Common Fingerpicking Patterns Part 1

Common Fingerpicking Patterns Part 1

In this set of tutorials, instructor Rob Schumann shows you how to apply five fingerpicking patterns to simple chord progressions. These patterns will help you develop finger independence in your right hand along with a solid rhythmic feel. Part 1 of 5.

yeah
mmm
yeah
the subject of these tutorials is common
fingerstyle patterns and we're going to
be looking at some arpeggiation patterns
in the right hand that you can apply to
any chord progression and this comes in
really handy if you're writing songs and
want to put some different rhythmic
fields with it or if you're just reading
a chord progression off of the chart and
doing some accompaniment
it's good to have a number of patterns
in your head that you can just recall at
any time and apply as you see fit and so
whether you use a real stretch classical
right hand for more your hand kind of
hovers over the strings like this
where he's more of a folk type of
approach for your hand has a little bit
flatter of a look
all these patterns should work
regardless
some people also I should mention will
play fingerstyle with just their
fingertips and that sounds just fine
particularly on a steel string or a lot
of people as i do have some longer
fingernails on the right hand to attack
the strings with and it really doesn't
matter with these different shapes you
can use them regardless so let's start
out on this first segment with a very
basic fingers at style technique is with
most of these patterns were going to
assign fingers to the strings so your
index fingers on the 3rd string middle
fingers on the second string and ring
fingers on the first string and then
your thumb will be going to put whatever
bass note that you're on
so we'll look at this pattern
so it's a very simple pattern we start
out with the thumb on the bass note
which in this case with the g-major
chord is going to be on the sixth string
the index finger will then hit on the
3rd string
going to the middle finger on the second
string
back to the index finger on the 3rd
string
then hitting the ring finger on the
first string
and then back to the index on the 3rd
string
and in the middle of the second back to
the index on the third
slowly
and you can also use your thumb if
you're going to do that for more than
one measure you can use your thumb to
hit other notes
basenotes out of that cord so i can play
the G and then go to the D for instance
and then go and hit the be at some point
as well
you seem kind of play around with the
basement that way and then applied to a
progression
we're going to use that same pattern and
then put the thumb on the basement of
whatever chord we're going to so in this
case i'll go from a G 2 a.c at nine
- Adi in a DSS for
and we'll look at some more patterns in
our next few segments
I know my name
I would like to play for you to know
that i wrote some years ago
it's cause II
and you're going to see also that in
order to get there you want to bend your
ring finger towards the 4th Red
on the third base tree but they decided
to not this actually based in with my
son
yeah
my interests
yeah

We measure some songs in sections of fourths with the beat count being a repetitious, one, two, three, four. Other songs may be measured in thirds and counted as a repetitious one, two, three. This produces a different beat. The count or beat is determined by the time signature.
