Creating HyperLinks in a PDF
Links are not just for the web. PDF supports links to allow you to organize and navigate your PDF files. In this tutorial, I go over creating links using the link tool and a little about the button tool, a good way to create repeating links like "return to top" on the bottom of every page.

ok as most of you know I'm a big fan of
PDF and acrobat have been getting out of
it a little bit lately because of the
moving a lot of stuff in the full text
to websites and find a little easier and
more accessible however Acrobat is a
fantastic application and one of the
things you can do with it is create
hyperlinks in a heat in
but in the PDF and even between pdfs in
a
if you have UPF arranged in a portfolio
or package
this one's going to show you a quick or
you how to do it in a single PDF and I
had four cases here and what I'm going
to do is it will combine these four
cases into one PDF to do that click on
file and right now i'm on a mac but the
commands are and the menu options are
the same as they are on a pc to combine
and then assemble emerged files to a
single PDF PDF portfolios are really
really nice and they're actually very
slick so to get things into one PDF just
click on add files and add files and i'm
just gonna click on all this book I
wanted the shift click on the bottom one
to get all those in between and i'm
going to add those files and they're in
there and you can reorder these things
if you want i'm going to combine those
files
and they combine into what's called a
binder will say that on the desktop now
to use the linking feature it's part of
this control panel here this this
toolbar here
this tool bar is called advanced
advanced editing this one here
the easiest way to get to these toolbars
just right click anywhere on the empty
space up here on the top of the screen
and then go to advanced editing
I'll get rid of smaller ones to clean up
a little bit and we'll open advanced
adding back up here is the link tool to
create a link
all you have to do is go to the place
where you want the link to be looking
like to get it going and you'll see this
is this right here it happens to be a
the case a download from West law and
left the links active you'll see that
these these light up here and you can do
some things you can't believe these you
can do all sorts of things with his once
they're lit up
but for most cases you probably won't
have that maybe you will but to create a
new link you just drag the link tool
over the area you want to create a link
and then let it go it'll bring us this
create link box
this is where you can decide what you
want your legs look like you probably
wanted to be an underline which is
visible rectangle and the line style
would be underlined you choose the color
the thickness and the link action is the
important part here and you give me the
links to a lot of different things open
files open web pages do custom lengths
that the perform other that can perform
other actions for you but for this
we just want to go to a page you and
that will create a link inside of our
PDF so we just click next and then this
thing pops up go to a page view
now let's say we want to pick create a
link on the page say 50
this is where we were looking at go so
just putting 50 they're going on - 50
and will create a link to it here
click there and then click set link now
we will bring us back to our place where
we started which is on page one and then
click order and then when you're working
with
just take a second here - when you're
working with the media and an acrobat
get used to the idea of using the tools
to see what's going on so to stop
everything and just check out with the
things actually got a hand tool and that
way you can you can operate within your
PDF as if you were using reader or some
or another application that doesn't
allow you to edit so click on that and
see it takes us right to page 50 now
i'll show you something actually if you
wanted to do something that for example
you want on the bottom of every page you
want an option to go back to the first
page this is a little more advanced but
not terribly so you just click on the
button tool and put that there and this
will be the button
you name the button head back to top and
then you double click on it to bring up
the properties box
and right here we want you can put a
tooltip you want there's a bunch of
other stuff you can do the appearance of
what it looks like there's no border
color fill color is great when you
change the fill color to save your ad
and we can put things in it
we can have label only label said top
and then actions is the important part
and we're going to say select an action
again it's going to go to page view so
we go to page view that makes you want
to add that and then we're going to set
this to page one and we're going to
click here and we're going to say set
length
that's gonna give us back now we see
back to top here now we're going to want
to do is once on the bottom of every
page so we have to duplicate this link
so we right click on it and then we go
to duplicate click on that and then see
duplicate this field on which pages
we want all pages click OK and now we
have that little top button on the
bottom of every page so we can click
here to go to our page 50 and then go
top to go back to the back to the top
and as you as you can see it's on every
page
so this is a very handy way to get links
in your document and dance around your
back very easily you can put them
anywhere and to create a link once again
I'll do it really quickly
one more time click on the link tool
drag the box where you want to appear
make sure this is go to page view this
is defined what your life is going to
look like
go to next and then go down to the part
where you want to show up
want here and set the length and then
click on the hand so we can check it out
and there we go and that is creating
links with in a PDF and a little bit
about the button tool that will allow
you to easily put things like return to
top and so forth on the bottom of the
page
