Hard drive data recovery on a 500GB Western Digital drive. This is actually a follow up to this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wYY-Ix... where we demonstrated why the old "freezer trick" diy data recovery method is not a good idea. This point was demonstrated perfectly by the fact that the heads were damaged almost immediately after powering on the drive. Upon opening the drive we found that microscopic ice crystals had started to form on the platters and there is no doubt that this is what killed the heads.

So we thought this was the perfect opportunity to do another video where we actually repaired this same hard drive and accessed the data on it. This doesn't go into any real detail about the critical steps that are taken during the head swap, mainly because these videos are not meant to be tutorials. They simply highlight some of the procedures that we do when we repair hard drives.

yeah
yeah
ok
all right I thought this would be a
pretty cool little follow-up to what
we've been doing on the last couple
videos which is you know we had to drive
that we put the freezer went through and
looked at it and you can see that there
was you know some crystallization of
frost and stuff like that on the platter
did it again with this drive here
actually a little bit more thorough we
actually put a desk it into the the bag
as well and it's a plot wrapped
there's no breather hole on this Drive
so this was as airtight as a hard drive
can generally get so and we wanted to
kind of just show doesn't matter what
condition you're dealing with you're
still going to have potential to have
some frost buildup on the platter
surface we put in the freezer like that
and you know it's also good to keep in
mind that putting it in the freezer
does not repair a set of damaged heads
it does not repair corrupted firmware
which can also exhibit symptoms as
though head has been damaged so the only
thing it may ever have anything to do
with is the electronics themselves and
actually if you have a chip that's
overheating things like that
it's getting hot right away the cold
temperature may put that symptom off a
bit but for the most part you really
take a risk by putting in the freezer
because of what it can do
when you fire up to try the first time
which I think we've shown with this
drive the instant we powered it up and
try to calibrate and it was starting to
and then it just lost the heads because
the heads hit the area of the platter
that actually had the little bit of
accumulation frost that were on
so what we're going to do is we're going
out there and just use this opportunity
to repair this hard drive and cross your
fingers that it works i didn't leave it
running long enough to do any real
damage the plantar surface or anything
like that but we'll go through a power
up quickly
just as kind of a follow-up to show you
what the drive is doing so will go over
here to one of our imagers and get this
set up and like so this is just to show
you kind of the symptom of the drive has
now after it came out of the freezer
now watch or probably work but it didn't
work
whenever we first pulled it out
i'm going to apply power to it
just start to spin up
can you hear the head clicking that's
not taking so long
I'm going to spin it down so basically
what we have here is a drive that was
working before we did the the last video
put the driving the freezer for about 18
hours pulled out of the freezer and
immediately went to go powered up and
this is the symptom that it had so
there's no doubt that that's a head
problem as soon as we open the drive up
you can see frost accumulated on the
platter surface so we're going to go
through now and swap out these heads
put another setting good heads in there
and see if it works
so we'll get started on on the next
phase it already
continuing on now with our little
experiment
driving the cruise
filterheadz
bring up to now
swap the heads out
the pictures were shot in the head
first thing to do is go through and just
simple this round but i want to show you
something that's coming unique with the
western central
voice of this very moment
even
recovery on this tribe
shoot
show
what it is
that we see a lot
also to begin kind of idea for ideas
that makes them a little
other -
always get through it
just to make sure my mark everything
I think it's the future
we don't want
go through and put the wrong so that
from
one thing I'll show you though -
we get a lot of times people sending
drives are like no one just want to see
if there's anything
scratch over
flattered or what
like
with Western is over eyes the way that
they are set up
they had aligned it these actually
pretty much
Herman initially 5 cover
case number one
so you don't necessarily have to remove
if you were we
don't worry about what I'm seeing we
don't know sir
disregard to start taking the case cover
off from
a great for
first thing we'll do a lot of times
you're not wasting our time that we know
it after that
drive the screws and start clicking
right
taxes
sticker
deal
careful up there
but essentially what we'll do
give you a way of looking at the bottom
surface for i actually have an open the
drawer
you need anything see
the bottom side of the platter
a little
not only that but even feel something
that's obvious there
actually tell if there's anything any
debris that might have floated around
there
and stuff
listen piece of Lourdes
that one there
I'm saving on
I don't see the stretch from the bottom
it's also one of the side
what is it
something is just not right
it sounds really horrible my drive and
something somebody dropped a bunch of
sand in there
might be okay to go through this little
bit back and take a look
please for the Money shipping and
Anderson let me see it looks like
charcoal inside there on that label
learning like that
that's a good sign of sliders damage
there's really no reason to even sending
it
so just
why
but once we get in here I'll show you
another thing that makes
this is the father drive so it's
a little more get cooking
big butt
finger the drives get the time of the
dance to get spur platter
try to get more data on each mother
surface while the probably run into it
you have just very my new tolerances
misalignment on
it's then you run into problems for
or any environment issues with
instead of heads
only at night here to try to get
everything reset
actually with this point
right
normal use these heads here mr. has
already been open
this type of drive here
some of the
we have a whole process that we go
through
throws we know the letter to work on me
we know that the kids are part of the
butter surface
going to show you something here
mr. i'm here at six hits and
a problem
but the western digital drive
this thing that case number alignment
these fits
just been loosely inside
figures
but they just released his monster
holding expensive
it's only because
case cover here
sit down
this part of the case number
this area that
that place
so with western digital's actually had .
