SmartWhois - Video Tour
Easy IP Address, Hostname, and Domain Lookup with SmartWhois. http://www.tamos.com/products/smartwh...

Hello, and welcome to SmartWhois. This brief
tour will show you how you can use SmartWhois
to look up information on any IP address,
host name, or domain. SmartWhois can be downloaded
at the TamoSoft Web site: tamos.com.
Once you've downloaded and installed SmartWhois,
you're ready to send your first query. We
can start with domain names. To send a query,
you need to type a domain name in the input
field here and hit "Enter." SmartWhois connects
to the database and delivers the results in
just a few seconds. We see administrative
and technical contacts here, DNS servers,
and even the Google and Alexa page ranks.
We also see when the domain was registered
and when it expires. In this example, we looked
up a .COM domain name, but SmartWhois works
equally well for virtually any domain zone
in the world. Let's try a Swiss domain. Here
we go; the results were fetched in just a
few seconds.
We've just learned how to find out who owns
a domain name. Now, suppose we'd like to find
out where the server is physically located.
This is typically unrelated to the address
of the domain owner. For example, a Swiss
domain name (.CH) might be owned by a British
company, and the Web server with that host
name might be hosted by a hosting provider
in the United States. So we click Query =>
As IP Address/Hostname, and we see that disney.ch
resolves to 68.71.209.12, and that IP address
belongs to Disney Online with the server located
in California, USA.
What makes SmartWhois so smart is the fact
that it works with dozens of WHOIS databases
all over the world, and it knows which server
to connect to in order to find the information
you need. We came up with this idea back in
1998, and since then the term "SmartWhois"
(our trademark in the US and EU) and the product
have become extremely popular all over the
world.
You can also look up information on IP addresses
that don't necessarily have corresponding
host names. We can simply enter a numeric
IP address and find out who owns it and where
it is physically located. As you can see,
this one is located in South Africa.
As the Internet is quickly evolving, new standards
regularly emerge. SmartWhois is up to date
and supports the latest standards. For example,
you can look up IPv6 addresses as easily as
we've just looked up old-style IPv4 addresses.
With the advent of International Domain Names
(IDNs), such names can now contain non-Latin
characters, as in this example. This is not
a problem for SmartWhois. It can be used to
look up domain names in Japanese, Hebrew,
or any other language, as long as domains
in that language exist.
Another nice feature of SmartWhois is browser
integration. When you visit a Web site, you
can click on the SmartWhois button on the
toolbar, which works in Internet Explorer,
Firefox, and a few other popular browsers,
and immediately look up the information on
the owner of the Web site you're visiting.
There are many other things you can do with
SmartWhois, such as data export in text or
XML format, batch jobs, command-line usage,
and so on, but they are beyond the scope of
this brief tour. Be sure to visit our site
and download the evaluation version to see
for yourself. Thanks for taking the tour with
us.
