EmEditor Professional: A Fast Windows Text Editor for Huge Files and CSV Data
EmEditor Professional is a Windows text editor that opens files up to 16 TB, and it costs $60 for the first year at checkout, then $45 a year to renew. It's for developers, data analysts and security staff who regularly open log files and CSV exports that choke ordinary editors.
If your files fit comfortably in Notepad++ or VS Code, you probably don't need it. If a 5 GB log has ever frozen your editor, this is the kind of tool that fixes that.

- Developer: Emurasoft, Inc.
- Version: 26.4.1
- Platforms: Windows only (64-bit Windows 11 and 10 in the current installers)
- File limit: 16 TB or 1,099 billion lines, whichever comes first

- What we checked: the vendor's latest installer is emed64_26.4.1.msi, 78 MB, and the order page showed $60 with a 12-month renewal at $45 before tax, on November 6, 2026. We didn't install it or time it on a large file, so performance details come from Emurasoft and the reviews quoted.
Before you buy
This is a rental, not a purchase. Emurasoft stopped selling lifetime licenses in 2023, and since version 18.1 EmEditor Professional won't run without a current subscription. If you stop paying, you drop back to EmEditor Free, which is for home and school use only.
Buy in the right place. A license bought through this order page or EmEditor's website works with both the Store and desktop versions. A license bought through the Microsoft Store works only with the Store version.

Overview
EmEditor looks like a classic Windows editor, with tabs, toolbars and a status bar, but it's built around one idea: file size shouldn't matter. Files open with only a little memory, and a multithreaded design keeps the window responsive while it works. Open a CSV and it switches to a table-like view, with columns and a frozen header row.

Professional and Free are the same program. You switch between them from the Help menu, so a trial doesn't mean a second install.
Features
EmEditor opens huge files without loading them into memory
EmEditor opens files up to 16 TB or 1,099 billion lines. Fast View mode, added in version 26.3, opens a huge file almost instantly, and version 26.4 made it editable: you can type, paste, undo, Replace All and use multiple selections, and the original file doesn't change until you save. Beyond 16 TB, the Large File Controller lets you open one section at a time, and Split and Combine Files cut big files into workable pieces.
EmEditor works as a CSV editor
EmEditor detects CSV and TSV files and shows them in columns. You can freeze the header, define custom formats, sort by several columns, combine and split columns, filter by column values and delete duplicate lines. It's a fast way to clean an export that's too big for Excel.

EmEditor filters a file down to the lines you need
EmEditor's Filter Bar hides every line that doesn't contain your search string, as you type. On a log file, that takes you straight to the errors or to one user's entries. The Abort button restores the full view.

The Filter Bar showing only the lines that contain "Apricot".
EmEditor compares two files side by side
EmEditor's Compare Files wizard lines up two documents with their differences colored, and it can synchronize scrolling between them. Batch Replace applies a list of replacements at once, and Find and Replace supports regular expressions.

Two versions of a file compared, with removed and added lines colored.
EmEditor automates work with macros and plug-ins
EmEditor's macros are stored as editable JavaScript with a documented API, so you can change them after recording. Plug-ins add snippets, projects, web preview, word count and word completion.
EmEditor has an AI chat panel, if you want one
EmEditor's Chat with AI panel works with providers including Anthropic, OpenAI, DeepSeek and Google, for help, code generation and explanations inside the editor. The ChatAI plug-in comes with the MSIX packages and is a separate download for the legacy installer and portable versions.

