Hello my name is Aekta
First of all you need to have an account on the IRCTC website
If you don't have an account on the IRCTC website you can watch this video to learn how to create an account.
Come let's book a ticket on the IRCTC website
Type irctc.co.in in the browser
The Indian Railways website will open
Enter your User ID and password to login
Enter the Captcha in the box
If the Captcha is unclear you can regenerate the Captcha by clicking on the refresh button
Enter the Captcha and click on the blue Login button
Now we are logged in the Indian Raliways website
Once your ticket is booked then this section will be useful
such as cancel ticket, refunds or print ticket etc
First let's learn how to book a ticket
On the left side you have 2 different tabs
The first tab is Quick Book
On clicking Quick Book a form shall open
If you know the exact details then you can type them here
Most people don't know the exact details
Hence "Plan My Journey" is more useful
Let's click on Plan My Journey
Let's fill in the details
First we need to provide the From station . I will choose the from station as Delhi
A no. of Delhi stations appear in the drop down menu
I will choose DELHI-DLI
Next is the To or the destination station
Let's book a ticket to Jaipur
Select JP for Jaipur
The next detail is the journey date or the date of travel
You can type the date directly in the given format
It is easier to choose the date by clicking on the calendar
Click on the icon and a calendar opens up
and you can book a ticket for the next 60 days
Let's select the journey date as 15th March
Once you select 15th March in the calendar automatically the date will be displayed in the journey date box
The next item is the ticket type
There are 2 options E-ticket and I-ticket
E-ticket can be booked online
In I-ticket the ticket is sent to you via courier and can take a few days
Let's select the e-ticket option and continue with online booking
Click on the Submit button
All the trains between Delhi and Jaipur are displayed here
The train name , departure time , arrival time , distance , travel time weekly schedule and class is displayed
Before proceeding further let me explain the menu on the left side
The first selection here is journey class
You can choose your class of travel here
I want to book the cheapest ticket and will choose the class accordingly
As I make the selection of the class of travel, the no. of trains reduce
There would be a few trains which don't have the sleeper class that I have chosen
The next selection is Train Types
If you wish to travel by a specific train type you can make the selection here.
I will leave the selection as is for now
The next selection is for station
You can choose your station and see which trains depart from your station
For now I will leave all 3 as checked
These are the trains as per the selections made
At the top you can select the quota
There are 3 options - General, Physically Handicapped & Ladies
For now I will select the General quota
Now let's select a train departing in the morning
I want to select the cheapest option even if the travel time is longer
Let's choose the Ranikhet Express
Let's click on SL
The details of the SL class are now displayed at the top
The availability for the next 6 days is displayed
On the 15th March , 68 tickets are available
Let me check another class
Let's click 3A Class on Ranikhet Express
Another tab opens up on top and you can see that this class is waitlisted
In this manner you can check the availability of tickets in advance .
For waitlisted tickets you can know your number in the wait-list
So let me choose the SL class itself
Let me click on book now for SL Class for travel on 15th March
A new page opens up
The journey details are at the top
From Station Delhi
You can choose an alternate boarding station as well
If you click on Schedule you can see the different stations at which this train stops
You don't have to necessarily board the train from the first station
You can board the train from a later station as per your convenience
I will choose Gurgaon here
This train which departs from Delhi at around 4 am reaches Gurgaon at 5:30 am
Let's click on Gurgaon
And Gurgaon is now reflected as the boarding station
Jaipur is already selected in the destination station
The quota is General
And the reservation is upto Jaipur
Now let's go to passenger details
Let's fill in the Name , Age and Gender
Next is the berth preference . If you click this you can indicate your preference for the berth
You can choose if you want the lower, middle, upper , side lower or side upper berth
Let's click on the No Preference option
Next is the Senior Citizen option
Since I had entered the age as 40 , the senior citizen option is disabled
Let's change the age to 60 and see what happens
The senior citizen option is now enabled and we can now tick the box
Please note that senior citizens may be asked to provide verification proof such as their AADHAAR card or voter id card
You can provide your AADHAAR card No. here as well. This is optional and not mandatory.
I will change the age back to 40
As I change the age to 40 the senior citizen option once again become disabled
There is a discount for senior citizens
I am booking a ticket for a single passenger
However you can enter names and other details of other accompanying passengers in the enclosed form
Details of upto 6 passenegers can be filled in the same form
If any children below 5 years are travelling with you their details can be entered below. Their tickets shall not be issued
Select this option if you want to be auto-upgraded
The next option is to proceed with the booking only if confirmed berths are allotted
I don't want this option and will choose the None option
Another option you have is to indicate your preferred coach ID
However it is not necessary that you will be allocated the coach that you indicate as your preference
I will leave this option as unchecked
Next type the Captcha in the box
Your mobile phone will be displayed here and a SMS with the booking details will be sent to the number
Click on the Next button
The journey and passnger details are displayed on the top
The fare details are displayed here with the ticket fare Rs 190, service charge of Rs.11.24 & total fare Rs. 201.24
Next we come to the payment options
There are different payment mode options
You can pay via Net Banking or Credit card or Debit card
or IRCTC Prepaid card or Cash Card or EMI
Let's choose debit card here
Let's select our bank here
There will be a transaction charge of 1.8% of the transaction amount
This transaction charge will be added to the Total Fare of Rs.201.24
Let's click on Make payment
The transaction is being processed
Enter your debit card details here
Enter the expiry date here
Enter the CVV code here
Now click the Submit button
The summary gives your card no., merchant name , purchase amount and purchase date
You can authenticate the transaction through internet pin or through a one time password
If you remember your Internet Pin please enter the same
Or else you can generate a one time password.
The One time password would be sent to your registered mobile phone no. with your bank
Let's generate a OTP
A six digit one time password has been sent to your registered mobile
The password is valid for 30 mins
Enter the OTP here
Click on the Next button
The payment gateway authentication is being processed
Now we have been re-directed back to IRCTCwebsite
Our booking is complete
The ticket details are displayed here
The seat and the coach no. have been assigned
If you click on the Print button a page will open
You can take a print out of this ticket by clicking on the Print button
Let's go back to the home page
Click on My Transactions and click on Last Transactions Details
It shows the booking transaction ID and booking status as booked
If we click on the booking transaction ID the journey and passenger details are displayed
So our ticket on IRCTC is now booked
