Windows 7 Keyboard shortcuts and the Snipping Tool can save you time while working on the computer. Some can even get you out of a jam if you accidentally make a mistake.

Welcome to Desktop Learn
Today we're going to continue on from Part
One
With more handy Keyboard shortcuts
But first I would like to show you another
little trick you can use
With your Desktop
That can make it handy to add additional shortcuts
Now my original Desktop looks like this
Lots of things on there all kinds of goodies
that I can get to rapidly
But if you're in a position
Where you have so many icons on your Desktop
It's getting a little bit crowded
And you find you have to delete some
Just to make room for more
Windows 7 has an additional page
Where you can add more shortcuts
Oh Boy!
All you have to do is move your mouse
All the way over to the left side of your
screen
Hold down your left mouse button
And just pull that screen to the right
That gives you a whole new page
You can add a whole bunch a more goodies
This can be handy if you have several shortcuts
That you don't use very frequently
But yet you'd like to have them readily available
You can just cut and paste them
And put them on this page here
Let's get back to Keyboard shortcuts
The next Shortcut key I'd like to talk about
Is the Ctrl W key
So if you have a folder open
And you want to close out that folder
You basically have two options
You can go up here to you're upper right hand corner
Click on the X
And that will close that program
The other option you have
Is if you have a folder that's open
And you want to close it
All you have to do is hit the Ctrl W key
And that will close that file
So there are two options you can use to complete
the same task
The next combination of Shortcut keys
Is the Ctrl Shift N
For example
If you have a folder that's open
And you would like to add a new folder to
it
That what these keys will do
All you have to do is hit the Ctrl Shift N
And you will see down at the bottom
There is a new box that's been highlighted
That says New folder
All you have to do is change the name
Hit Enter
And that gives you a brand-new folder
Another way you can do that
Is just put your mouse in the middle of the
folder body
Right-click
Go down to New
And then all the way up to Folder
And you will see that there's a new folder
has been formed
Just waiting for you to give it it's name
It's already highlighted
Then hit Enter
So there are two different options
In creating new folders rather quickly
Using the last technique
Or by using the Ctrl Shift N keys
The next thing I would like to show you
If you're ever in a folder that has a lot
of files in it
And you want to go to the very top of the
file
All you have to do is hit Home
And that will take you directly to the very
beginning part of that file folder
If you want to go to the very bottom of it
All you have to do is hit End
And that will take you to the very bottom
part in that folder
In Part One we installed two additional items
on our Task bar
We put the little Snipping tool and the Notepad
One of the things that are handy about items
That are in your Taskbar down here
Let's say you load up something in Notepad
earlier
And you want to go back and look at again
All you have to do is go down to that Icon
For example Notepad
Right-click on
This will show you all the last items that
you worked on
So you can quickly go back to them
And bring them back up
Same is true with other items
Such as Microsoft Word
Just put your cursor over the Word document
in the Task bar
Right-click
And this will show you all the last documents
that you worked on
Which makes it handy
You don't have to go digging for them
This is also very handy
If you happen to be on the Web
And you do like I do so many times
I may have several pages open and am looking
at different things
And then
I go up here and I hit the
Big X up in the corner and I end up turning
off that page
Aw Man!
The way to recover that
Is using that same technique I described
Go back down to the Taskbar where you have
your Internet Explorer
Or whatever type you're using in my case I
use Chrome
Just right click on that
And this will take you up the last tab that
you had open
All you have to do is click on that
And Walla
We're back to where we were
Which is handy because I keep screwing up
all the time
And I lose the webpages that I've been looking
at
Another combination of Shortcut keys is the
Alt P key
Which will display the Preview pane
If you happen to have your Pictures folder
open
For example
I have this one open here it has some pictures
in it
Now if I want to have a little better view
other then a thumbnail view
Just hit the Alt P
And this will open up a Preview pane
So now you can see the picture in a larger
format
And all you have to do is move your mouse
over
To the top of the picture
You don't have to click
It will show that picture
For example there
Now the nice thing about that
Is you can go up here to the very top up here
And put your cursor right over the little
line next to the Preview panel
And it will turn into two little arrows
And you can drag that over a little bit further
So you can see your pictures a little bit
better
Just rotate your mouse over
You don't have to click
You just have to put your mouse over the picture
you want to look at
And it will show that picture and a little
bigger format
Now that's using a combination of Alt P
And it's used whenever you're in your Picture
folder
Now there's always a second way of doing stuff
If you are in your Picture folder
Like I say you can use Alt P
Or you can just go right up here to the very
top
You'll see little box and as soon as you put
your cursor over it
It will say 'Show Preview Pane'
So all you have to do click on that
And that does the same function
So again there's two different ways of getting
to your Preview pane
If you want to look at your pictures
Alt P
Or while you're in your Pictures library
Just go up and click on the little button
In the upper right-hand side of the screen
I would like to end this session
With just a quick review of the Snipping tool
That we talked about in Part One
If you go right down here
You will see where we parked the little Snipping
tool
This is particularly useful
If you have something that you want to make
a quick copy of
But yet you don't want to have to copy the
whole page
For example
Let's go to my website here
And let's just say there's something on a
particular webpage
That you want to copy
Let's just take one of these paragraphs for
example
You just look at and say ok
I want to save this little paragraph right
here
So all you have to do is go down here to the
Snipping tool
Click on that
And your screen will turn kind of cloudy
Just move the little cross up where you want
to start it
In one corner and you just draw a box around
it
Like so
And then when you let up on your mouse
It will have that in the Snipping tool
Now you can either Save this thing
As a JPEG a Gif or an Html file
You can copy it and paste it into say a WordPerfect
document
Or you can e-mail it to a friend of yours
It has a Pen tool on it
So if you want to draw all over it
You can do that
So like
Like so
That's really cool
And you have an Eraser so you can fix that
to take it off
And you have a Highlight tool
So you can go in here and highlight a section
if you want to
It's a just a very handy tool to have
So if your on the web
And there's just a small section that you'd
like to save
You can just go in and use your Snipping tool
And that's how the Snipping tool works
That concludes Part Two of Windows 7 Keyboard
Shortcut keys
In the next section I will introduce a few
more Shortcut keys
That can come in handy
