This episode of Tekzilla is brought to you
buy, carbonite. Time to get our HD nation
on. Douglas writes in with a question. You
mentioned in Thursday's episode of Tekzilla
that there is no Mac Blu-Ray support. That's
actually not true anymore. A third party company
has released Blu-Ray playback software for
OSX called MacGo.
The website for that is macblurayplayer.com.
In fact it would be great if Tekzilla would
have an external blu ray drive and review
the software for those of us who have been
waiting for support for ages, thanks Douglas.
So wanderered off to macblurayplayer.com downloaded
a copy for my air, I'll talk about that in
a second.
It's interesting, right? The software is free
for at least 3 months. They got Windows and
OS10 versions, which kind of surprised me,
right, Mac download, PC download. And it's
kind of Like VLC in the sense that it seems
to want to...whoops, wrong link...work with
everything. It's not just Blu-rays or DVDs.
like video CD, .mov, .mkv files, .evi's, .fob,
.wvmp, .mp4, .mpeg, and on and on and on.
So you're going to need to add a Blu-Ray drive
if you want to play Blu-Ray's with your Mac,
which is easy if you've got a desk top. Not
so easy if you've got basically a notebook
you need an external drive A plex door makes
a fantastic bunch of Blu-ray disc writers
and readers or you can get old school with
this giant beast that I have back here, which
is a five and a quarter inch drive enclosure
with a big old light on drive inside of it.
I'm afraid to move it too much because this
thing has been suffering a lot lately with
USB cable issues, But it was kind of weird,
I think it may have been the USB cable, because
this originally would not work in my Macbook
Air, it just would not recognize the external
driving closure. So, I'm like alright, it
must be Lion, right?
Fail. So you're - no actually, you're not
hosed. If you have a giant collection of Blu-ray
discs on your server or your notebook, like
Robert Heron does, you can actually play the
ISO files with the MAC Blue-ray player. Are
you saying he's a pirate? No, he owns every
single one of those discs. Oh, he just ripped
them?
himself.
Including at least four copies of "The Big
Lebowski" which Oh.
We'll give to you later. But the. It's kind
of really easy software. This is the MAC Blue-ray
player and it's kind of funny because he was
telling me, like you should have an external
Blue-ray drive with a USB connection above
2.0 which kind of freaked me out, because
you know, you're not going to get USB 3.0
without using an adapter card.
So, I plugged in USB 2.0 on Serafina's notebook
which I'm running right now and magically.
This is the part where I've magically ruined
it probably like moving it. Do-to-do-to-do.
Somewhere down here. Oh, look at that. It's
"The Big Lebowski" and I'm gonna choose that
and of course, it's Blu-ray. So, it takes
forever.
You are actually going to be able to open
this. So, I'm laughing because like. Oh, there
it is. Look. it's pre-rolling. It's just like
starting Let's see.
a Blu-Ray disc at home. It just takes forever.
There it is. Now playing "The Big Lebowski".
Awesome.
And look at that, and it's kind of funny,
because it's a pretty full featured player.
You've got, well actually it's, okay, so the
menuing system is a mess, but it does do subtitles
and you actually have to manually close those.
So, you can basically turn in subtitles. Actually,
some of the others I've looked at.
The subtitles should happen in English and
the other languages. This is interesting.
This is a bit of a fail for a Blu-ray. So
we get the English... I wonder if they set
up this disc a little bit differently. The
one thing I did notice is it actually looks
really good in terms of video playback. You
do not want to have a bunch of stuff running
in the background on your machine although
I will say it's not using as much, as many
of the cores as I thought it would, but going
to full screen even then it didn't blow out
the machine so I was kind of happy that the
blue ray drive seems to be pretty happy with
this.
You have a question Tara? I do not have a
question, I am just admiring your blue ray
research. I'm actually trying to remember
command F. How much does external Blue-ray
driver run you these days? The drives are
anywhere up to like a 100 to $200 printing
he's making in. This. In this case is like
a $48 Blu-ray drive and a $40 enclosure, but
this is like a big, ugly enclosure.
