hello everyone my name is Elam on the
author of google drive and docs in 30
minutes and today I'm going to show you
how to convert in Microsoft Excel
document spreadsheet into google sheets
format for editing or for doing other
things with it it's pretty easy to do
and let's get started so first thing you
need to do is go to Google Drive and if
you have a gmail account you all you
will already have access to google drive
otherwise is follow the instructions to
register for google drive it doesn't
take that much time at all
so once you're in the Google Drive main
screen you'll see a button that says a
little link that says my drive right
above it is a new button click that and
what we're going to do is we're going to
upload a file microsoft excel file into
Google Drive select file upload and then
navigate to your hard drive where the
Excel documents located now Excel
documents as you may now come in two
flavors
xls or xlsx both are supported this is
an older format file and this is just a
list of links from it from an old book
that I that I wrote so let's just open
that up so it's a small file it takes
just a second to upload and if you look
in your my dr scroll down a little bit
you'll find it here it is right here
so first thing to do is to open it up
now i'm using google chrome and google
chrome actually supports editing the
document right in the browser the
original excel document we don't want to
do that we actually want to take it one
step further and converted to google
sheets and i'll show you how to do that
once the Excel documents loaded and go
straight to file save as Google sheets
this is what you want click on that
you'll see a little pop-up explaining
that it's saving it as Google sheets and
then sure enough it's converted now one
thing I want to say about converting
between Google sheets and excel or
Google Docs and microsoft word is that
the formatting is never quite preserve
the way that you want to in Google
sheets i have to say that microsoft
office is much better with formatting
tips then with formatting abilities than
Google sheets is so here's the original
microsoft excel version
here's a google sheets version you can
see that the colors are a little bit off
maybe the spacings little bit different
fonts a little bit different
but you know what this is Nick this is a
spreadsheet all I want really is the
data and has everything I wanted name it
has a you know several columns with
numbers in them i can manipulate the
numbers i can do other things with it
google sheets lets you save it as a PDF
download as a PDF go to file download as
PDF so there's lots of things that you
can do a Google sheets that you cannot
do in microsoft excel in any case if you