platters when they first simple the
drugs most part drive manufacturers
police have the thermal transfer the
platters ahead of time western digital
the case
the drums are simple with morning
platters
hits are installed
then the case cover goes on and only
been at the tracks written
so when you get into where you deal with
western digital's
track the initial track
line on the butter is truly random
and the phone
variations in the head and also
variations of this alignment
shift
just a few millimeters one way or the
other
it
one two three
why it'd be really cost
take the apartment
it's our part on
this up there's just something
apparently more difficult
three line
for the nuances
is it this is extremely for more money
and more clubs on this job
this is just something we're just kind
of just seeing if this is gonna work
excel
have a tool for doing this but out
hard to do with the camera right here
better than this
but again
this is not
natural
the spring
there you go through
this
also it
another thing is this is not
Pete
upload the senator
I know these heads are bad
that's to get it
word about this drive system of
registration
right here
there's a whole process when it goes to
loading and offloading head so you have
to follow because Caleb that has come in
contact with each other
you want to be offloaded
I'll show you
these hits the model here
you don't want to come together like
so there
have the heads come together like that
pretty much toast
when you go through to get them apart
again
welcome to stick together and then just
so
we're dealing with two heads ways to do
it fairly easy
610
to show that on
so basically that's it enter off the
parking
- there's no screw holding the place
just about
sliding in
only do and that's what makes the
difference
just been loosely in there
set him down
to show you that this is the ceiling
friends
makes them more careful another world
is this part is easier because you need
the heads right off
it also causes problems
so
that's the disassembly of the stronger
I'm gonna go there now I'm going to the
park drive and what you saw me do just
right here
it's been a reverse that process for the
heads up before
reload them onto this Drive
- simple
we'll see the sleeping
I don't
no that it will but I didn't see
anything obvious that would
everything this Drive
cheese
obviously it was the fun
all right that's it come on - mimics
step in gold
take it to imaging after get the new
we have our replacement heads installed
and we have the drive setup on our our
image again and this is just an example
such have a two terabyte drive sit over
here
let's get to our destination drive and
we'll go ahead and power this drive up
cycle and it's just been up to
it's a busy state here
yeah
um
I think the heads took so that's good
refresh and yet there is our drive again
sweet ok we'll go through just not going
to build a head mapping like that on
here we go through and just see if I can
even get it to start the imaging process
okay there we go drives imaging
it's actually imaging very well I'm
always surprised when we get western
digital drives that actually image
fairly good clip right off the bat
they're really really finicky when it
comes to head swaps and usually we have
to play around with the head alignment a
little bit more than this
usually I would have gone through
powered this up print some clicking
pause the video made some adjustments to
come back but this one here when the
heads actually park off of the platters
on to that parking ramp there a little
bit more forgiving
so when it comes to head alignment but
anyway this is it so it's looking good
we can see down here just to give you a
little more idea what we look at our
imaging we can go through and see it has
a the ntfs boot sectors or being shown
how many files that it's being that are
being recognized this . it also gives us
some indication of the types of files
that scene that are the most critical
usually such as images so here it's
already detected 71 image files and nine
microsoft office files and these are
executables here that's detected so
anyway
all in all pretty good deal and it's
going along and imaging now so that was
a perfect follow-up to two are putting
the hard drive in the freezer killing
those heads and then going back and fix
the drive
