hey guys first up to a quality tile
installation is the substrate
preparation because we're installing
tile and moist environment like a
bathroom here
we're using a cement backerboard this is
critical to creating a long-lasting tile
surround
let's take a look at some quality
considerations for installing your
backer board one of the things I like to
do guys before I actually and start
installing the cement board is to mark
the location of the studs the Centers of
the studs on the dry wall above the
backer board is going in this way we
know exactly where those are so we were
setting those last few sheets we know
we're going to hit the studs with our
screws
before you go purchase your backer board
make sure you check the thickness of the
drywall around the shower and make sure
you get the proper thickness you want to
make sure that if you have a half-inch
drywall on the wall you've got half inch
backer board or five eighths then you
want five eighths backboard
you also want to make sure you purchase
enough backer board to cover the wall
all the way up to 6 feet at least six
feet above the shower tub floor for
installation you'll need a utility knife
for cutting a marker straight edge screw
gun dust mask and a tape measure
you'll also want some special screws
that are made for this type of
installation that won't corrode cutting
cement board is pretty easy to score the
panel face with the utility knife and
cut through the glass fiber reinforcing
mesh then snap and cut the back side
mesh similar to cutting drywall power
saws really aren't recommended due to
the silica dust which can cause lung
cancer and damage
if you've got wood studs like we have
you want to make sure that your
fasteners are maximum of eight inches
apart
as you're installing the backer board
pieces fit the ends close together but
don't for some because they will break
apart
you also want to hold each panel up a
quarter inch off the tub or shower pan
that's typical manufacturer
recommendation
the next thing we do is level off the
joints with some mesh tape and some
order
and we'll need some mesh tape and a
float to do that
so why do we use cement board and
showers because it won't or soften swell
rod delaminate or disintegrate over time
but I'm like a lucky