The Chat with AI panel docked in the editor.
Benefits
- You stop splitting files by hand. A huge log opens as it is, so you don't need a separate tool to chop it up first.
- One program replaces several. Text editing, CSV cleanup and file comparison all happen in the same window.
- Your scripts stay readable. JavaScript macros can be edited and shared, unlike macro formats that save as binary files.
Real-World Uses
- Incident response: open a multi-gigabyte server log, filter to one IP address, and copy the matching lines into a report.
- Data cleanup: load a CSV export with millions of rows, sort by customer ID, and remove the duplicates before an import.
- Database work: find and change a value in a large SQL dump in Fast View mode, without waiting for the whole file to load.
- Config review: compare a production file with a staging copy and see exactly what moved.
Who it's for, and who should skip it
Buy it if you work on Windows and regularly handle files in the gigabytes, or if you're paid to clean CSV data. Skip it if you're on a Mac or Linux, since there's no version for either. Skip it too if you dislike subscriptions, or if your files are ordinary source code: VS Code and Notepad++ are free and do that job well. At home or school, try EmEditor Free first. It isn't allowed on corporate or government computers.
Usage Guide
- Download EmEditor and run the installer. The MSIX download keeps itself updated through Windows App Installer.
- Use all the Professional features during the 7-day trial. Afterward, it becomes EmEditor Free automatically.
- To buy, order on the page below and enter the registration key you receive.
- Open a large file from File, then Open, or by dragging it into the window.
- For CSV files, use the CSV toolbar to set the format and freeze the header.
- Type a string in the Filter Bar to narrow the file to matching lines.
Where it falls short
- A lot to learn. Reviewers on G2 and Capterra say settings are spread across many menus, and macros and plug-ins take time to set up. Even a fan on Emurasoft's own page says he has "lost my way a couple of times."
- Windows only. This is a regular complaint from people who work across systems.
- The MSI is on its way out. Updates for the legacy MSI installer end in March 2027, so new installs should use the Store or MSIX version.
- Older systems are second class. The 32-bit version and earlier releases need a sign-in to the Emurasoft Customer Center. Windows 8.1 is covered only by the legacy MSI.
- Free is limited. EmEditor Free has no CSV tools, Filter, Sort, plug-ins, scripting or Large File Controller, so the trial is your only look at them.
What Users Say
EmEditor has a small but consistently positive review base. It has no Trustpilot reviews, so most independent opinion comes from business software sites. On November 6, 2026 we read G2 and Capterra through search summaries because those sites block direct reading, so those two boxes are summaries, not quotes.
G2: 4.4 out of 5 from 27 reviews
Reviewers mostly praise large-file handling, quick loading of very large CSV files, and fast regular-expression search across files. Several mention email support that replies within hours. The main complaint is the interface: settings are scattered across menus, which makes options hard to find. Some also find the full edition pricey and want more examples in the documentation.
Capterra: 4.5 out of 5 from 34 reviews
Capterra's scores are 4.5 for ease of use, 4.3 for customer service, 4.7 for features and 4.3 for value for money. Reviewers praise speed with gigabyte-sized files, column selection and CSV handling. Complaints cover price, the lack of Mac or Linux versions, memory use and a learning curve. One reviewer wrote, "I don't like the limited features available in the free edition," and another thought large-file speed could be better. Capterra says it offers reviewers a small incentive.
SourceForge: 4.0 out of 5 from 1 review
Elma E., who lists herself as an SEO expert, wrote in a review edited February 21, 2025: "EmEditor is engineered to use fewer resources while maintaining fast performance, even with large files."
Testimonials on Emurasoft's website
These are chosen by the vendor, so read them that way.
- Ed Burnette of ZDNet called it the "World's fastest text editor" and wrote: "EmEditor is a smart editor from Emurasoft that can handle pretty much any sized file. 2GB? 20? 200? No problem."
- Claude Vogel of BuzzStory, Inc.: "EmEditor is a complex software with a ton of features and I've lost my way a couple of times but Emurasoft has been each time immediately responsive and helpful."
- Charles, a software developer: "forget Excel, EE is THE BEST way to work with CSV files." He adds that opening "a PHP log from a live server and see it open in under a second is something."
- Marcus: "After working a while with EmEditor, I just want to say it's really the fastest, most convenient and best editor I've ever worked so far under windows."
- Karen: "I wanted a program that could open large files. EmEditor proved that this was a very simple request compared to its capabilities."
The themes: people buy EmEditor for speed on big files and stay for the CSV tools and responsive support. The criticism is about a crowded interface, the price and being tied to Windows. Few people complain that it fails at its main job.
Comparisons
EmEditor vs Notepad++
Notepad++ is free and open source, and it's enough for everyday code and config files. Reviewers often move to EmEditor when Notepad++ can't open a very large file. If that's never happened to you, stay on the free tool.
EmEditor vs VS Code
VS Code is free, runs on Windows, Mac and Linux, and has a far bigger extension library, so it's the better code editor for most developers. EmEditor is the better choice when the file itself is the problem: logs, dumps and giant CSVs.
EmEditor vs Excel
Excel stops at about one million rows per sheet, while EmEditor goes well past that. Excel still wins for formulas, charts and pivot tables, so use EmEditor to clean the data first.

System Requirements
- Windows 11, Windows 10 or Windows Server 2019 or later for the MSIX and Store versions
- Legacy MSI: Windows 11, 10, 8.1 or Windows Server 2012 R2 or later, 64-bit only
- About 78 MB for the installer
Conclusion
Worth it if big files are part of your job. At $60 for the first year and $45 after that, EmEditor Professional costs little next to the time it saves one analyst or admin. The one reason to buy it is that it opens and edits files other editors can't. The main reason not to is the subscription: stop paying and the program you rely on falls back to a limited free edition you can't use at work. Use the 7-day trial on your largest real file before you decide.
