the lower right hand corner one of your
selections will say safely remove
hardware and eject media select it and
look for your mass storage device in
this case it's my cannon DC card select
eject mass storage device and once you
see safe to remove hardware
it's safe to remove that card and unplug
it
ok what you've done up to so far has not
been successful in getting correcting
your memory card locked problem
the next issue that we're going to look
at is a physical problem with the camera
itself that can easily be corrected
actually I just what to do such I'd have
to show you first how the lock/unlock
switch in the camera works now this is
the interior guts from an old nikon l320
has a nice little card reader here still
attached to it that i can show you how
the card reader lock unlocks which works
now with the card in the unlock position
the forward unlocked position may first
point out where they get lock unlocks
which is it's this little gold switch on
the side of the card reader now as a
card is inserted this tab
it slipped forward physically pushes
that locks which closed
watch watches i put the card and see how
that little gold rocks which
I hope this is in focus let's see how
that little Goldilocks which moves with
the lock switch push forward and push
back it still moves but not quite as
much not enough to close the switch
so if you notice this little switch this
little switch can really be easily
gummed up by just a simple a grain of
sand can get in there and stop it from
operating properly prevent it from fully
closing to correct this if you look in
your cameras lot
you'll notice on one side of that slot
that little gold switch now if you take
a non metallic objects getting on
metallic language such as a toothpick
I got a little plastic toothpick here or
or a regular toothpick and go in and
products which push up against it
not too rough but enough to move it
trying to dislodge any sand particle
that might be in their jamming it up
do that a few times with their your
toothpick and then place your cart back
in making shorts in the unlocked
position and see if that correct the
problem with the camera is actually has
been successful for a lot of people so
you don't see that
try to pay particular attention to see
if I put a is actually moving and I'm
not telling you to open up your camera
and and disassemble it like i'm showing
here you can actually do that with your
normal camera but just opening up its
door looking for that slide switch and
pushing up against it that this case
it's not here in this side push against
it with your toothpick and see if that
correct the problem
well that didn't correct the problem
this is a method of last resort and this
is actually pretty good for people who
who accidentally dislodge the slide
switch if it breaks off
what to do in this case is to take a
simple piece of cellophane tape
I hope this is focused if you noticed i
put a small piece of cellophane tape
over the slide switch itself covering
the entire grew very aware that slides
which is that on this will give you a
little more push on that site switch
inside the camera
now if you do this make sure you don't
use dictate you want something thin
cellophane tape and when you do in
certain in the SD card slot
make sure that you don't feel any
resistance see if you're feeling any
resistance at all with that tape on
there
don't do this ok you don't want to get
that tape jammed in there and you don't
want to get your car jammed in here
where you can't get it out again it
should still relevant
they're sliding in and out relatively
free in a way to test it is to push up
against it and see if this spring pushes
it back out again if the spring does not
push it back out again don't push it any
further into the slot but with that tape
on there that can usually give us a
little more push on that was on off
switch on the SD card slot and sometimes
that correct the problem so try that at
see that correct the problem if you're
still here and you're still getting the
card lock problem
after trying all these issues here for
all these that
troubleshooting steps it may be time to
actually open up the cameras
if you really want to do that it's very
risky to do such and i don't recommend
most of you have any because you don't
have the
sorry he's done it most of you out there
aren't familiar with electronics and
shouldn't be opening up your camera but
for those of you that are tech savvy and
have used a soldering iron before in
your past
now you might want to consider an
opening up your camera and if you go to
my blog site
I include a link that shows you how to
jump
I this on off switch on the cross this a
SD card that can physically close that
switch with that and make that switch
no longer the issue but it will be
always recognize that the Carters in the
camera even if the car's not there so
that's the last resort for those of you
that are still here now for those of you
again that have been experiencing memory
card errors with your card and
especially for those of you who receive
a message on your camera and on your or
on your computer that says the card must
be format it
please go to my or go to my other videos
absolutely free photo recovery any one
of the three videos and click on the
link is provided they're little and look
for the corrupted card procedures that
are located with that link that should
help you correct the issue for memory
card error
especially for those with that are
saying that card format is required
ok I've gone over most of the steps i
could think of that can correct this
problem hopefully I i helped most of you
that have a view this video I'm sorry
for those of you that are still here
though it with an uncorrected card but
again the last resort is to consider
either professional repair arm
especially if your cart if your camera
is valuable
you do not want to go opening and trying
to fiddle with it yourself inside that
camera but if your camera is an older
camera and you do have some familiarity
with electronics and
how to do soldering i consider soldering
that on/off switch closed so i hope i
hope that most of you here but again
that's it that's all i can think of for
this particular problem
visit my website gotta lick provided for
my website which goes over the steps
more detail in text
okay thanks folks
