welcome to tekzilla bites
I'm Michael hand hey have you ever
wished that you convert a whole batch of
photos with a single command or how
about creating a beautiful montage with
just a few strokes of the keyboard
well I have the perfect tool for you
it's called imagemagick this command
line tools available on mac linux
windows bsd everything so the way you
want to get started is the first
imagemagick dot org that's what the K
first you want to download the binary
release for your platform so there's
different instructions for different
platforms so just install install based
on what the site tells you to do so now
that we're installed we want to launch
terminal so if you're new to using the
terminal in the command line watch the
primer that I did on text little ways
back i'll put it like a link to the show
notes and basically I tell you the very
basics of what to do on the terminal so
now that we're ready to go
let's try out the modified tool modify
converts batch the photos from one
format to another with a single command
so to use it we wanted type modify dash
format PNG and then drag the file that
we want to convert so in this case we're
converting to a PNG format to resize
images it's just as easy to type modify
format PNG dash resize fifty percent and
then drag the image so you can do fifty
percent you can do forty percent you can
do any percent that you want
alright that's pretty cool for one image
but what if you have a whole folder of
images that you want to convert like in
this case i have a bunch of pictures
from Korea it would be pretty tedious to
go and drag individual files and do it
one after a time but that's where wild
cards come in and wild cards are things
like you can use an asterisk that it
kind of tells the computer all right i
want everything in this folder to just
convert or I want everything with dot
jpg to convert which it just simplifies
things completely so for example if we
want to use wildcards we can do modify
dash format PNG and then star dot jpg
this tells the modify tool to take
everything that's in that path with a
dot jpg
and convert it so instead of having the
type of everything out it's just looking
at that whole folder and converting them
to PNG so next the montage command so
this takes multiple images and put them
together and then it's like a nice
little border around it so to you this
command we do montage dash geometry plus
20 plus 20 that's the border that we're
doing so in this case we're doing 20
pixel border around all the images and
then we'll drag the images that we want
to add to it and then we'll do montage .
jpg which will be our output file so now
you can see we have an image with three
images together and a nice border easy
as that
and if you want to switch it up some if
you want to change the background color
you can add a switch to it so if you
want to do dash background black then we
have a black background simple all right
what if still images or anything you
need your images to move I'm talking
animated gifs well with that I have a
command for you it's the convert command
so say I want to take a bunch of these
images from this folder and compiled
them all together so it cycles through
them i would type convert and then drag
the images that i want to bring over and
then dash delay 50 so this is the delay
how long the images will actually be up
there so if you want it longer you can
do dash delay 100 and then animated .
jiff is our output file so as you can
see it creates one animated gif file and
just cycles through all the images that
i added super simple
alright so hopefully this gives you an
idea of how powerful the image magic
tools actually are
I just scratched the surface of what
they can do you can look at the
documentation each one has like 60
different switches and commands that you
can add to it you can auto rotate images
you can auto level them so it's really
powerful check it out definitely go to
imagemagick dot org and hey if you want
to watch more texel bites these short
little pieces go to tekzilla com or go
to youtube.com slash tekzilla thanks for
watching
