I'm a gardener and when you grow things

when I found out what nature valley was
doing to help preserve our national
parks
I was so impressed today they have

that nature makes us better and I
couldn't agree more

so in the spirit of communing with
nature i thought i'd show you one of my
favorite ways that i like to enjoy the
great outdoors and teach you how to
start your very own group garden
spring is the perfect time to get an
herb garden started and you don't need a
big garden plot to do it
in fact one of my favorite ways to grow
herbs are just in some pots so the first
thing you want to do is find a sunny
spot so I really need at least six hours
of sunshine to thrive my pots right now
in the morning light are nice and shaded
become mid-afternoon this whole area
will be filled with son
then you want to fill your pots with
some high quality organic potting soil
I always like to go with the organic
it's going to be better for your plants
and ultimately better for you to then
you're going to add just some organic
fertilizer any type of fertilizer that's
made for vegetables is fine
you don't need to add a lot at this
stage because chances are your plans
have already come pre well fertilized
from the nursery
so just a little sprinkle will do
go ahead and work that into the soil and
at this stage because the potting soil
is so dry i like to give the pots
include so cold water just really fill
it up make sure that soil is nice and
damp
I think it's better to add the water at
this stage so that you're actually
planting your plants in damp soil and
not shocking them with too much water
was er actually in soil now you could
start with seeds
I'm a bit of an impatient gardener and i
like to use my plants right away so i go
for the transplant
what's nice about herbs is you can
actually start cooking with them right
away they enjoy being sniped and clip it
actually helps to stimulate the plant
and will help them grow even more then
when it comes to choosing herbs I kind
of put my herbs into camps the delicate
spring like herbs and then the hardy or
more Mediterranean herbs
I like to have all of them growing at
the same time because depending on what
I'm cooking
i may use one and one day shun the
others on the other so I like to take
one pot and dedicated to all those
spring like herbs the chives and the
parsley the dill and a little bit of
French tarragon
I love the springtime herbs because they
had a wonderful freshness anything you
mix them in i'll put them in spreads or
sauces
they also make for great garnishes as
well so to plant your herbs what you're
going to do is just basically dig a hole
the size of your pot you want to make
sure that all the roots are covered and
that the plant is nice and snug
I do group the herbs together because i
find that it makes for a pretty
presentation in your pot so I'll take
all of the deal and kind of space them
out giving them some room to grow
but you don't want to space them out too
much because actually having your herbs
nice and compact will help protect them
from the wind and all the elements
now if you want one of the things that
you can do is Mark your herbs so you
remember what you planted and i think a
great way to go is just by using some
little popsicle sticks they're
inexpensive they're wood so that it sort
of fits with a nice organic theme and
just use a permanent pen because when
you start to water those herbs
you don't want your marketing to
actually wash off then to keep all of
our moisture inside the next thing we're
going to do is just cover them with some
cedar bark
you could use any kind of mulch I like
the cedar bark because I think it also
looks pretty in the pot give it another
light soaking of water
that's it your first planter is done on
our next pot we're going to dedicate
these two all the hardy Mediterranean
herbs things like rosemary thyme and
oregano
they are wonderful mix for things like
marinade or grilled meat or even just
sprinkled over some roasted vegetables
so we're going to follow the same exact
system that we did with our other herbs
we're just going to put in the potting
soil little bit of fertilizer
we're going to plant our plants getting
them room to grow add your markers top
with a little cedar mulch and that's it
- planters are done at the other earth
and I love to have in my garden in the
spring and summer months is fresh mint
one of the things that I have learned
about meant is it is aggressive and will
take over
so I finally stopped fighting it and I
thought you know what i am going to
dedicate its own planter
so it can really have at it and take
over now these plants might look kind of
skimpy now in this big planter
but i tell you , midsummer this whole
thing will be overflowing with freshman
I'd love to use it in cocktails or fresh
lemonade or even as a garnish for some
desserts
now you may be looking at all these
herbs and wondering where's the fresh
basil
not to worry i did not forget the basil
but one of the things that I have
learned about basil is you can't plan it
in the spring
it's too soon what happens is that the
night to get too cold
the basil starts to shrivel up it will
turn all black and kind of yucky on you
and it will never arrive
the better thing to do is to wait for
early summer so one of the things I
figured out because I also grow tomatoes
is as soon as those Tomatoes start
growing and those first green tomatoes
appear
that's when you plant the basil because
right when those Tomatoes start to
mature and turned a bright ruby red
that's when your basil is at its peak
and there is nothing better than a
homegrown tomato sprinkled with some
fresh basil
so there you have it a simple way to
start your very own her garden
