hi everyone this is michael from office
orbitz.com I mean today to show you how
to backup your pc or mac with a Cronus
true image 2015
this video is part of an article in a
series on data management on office
orbitz.com you can read more about why
are chosen acronis as my backup software
and more importantly why I feel that the
acronis backup package is good enough
for me to recommend it to my audience so
without further delay let's have a look
at the Cronus so here we are with the
default view of Cronus and the coloring
shows us that the program is pretty much
divided into three main areas over here
on the left you have the toolbar in the
middle you have the list of your backups
where you can see the backups that you
have already and this is also where you
create new ones and the large wide area
on your right this way you choose what
to backup and where you want to put your
back
ok so let's have a look at the toolbar
over here on your left
it starts off with the backup menu which
will get back to in a moment
it's followed by the sink menu which is
where you'll find the Cronus cloud
storage feature I'm not subscribing to
that so i can show you but it's there
for you to use
it's followed by a tool menu and first
off you have a clone disc feature which
is something you can use if you want to
migrate your system drive to another
hard drive in case you have hardware
problems or something
next you have a couple of disk image
related features you have parallel axis
which enables you to access a Cronus
from smart device you have more tools
which you can choose to install if you
wish not going to get into this at this
moment it's followed by an account menu
where you can see if your software is up
to date and you can activate checkups
for updates you can upgrade to other
products and finally you have the help
menu here you'll find a nice help area
that follows the workflow of Cronus
nicely
moving on
backup area in the middle this is where
we're going to create a new backup and
use that as an example for the rest of
this video so I'm just going to go ahead
and create a new backup and i will just
call this back up and score 3
ok next we need to decide what we want
to back up by pressing the select source
button to activate three options that
you can see in the lower part of the
screen your first choice is called
entire pc and this is actually the disk
image part of the software for those who
don't know a disk image is a copy of
your whole system drive including
operating system programs settings files
everything but while creating a disk
image is in the fact that backup your
files
it's much more involved process under
straightforward file backup scenario and
creating disk images deserves its own
day really
so let's move on to the next option
discs and petitions is as the name says
for backing up entire discs or
partitions and could be used for simple
storage drives the last option files and
folders is by far my favorite way to
create a backup and there's also the
option that I'm choosing for this
example on your left you have the entire
system visible and this is where you
locate the directories that you want to
backup and on the right side is where
you make your actual selections of what
you want to back up so i'm going to go
into my computer here i have a dedicated
drive from my work as well as a
dedicated drive for the system in here i
have my personal work folder down here
and created a Cronus test folder for for
this purpose
then here are created three folders
which contains a bunch of images some
home movies some PDF files and all in
all it's about 200 megabytes of data so
you could go in and select parts of this
but if you have a data in a centralized
folder where did you should want to do
is simply select the whole thing which
is what we're going to do now and i'll
just select our Cronus test folder here
and i'll just go ahead and say ok to
that and you can see here that my
selection is about 200 megabytes so next
we need to decide where we actually want
to store our backup and by pressing the
select this donation button to activate
three options to choose from the first
option is that you can choose an
external drive in this case you can tell
that i already attached to a USB stick
that we're going to use for this example
the next option is the acronis cloud
which we're not going to use here but
it's there for you to choose if you wish
the last option and the one that we're
going to choose is the brass option
this is where we can choose whatever
storage this computer has access to
whether it's a local folder or network
drive or in a storage something here i
just select the USB stick and the
acronis test backup folder that I
created for this example and then I'll
just press ok down here now you can see
that i have selected what I want to
backup and I've selected a place to put
it and below here you can see that you
have the option to encrypt your backup
if you're working with sensitive data it
might be something worth considering
so now that
our selections taken care of we have
some options that we can choose from in
regards to how our backup is going to
work for us the most important thing
about a backup set up is that it's easy
to deal with and that it demands as
little as $PERCENT of our attention as
possible otherwise we're just not going
to do it so the first option area is to
schedule area which is where you can
decide if you want the backup to run
automatically and if you do you can
decide whether they wanted to run the
daily basis of the weekly basis monthly
you can set a time for when you wanted
to run during the day you also have an
option called upon event which is when
the backup is being activated by for
example starting up the computer or
shutting it down
you have an option called non-stop which
might be practical for us an area where
you are backing up the work of more
people where the amount of data is
changing a lot over a short period of
time
this basically created back up and
creates an increment area five minutes
the last option is of course not to
schedule it back up at all and leave it
up to happen or memory or maybe even the
tip from your calendar the next topic is
the most important part of this option
to walk through which is how our backup
is going to work how the files are going
to behave you basically have a handful
of options here first you have the
single version scheme which is basically
a one backup scenario this means that
every time the system creates a backup
it delete the old one
by all means one backup is better than
none of course but if your data very
important i think this solution is way
too risky I would definitely recommend a
backup scheme that relies on more than
one version the animation here describes
the backup scheme
perfectly next up is the version change
scheme this game is a combination of a
full backup and the sequence of
incremental followed by a new full
backup then another batch of incremental
which this animation describes perfectly
the system keeps building the cycles
until five science have been created
after which the oldest patch starts to
be deleted when the new batch is being
created the next game available is the