This is like fine for using at home but probably
something you want to try to stuff into you
don't want to take that on an airplane with
you. The Pluck stores are actually pretty
cheap by comparison, so I will say this is
free, it's got as social sharing aspect, I
could give a snot about, but it's free for
three month's then it's forty bucks, which
is cheaper than some windows blue ray software,
and like I said; "they've got a windows version
too.
It is not the most full featured" Blu-Ray
player out there but it is the only one that
natively runs on OS 10 that we know of. And
they've got to be wondering what Plextor costs.
So the problem is not Lion for sure then.
No, the problem is that Steve Jobs hates..
I've been having some problems with Lion myself.
I was telling Patrick before we taped the
show that my Android phone no longer connects
to my Mac Book Pro since I upgraded to Lion
That's not right.
It just doesn't work and I tried Googeling
and I haven't come across anybody else with
the same issues, so now I'm wondering if I'm
just insane. But, it stopped working literally
the second that I upgraded.
I think a lot of it is lion just being mean,
and look, there's the Plextor PXB 12 OU Blu-Ray
reader for 86 bucks. So it's...
Wonderful.
...it'll work. It's kind of funny, we should
actually. We should actually step away slowly
from the Blu-Ray devices. Actually, I'm kind
of, I can't wait to see if it was actually
a usb cable fail that was causing the problem
with the Macbook air or just the inner weirdness
of the Mac Book Air. We should talk about
the new Blu Ray releases let's talk about
them movies.
It's time for the blu ray releases for the
week of August 16, 2011. First up, The Big
Lebowski. Robert Ahern's favorite movie. He's
been squirreling away copies of the HD DVD
version now he can start hoarding the lovely
1080p encoded at a delicious 185 to 1 ration.
And it's a really nice cinematic transfer.
Good colors, deep blacks, deep QSAs, deep
master audio then frankly, if you know Star
Trek, but hey, this is a movie about a Bowler
Stone and like, Russians trying to find their
carpet. Not an epic series of SpaceBattles
with Captain Kirk. If you're fan of the movie
and you know who you are, it is worth your
money if you have a Blu-ray player especially,
if you're gonna do odd, little commemorative
pack.
things like the limited addition.
It looks like a book so it makes you think
that you're learning while you watch it.
It's the cones of defined and mastered their
own bizzare sub genre in the Washington Post.
Hey, since I've already talked to much about
the Big Lebowshi there's a digital copy you
can take on the road and all the extras from
the 10th anniversary of the AC/DVD versions,
next up, Dexter get your murder on people,
seasons one through four previously been available
on Blue ray, and today's season release of
both the fifth season and the box set of seasons
one through five, leaving you just enough
time to get caught up, if you avoid sleeping.
eating before season six premieres in October,
okay maybe you can eat. The fifth season contains
three fit, you can buy blu ray discs in an
mpeg 4 abc code, 178 to 1 aspect ratio Dolby
true HD 5.1 sound you can actually enjoy the
killing. Extras include interviews with the
cast, a featurette on Julia Stiles' role in
the series, the first two episodes of the
showtime series,"The Borgia's" and episodes.
That's just one of my favorite shows but I
haven't seen the fifth season yet, so I might
see one coming up.
Also released this week, Demolitional Man,
this 1993 movie is one of four Stallone films
being released on Blu-ray today, and also
stars Wesley Snipes and Sandra Bullock in
an oh-so-dated sci-fi epic single 25 GB disc
mpeg 4 abc Kodak 240-1 aspect ratio and another
DTHC master 5.1 sound track. Bluray.com.
gives a video quality four and a half out
of five, saying it offers major improvements
from the DVD in detail, depth and color differentiation,
unfortunately there are no new special features
here, only the audio commentary with director;
Marco Brambilla and producer Joel Silver though
frankly I think the movie stands on its own
without extras.
It is a timeless classic of really poor projection
of what the future is going to be like. As
always, check our show notes at Tekzilla.com
or ACNation.tv for the links to the rest of
this week's Blu ray releases.
