Hello! Mridu Parikh, your personal life organizer and welcome to Life is Organized!
And today I want to talk about your bajillions of receipts you might have.
Now if you recently saw my video on organizing your purse, you know I loves me this clear durable plastic bags.
So I suggest definitely have one of
these in your purse or your bag just to collect your receipts so they're not all over your purse or stuff in your wallet.
Now that's a great system moving forward but what about all the tons of receipts you're already saving?
Well here's the dealio:
You need to separate your receipts into short term receipts and long term receipts.
The good news is that about 90% of your short term receipts can be trashed and your long term receipts can be filed!
Your short term receipts are things like groceries, and gas and other daily expenditures you have all the time.
You usually do not need to keep these types of receipts for a couple of reasons:
#1: You usually don't refer to them because
these are not typically the types of items that you're returning.
And #2: Many of the local places that you're visiting can look up your purchase by credit card.
So for example if you bought something
in Target and then pay via credit card, you don't need to keep that paper receipt.
If you need to return or exchange something,
you can just hand in our credit card and they can look up the purchase for you.
More and more establishments are going this route, so check with your local places that you go to see if they can achieve your information without a paper receipt.
#3: Most items need to be returned within
30 or 60 or 90 days.
So if you're keeping your receipt longer than the amount of time that they can be returned,
it really is useless and you're just saving a lot of unnecessary paper.
Now, long term receipts are for those big
ticket items, and a lot of times they come
at warranties like electronics in your home
or maybe for a big piece of furniture, or artwork.
These types of receipts should be filed away in your filing cabinet by category and year.
So they're accessible but they don't need
to be in your day to day stuff all the time.
Other examples of long term receipts are reimbursements you might need for medical expenses or things
you need for your taxes or if you have a home business, you need to keep those separately.
So when either type of receipts, short term
or long term, you should plan to go through them once a month.
That way you can throw out the ones that are expired or no longer necessary,
and file away the ones that you need to save.
And that's why I loves me my little baggy
coz' I put them in here all month long and
at the end of the month I go through them,
separate the ones I can throw out
and keep the ones and file away the ones that I still really need. It's awesome!
Okay so here's this week's challenge:
Go through all the receipts that are just in your purse or wallet at this time.
Put your long term ones away for filing,
and get rid of all your short term ones that you don't need anymore.
And if you like to see the very cool way of
how I file and put away my long term receipts,
then you're gonna love this week's additional resource which is another video in exactly how I do this.
If you're a Plus or Pro member you'll have
access to this and if not,
come on over to life is organized and sign up for plus or pro membership and you'll get additional resource every single week.
