Great product for private online collaboration network
Reviewed by veiko herne on 1/22/2009

I needed to find a private instant messaging program for a bunch of boffins doing top-secret stuff, and came across TeamMessenger which seemed to fit the bill, so I decided to test it out.

To my surprise, it worked without any hassle on both Windows Vista and XP. I was a bit worried as the product says it needs the Microsoft dot-net framework for security and such, but the installer didn't make fuss about it - on Vista it existed already and on the XP it kindly downloaded and set it up for me. I wish more products would be as smooth with their drivers and things!

The configuration offers TCP port 96 as the default for communicating with the hub ("server" as they call it), but if you don't want to bother configuring firewalls, it's better to change this to the usual port 80 (as long as you are not running a web server on the same computer with the TeamMessenger hub.

Starting the program, it was very much like MSN except with it you can create your own secure environment and keep your conversations private, at least unless someone is so interested that they are ready to spend some serious time on a supercomputer to crack your encryption.

Sending files over the conversation was also easy, and the "broadcast" feature was nice - send a piece of video or music, and it plays to everyone automatically without them needing to download it. There wasn't any problem even with bigger files although I wouldn't try sending DVD's over it.

The tabbed discussions were great, I wish MSN had the same - my screen is often full of chat windows which sometimes create embarrassing accidents when I type in the wrong window...

TeamMessenger also has a "smart tags" feature which they promise shows your free / busy status on Web pages and many Microsoft apps such as Sharepoint 2007. The idea is that where you see somebody's name, a little traffic light shows green, yellow or red depending on whether that person is online and free or busy, and you can start chatting to them with a click. I couldn't test it as I don't have Sharepoint, but it's supposed to be easy to add those traffic lights on any web page.

The product came with three licenses which are free forever, so I have been using it to chat with that boffin friend of mine for a few weeks, as she's not allowed to use MSN at work. The only missing feature I could think of is that there is no import tool for addresses - so every user has to fill in their details themselves at the start into the shared address book.

If you want to have your own private online collaboration network, Team Messenger can be the product for it. It's not as much fun as some of the things that kids use, but being Microsoft certified, even the guardians of corporate IT should not have big objections against installing it.
