everybody today diane and i are going to
be doing a tutorial on how to balance
ambient with flash so I know there's
many ways of doing it there's more
technical ways of doing it but this is
how i do it
want to show you guys my process on when
I'm on location and i'm using strokes so
i'm gonna go ahead and exposed to the
background and then I'm gonna expose for
her
i'm going to show you that process and i
hope that you guys can learn something
today from this using my explorer 600
TTL strobe but i'm going to be shooting
on manual and I've got my 47 inch policy
buff off the box and I got my 85 g
master with my sony a7r - so we're going
to go ahead and get started with this
tutorial
like right
ok so I'm on location and the first
thing I'm going to do is turn off the
flash don't even turn it on yet
what I'm going to do is expose for the
ambient so let's say I started off here
what I'm going to do since i have high
speed sync I'm shooting at one point
four
iso50 that's the lowest my soul goes is
suggest that you use iso 100 or whatever
you have whatever is your lowest ISIL
so here we go so I'll i generally like
to go a stop underexposed and you know
what
let's go there so that's going to be
this is what my ambien looks like i'm
gonna take a test shot
one two three there you go
ok that is step one of mixing ambient
with flash you leave the flash off you
figure out your ambient light before you
even turn the flash on this very
important because sometimes when you get
on location in your mind get scrambled
and you get kind of lost you looking at
the camera like what's going on
no no no so you leave the flash off you
figure out your ambient exposure first
so there goes now I'm going to turn the
flash on
ok with the sony automatically the
exposure automatically jumps but that's
not the exposure that I have so it's
still one stop on the exposed
ok so my flash
that one out 1 128
so it's not a low-power so let's see
what it does ready 123
ok so you see is not enough power so my
next step
I don't touch any of my settings what
I'm going to do is raise the flash power
so i'm going to raise it - 1:30 - okay
all right let's see what we got now
one two three you see that
so much better okay i'm gonna go ahead
and raise it up just to see what it what
it looks like at 116
ready 123
and while I think that looks even better
ok so there you go i mean it's as simple
as that
okay let me change this to continuous I
out of focus
I'm gonna take a couple more shot so my
ambien is set at net god
one stop on their supposed and now i got
my flash where I wanted to be so here we
go one two three
all right i'm gonna curve it this way a
little bit ago
ready 123 123 can't really find her I
because your hair is covered here you go
because i'm using I autofocus already
warned you want two three
boom see how easy that was step one is
to leave the flash off and go ahead and
expose for the background and then you
turn your flash on and then use all you
do is adjust the flash power you just
leave leave your settings that the way
they are
one two three lovely
all right so I'm going to take a quick
shot that's Miami it looks like right
that's what i wanted to look I wanted to
look really dark ok now I'm going to
turn the flash on all right and here we
go one two three
so now I got to raise the power just a
little bit more 18 118 power
one two three look at that
that's awesome so that's to stop one
exposed so one more shot
one two three there you all
alright so now i'm going to go ahead and
pretend as if i didn't have high speed
think i'm going to show you guys how I
would adjust for that
so I'm going to turn the flash off there
you go
ok so now i'm at let's say your cameras
at 12 fiftieth of a maximum speed ok 1 2
50 it
I have an overexposed picture here right
so what I'm going to do is I have to
compensate with stopping on this the
aperture so here we go
well 11 ok so now I got to stop down
with the aperture
I'm gonna go one stop under right there
so i may have f4
ok so that's not too bad f4 and now i
have to shoot
yeah so here we go so i have 4 150 of a
second iso50 ready 1 2 30
once i get
one two three there you go that's my
ambient all right now I'm going to turn
the flash on here we go
now let's see where i'm at 18 power so
let's see where
let's see what it looks like one two

ok way too hot i'm going to Lord
yeah yeah I was totally talking about

I've got a call about 130
while the flash fires at 132 one two
three
ok that's pretty good