incremental scheme and as we saw in the
version chain scheme the system builds
on creating a full backup followed by
one or more incremental an incremental
is a smaller file and the full backup
because it contains only the files that
have changed since the full backup of
the previous incremental version apart
from the single version scheme this
scheme is the most space conserving
option however in that lies its weakness
because if you lose one of the
increments between the full backups or
form of them is damaged in some way that
cycle is corrupt
which means that you need to go back to
a previous backup cycle if you need to
recover some data
nevertheless if you choose this backup
scheme you can see that you have several
options to set up the number of
increments and went to delete the old
ones so that you can basically create a
scenario that resembles the version
change scheme that we saw before
next we have the differential scheme
which in some ways it's similar to the
incremental scheme
the difference is that this scheme takes
it up a little more space but on the
other hand it's a little safer because
where's the incremental cycles would be
corrupted if you lost some of the
in-between increments you can still
recover data with this solution even
though you only have the last full
backup and one of the differential
versions last but not least is my
favorite backup scheme the full backup
even though this is the solution that
takes up the most space and takes the
longest to run
i feel that a full backup from that
particular moment in time offers me a
level of data security that I'm
comfortable with the next tab is the
notification options here can ask for a
message if you're out of disk space you
can even have the system send you an
e-mail if that's the case
next is the exclusion to unless you have
special needs here i would just leave
the default settings and have the system
exclude system files and the last option
to have here is the advanced area
the first option is password protection
and of course this is where can add a
password to backup and you can choose to
add encryption to the security level
very quickly you have something called
pre-post commands which is an area where
you can add scripts to run certain
things or to leave out other things
next up you have something called back
up splitting which is where you can ride
your back up onto optical media and have
it split the back up onto the necessary
amount of media also you have the option
to split a normal back up into smaller
chunks which you might use as an
additional safety measure
we're good keep the one-half of one
place and the second half at another
place next to have validation which is
where you can have a chrome is validate
the integrity of what you're backing up
either when you're backing it up or
later at intervals it can go back and
validate what you what you've done
already and these options give you some
control off when this validation is
going on the next one is basically an
extra safety measure where you can have
your backup copy to somewhere else the
next part removable media settings is
part of the back up splitting where you
can have the disks bootable that's a
topic that goes beyond the scope of this
video next you have the option to add a
comment to your backup you may wish to
leave yourself a note about the
particular circumstances about this
particular back up the next points
called error handling it has a feature
called repeat attempted backup fails
I mostly leave this feature off because
i usually run my backup when I'm not
using my computer and if something goes
wrong I would want to know and not just
try again
however if i was using the computer for
something else at the time I might give
it one attempt but then i would want to
know that something is wrong so i'll
leave this off for now the next point is
called filed level security settings and
I would just leave both points off to
avoid things like file and folder
permissions to bleed into the backup the
next . computer shutdown should be
pretty straightforward simply check this
option if you want the computer to shut
down after the backup has run so the
last point about performance contains
firstly setting for the compression
level that you want for your backup it
can be set to non-normal I and Max
setting this to i usually works fine for
me setting it to non-normal might speed
things up a little bit on the other hand
you end up with larger file sizes so
i'll just say okay to that
alright so now we're actually ready to
create the backup so i'll just say
backup now down here so now the backup
is running and since we only have 200
megabytes to back up its gonna run
pretty quickly and at the bottom of the
screen you can see that while the backup
is being built the system is also
calculating an estimated time frame for
the backup all right that's it
the backup is done and hopefully it's
working
so the last thing we'll do is have a
quick look at the recovery feature to
see if our backup has actually survived
and if its in working order
ok so the backup has finished you can
see up here and the list that it's still
there and the little green dash
indicates that the integrity has been
validated but let's have a look for
ourselves to make sure that the backup
is indeed intact so to do that we're
going to test the recovery tool but
first I'll go back to my Cronus test
folder to simulate situation where
everything has gone wrong and all the
files are gone and then we'll use the
recovery tool to recreate everything
that was lost so i'll go ahead and
delete all the files and return to
Cronus and then i'll just go ahead and
press this recover files button and this
brings us back to the acronis file
explorer well just select micronus just
back up and press the next button now
you can see up here that we've selected
what we want to recover and where we
want to recover it too
alternatively you can use the Browse
function to put the file somewhere else
but in this case we want to put them
back to where we lost them then I'll
just press the recovering our button to
activate the recovery some other
processes running and when the computer
has enough information it's going to
create an estimate of how long you're
going to have to wait for the recovery
okay so far so good the recovery has run
its course and now we return to our
Cronus test folder to see if everything
is in fact back where it belongs and yes
my images are back the movies are back
the PDFs are back
so all is good so let's return to a
Cronus and the backup is done we'll
check that the backup is working and
that's it
we have secured our data and we should
be safe
so I hope you made it all the way
through and that this video gave you a
good idea of what to expect from
micronus true image as a backup software
and don't forget to consider the other
features of this package that disk image
features really good to have so keep an
eye out for a guide on disk imaging and
other topics an office overcame that's
it for me for today thank you very much
for your time and I hope you'll
subscribe to the office orbiter youtube
channel on your way out
so until next time have a good day bye
